This has also happened to me from Serbia-Montenegro. I got my card with several more for US hams in the envelope I mailed to Serbia-Montenegro. No money but I mailed them to the appropriate US hams. Happy DXing. Jack K4CUB

eHam Forums / Elmers / Wire Antenna for 40-20-15-10 Meters, small yard.

I also live on a small lot with no room for horizontal wire antennas so I use a quarter wave vertical wire antenna with antennas and radials cut for 20, 17 and 15 meters with very good results. Used with my FT-920 and FT-102 I get very good audio and signal reports from contacts all over the US, Europe, Canada and South America. A couple of weeks ago I worked the EU SSB Sprint contest and made contacts in over 35 countries in a very short time on the air. Not too bad for a cheap antenna.
I have the antennas attached to a Shakespear Sonny Day 20 foot telescoping fishing pole and the pole is mounted in a patio umbrella stand. The radials, 3 for each band, extend from the pole to the ground. I can easily put the antenna up or take it down in 6 to 8 minutes. If you will email me I will be happy to email you some pictures of my setup.
I don't think that a ground mounted vertical antenna is the best choice for a "city" antenna for a number of reasons but it is much better than no antenna and it can get you on the air with a minimum of fuss and expense. You may want to look at Stealth Amateur Radio by Kirk A. Kleinschmid, NT0Z which has some cleaver antennas for us city dwellers. This ARRL publication has a description for making a wire vertical antenna like a flag pole.
Keep in mind that where there is a will there is a way and focus on getting your license first. Good luck.

eHam Forums / Elmers / FT840 OR IC 718
|

I do not own the IC718 or the FT840 but have used an IC718 which belongs to a good friend of mine. It is in my opinion a great rig with a lot of bang for the buck. It has several features, I believe, which the FT840 does not have including a built in electronic keyer if you are interested in CW.
I am a fan of the Yaesu rigs and own a FT102 and FT920. Although I have never used a FT840 and have only seen one in operation, from what I have read I would choose the IC718.
I guess this is not much help to you. Good luck and 73. Jack

I use the hamsticks mounted at the trailor hitch on the rear bumber with the quick disconnect so I can get in the garage. It is ok but I believe it would be better to mount it on the front of the bed behind the cab. A buddy of mine mounted his there and I beleive it works better at that location. Good luck. K4CUB
