16  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 160 Meter Inverted-L Bazooka Antenna on: November 30, 2011, 04:48:44 AM
Well I think that I will for now stay with my Inverted Vee antenna.  I will keep on looking for some more and may try a Inverted L later.
Thanks to everyone who has responded so far.
Gud Luck to everyone in the 160 meter Contest this weekend.  I will be on the air at a friends house.  We are planning on working the contest together this year.

Does anyone have one of these antenna's?  Just wondering how they work.  I am thinking about making an Iverted L antenna for 160 meters, but came across this antenna and was wondering how they work?

Today's work on Beverage and antenna.  I have shortened the beverage down abt 250 ft.  It is now approx.  25-300 ft away from twr now.  I have also put my 160 inverted vee back on tower, but used a coax choke also on antenna.  From the test so far, everything is okay.  My relay on my receive antenna on the k3 is not tripping now.  So hopefully problem is solved.  I would like to thank everyone who responded and for the idea's.

My question is - Should I put a coax choke-like a ugly balun- on my inverted vee antenna.  I am having trouble with it interfering with my Beverage antenna.  What I mean is when I transmit above 50-100 watts of pwr it I hear my rx antenna board clicking in the back of my K3.  I figure the rig is protecting itself from receiver overload.  It only does this on 160 meters.  My Beverage antenna goes from the base of my tower to the northeast 1000 ft.  My 160 inverted vee goes from the SW to NE.  The center of my inverted vee is at 75 ft on twr.  I have tried moving the NE leg more to the north and also to the SW.  I can use 100w and no problem but get much over that, my rig starts to make a clicking noise which is coming out by the KIO3 board on the k3.  I am using an AL 811H amp.   I was trying find out what I might do to help this problem.  I am assuming that the Beverage is in the RF field of the antenna.  I am planning on checking the resistor at the end of the Beverage to make sure it is not blown this wknd.  I am feeding the inverted vee directly from the coax no balun at the moment.  Any suggestion wud be great!!  Trying to get ready for upcoming 160 meter contest in December.

Thanks
John

I have always had this problem when using N1MM.  I have used N3FJP's software in the past and this has not happened that I can remember.  No-I wasn't accidentally hitting the page down button on the keyboard.  This would happen when any of the F key's were hit.  And yes I could speed it back up with the page up key.  Like I said this was the first time it has ever slowed down.  The other times the keying would speed up.  I usually run abt 28-30 wpm on program.  It would jump to 34 then 40 wpm when it would speed up.  Now on the slow down side it goes from 28 to 26 to 24 wpm.  I am using the Winkeyer USB for my keying interface.  I did already have one ferrite core on the keying cable to the rig, and have since added a second.  I have also added a ground wire to my computer case from my grounding point for the station.  I know I should have added one at a time but went ahead and did both.  Its just odd that I used all day and early evening with no problems and then all of a sudden this started to happen.  Like I said usually late at night when moisture starts to form. I will keep on doing some test late at night to see if I can figure out what is going on.  Thanks for those who have replied so far.

I have had this problem before, and have not been able to fix the problem. Problem is as follows: during early morning SS Contest my logging program N1MM would start to slow the code speed down for some reason out of the blue.  It seems to only do it at night when air cools off and moisture starts to collect on stuff outside.  Actually my program use to speed up, but I figure the problem is related to RF getting back in on my equipment.  I tried putting a ferrite core on coax and also on program cable from radio to computer.  Still does the same thing.  I had been running the contest for abut 6-7 hrs no problem.  I did ohm across the grounds on coax's to ground all showed continuity.  I have not yet checked for any shorts on my jumpers but will do that tomorrow or after contest.   Any ideas would be great.

TIA

Thanks for the replies.   I was thinking of lashing it to the Gin Pole and trying to tilt it down.  I am hoping that Stan-K5GO will be available to help us out.  Stan and Lester K5LG are good friends.  This is the QTH that I will be working on this beam K5LG..  More suggestions will still be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine has a Force 12 C-36XR antenna.  He has asked me to help him work on the large beam.  There are  two Baluns for the two feed lines.  One of the wires coming off the of one of the baluns has broke or came loose.  The baluns are to far out to reach.   I have never worked on a beam this size before.  I did help put it on his tower several years ago though.  I was just trying to get some ideas on the best way to go about it.  Lower it to the ground will probably be a last resort.  I have already put up our clubs Gin Pole on his tower a few months ago when we were doing some other antenna work.  It is a heavy duty Gin Pole.  Does anyone know if this type of yagi is made so it will pivot or not?  Any suggestion would be great.  A crane is out too.

I also vote for N1MM.  I also have N3FJP's software and use the ACLOG daily.  N3FJP software is very easy to use and setup.  I just wish they would still update the packages.  If you email them with questions, they still answer you very quickly about there software.  I use N1MM for all of my contests.  Still have a lot to learn about N1MM, but the yahoo forums are great for N1MM questions.

Dan- I think I misinterpreted your response on the swr reading.  The reading I gave you was bypassing the amp, but when I engage the amp the swr 5.0.1.  So I think that I need to adjust the coil before i will see any power increase in the meters.  A friend on mine has a plastic .1 inch hex tool for me to use.  So when I get it from him, I will try tuning the coil then.  Not much on 10 mtrs right now anyway.  HI HI..  Thanks again for the information..

The swr on K3 readout is 1.6-1.  Does the coil need to be adjusted before the amp will show power out?  I thought that it should be showing something even if the swr adjustment in the coil might be off some.  Thanks again
