1  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / what is this signal? on: May 20, 2013, 10:04:12 AM
Hello,

There is a one second pulse with an audio frequency of approximately 1360 Hz.  It occurs approximately every 20 seconds on 50.020.I don't know of anything other than CW beacons that should be in this frequency range.  Does anybody know what this signal is?My Grid is EM 94.  The only direction I don't hear it in, is North, but my two element Moxon is not exactly a laser beam.maybe I've watched too many Jodie Foster, movies, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Rich,

I am about to get the Rotator back from Yaesu Service in California.
I will be sure to post a picture ASAP.

Thanks for all your comments and that website.

Sorry for the delay in responding as I have a few questions out there in other forums.

By pushing the envelope I am referring to the wind load of this stack is right at the limit of the
Rotator's specifications.(Yaesu G-450A).

Would adding more mast length  between the roof tripod (which is secured to braced rafters).
and the rotator (secured with guy ropes) transfer some of the torque when rotation is stopped, from the rotator to be dissipated in the mast as it twists until the antenna comes to a full stop?

I was thinking 16 GA steel masts?

                       73 and Thanks Peter KT4XP

It will be mast mounted on a roof Tripod, with the thrust bearing between the Rotator and the first antenna, and guyed at four points on the thrust bearing.

I know this is pushing the envelope, so maybe 3 feet separation would be less strain on the rotator.

Thanks for the replies

I hope  my rotator can handle it.

I have a two element Triband Yagi (TH2MK3) , It has a 6 foot Boom.

I want to stack a 4 element 6 meter Yagi with a 10 foot boom, about 5 - 7 feet above it.

Will the longer boom of the 6m Yagi cut into the Capture Area of the HF Yagi?

I cant separate the antennas any further.Would using a 3 El 6 meter Yagi, which has the same boom length(6') be a good option?I hate to loose the gain of the longer boom 6m Yagi, but I don't know what else I could do?

                                thanks in advance, Peter KT4XP
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Six Meter 4 EL arrow (VS) Six Meter 4 EL Blue Star Antennas on: July 09, 2012, 02:11:38 AM
Thanks for the help.

The boom length on these two antennas is about all I can go, same for the $$ budget.

My only other question is how close vertically can I stack this on top of my 2 el tri-bander?

8  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: YAESU ROTATOR MYSTERY on: July 03, 2012, 07:08:39 PM
I talked to a very helpful Technician at Yaesu today. He asked me to measure the position Pot in the Controller. At full stop CW it should measure 0 ohms (mine 343 ohms) and Full stop CCW it should be 500 ohms (mine 20 ohms) these resistances were measured between pins 2, 3 coming out of the Controll box.I jumpered from pin to pin from box to rotator and no change in performance,so my cable was good.So we think it's the position pot in the controller. So I called him back and asked him I asked him if I could order the position pot and he told me the unit is not user serviceable HUH? ???After all that I have to send it in anyway.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / Six Meter 4 EL arrow (VS) Six Meter 4 EL Blue Star Antennas on: July 02, 2012, 10:04:29 AM

Both of these antennas are close in their eHam review score.

Arrow-4.8/5            $140

Blue Star 4.2/5        $120

Arrow has a Phone number on their website and 90 day return policy.

The reviewers had issues with Blue stars "fit and finish" and a flimsy Gama match, But when assembled they liked the performance.

Any experiences with these Antennas, or these Companies would help me decide.

                       Thanks again, Peter KT4XP

Thanks Rory

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.It took me a little time to get everything
ready to do indoor testing. The Rotator seems to run at a constant speed ,its the control
box needle that fluctuates in speed.Looking inside the control unit while running the rotator
I can see the motor shaft speed fluctuate, after the needle passes 180 degrees on the dial face.
If the dial motor is at fault why would it run fine for the first 180 degrees.I kinda think it could be
a position pot,but the one in the rotator or the one in the control box?

thanks for the reply and the pictures , 73 Peter KT4XP
12  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / YAESU ROTATOR MYSTERY on: June 22, 2012, 09:35:26 AM
I have been using a Yaesu G-450A at 38 feet rotating a 2El tribander (10,15,20m) for years without any problems. After a few months of inactivity something strange is happening. The dial indicator needle does not move as smoothly as it use to.The rotator still rotates the full 360 deg. plus another 90 deg. of overlap, but now when the rotator travels 360 deg.(0 north back to 0 north), the needle on the controller box only moves from 0 north to 180 South.

I tried adjusting the needle adjustment pot on the controller, I gained another 90 degrees of needle movement but it is not linear.every 5 degrees movement on the controller is approx. 10 deg. on the rotator.I have checked the continuity of the rotator cable, and looked inside the controll box for any obvious signs of component damage without any success. The rotator has a slight bearing noise, but when I put a load on it with my hand it goes away (if that means anything).

I am considering putting it back into service because I can just relabel the controller dial to reflect the changes, but if this thing is going to completely fail in a month I might as well send it into Yaesu for repair.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.TNX and 73, Peter KT4XP

Thanks Eric

For the been there done that.I am looking forward to the improvement
I hear lots of weak CW on six with the moxon. This should make them workable.

thanks for the info. I had no idea.I will take your advise and rethink my plan.

<the interaction with 20' spacing is minimal. With 10' spacing the F/B drops by a few db.>

I think I will try just the beam as WIK suggested, thanks for the model.at 20'
below it would be so low it wouldn't hear anything anyway. If I need to I can put a loop
on its own mast. but high enough to be useful.

Thanks for the Moxon link, I never saw a horizontal Moxon stack. My Moxon is a wire with
fishing pole spreaders.A stack like that would have a large wind load.

I think a 4 El yagi is the way to go.thanks again.kt4xp
