eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: need a mic for ft-7800

Hello , Evidently you do not understand that a mobile rig does not need a D-104. D-104's while being excellent for HF rigs are not designed with the same impedance characteristics as are the Yeasu Mobile rigs, with handheld microphones. While it is a hobby, with experimentation as a goal, replacing your original microphone will be the least problematic of your concern. I tried several years ago to adapt a Motorola mobile handheld mic to a 25 watt mobile rig and it sounded so bad that I had to use the original mic again. Hope this answers your question. As far as 'bassiness", a qualified mobile technician can adjust your audios electronic section to make the mic sound less basey, or possibly by adding or subtracting components in the microphone itself, in other words most mobile mics are designed now for proximity voice response, and would be finely tunes so that a variety of octavial voices can reproduce with intelligibility.

eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / National Traffic System still Relevant?

The difference between the NTS radiogram and the ICS 213, is one message format is made for long haul communications which was started on HF and has worked its way into local level VHF NTS nets, and the ICS form is most often used for tactical nets, to relay info quickly.
D.H.S. Radio Interoperability Comment: The public service radio freqs. I am still listening to are still using 10- codes, where plain English was mandated years ago. So much for interoperability. At the NWS Re-Openingthis past year in Sterling VA, I had the pleasure to see Loudoun County, Va.'s new Inter-Operable Van, and the fire/rescue operator who, looking at the VHF ICOM HT on my belt, commented, "I can link that radio up to our system". Why would they want to? Maybe a simplex patch, but not through a repeater. Only use ham-fire interoperable patch when: when everything is leveled, and the smoke has cleared....there is no radiation.... but is their life?
NTS in a Nutshell.... I feel that NTS is still relevent, but much of the national traffic system today is sending net reports, and what we call DanGrams: renew your license, welcome to the hobby, check out CW, etc.... The skill that it takes to voice a NTS message should not be lost on the young though, it's in hearing, and writing, that one gains the skill to accurately get the message through, plus learning all of the Message encoding jargon and preamble instructions. Being a net manager and a NCS for a NTS net after 6 months, I have left a legacy of an improved net, able, and willing traffic handlers, and new net controls. Was it worth it?, you betcha ! Bob Rice, KG4RRN P.S. Some can do EMCOMM, but don't know the first thing about how to treat people....

Personally, I use a V82 and U82, not waterproof , but powerful radios that take amperage well on batteries. The VX-8r would be my next choice. The new Li-Ion batteries BP-211N are robust enough, the units come with a 600ma battery which will not last more than an hour with intermittant TX , but will recieve all day and you can adjust the power output on these. My real choice for storm-spotting activity would be a waterproof dual bander or Yaesu watrproof single bander somewhere along the lines of the VX-170 unit. Good luck !

As of last week, the Internet has effectively been the root cause of my being un-volunteered for Fairfax ARES. The Messages you exchange on a public forum with other hams-- can and do sometimes lead to political un-volunteering of otherwise capable members, as to whether or not the person who is posting is in fact able to "get along" well with others. I failed in that the fellow(retired) ARES member got me upset, and I said something I shouldn't have in anger, after another of our group pointed out that in my original post "I had in fact said nothing of the sort", this on a different group altogether. Lesson Learned: let any derogatory comments about you, your operating practices, or knowledge, or in this case "not reading the post" caused me to loose volunteering in an organization of men, who are growing older by the day, and have nothing to do but to critisize and backbite fellow ARES members". The EC put it this way,"Please remove your title from your signature line-an effective way of saying :your fired"... Well, again, pride got in the way of my letting the post by the other ham go, and I warn all that in fact it is becoming prosecutable in many groups that value your service otherwise. Goodbye to all of my fellow members, I did not control my anger, and that was my failing. I should have remembered the... "I am only human , thus I err", saying , but I still await the other ham to say that first...so far he hasn't. It is no skin off of my back however as other groups use and need my volunteer services, and I will always remember rule # 1...and number #2.... 73,

Yes Ed, The NIMS Certifications you are referring to were enacted back in 2005, by DHS, and have been completed by most Fairfax County ARES members. For instance, I have 100,200,300,400,700,800,007,and 324 under my belt. We had to have a minimum of 100, 700, and 800 and 200 just to be in Fairfax ARES, and to recieve any HS grant money which is now used for the P.S.T.O.C. (Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center) being built to replace the old EOC in Pine Ridge). We also have two cases of GO KITS. We also have several members who are dual, and triad members of CERT, MARS, and SHARES, so we have our bases covered. Being interoperable, we have now stuck our hand out to other ARES groups and regularly drill on air with Alexandria, Arlington RACES, and Loudoun ARES, and PW ARES.If you have any questions please email Jeff, our E.C./R.O. at Ai4io@arrl.net. 73, Bob, Safety Officer, FFX CNTY ARES KG4RRN

The ARRL ARES E-LETTER has a great article on text messaging that I wanted to spread the news about the EMCOMM world out there...deploy your troops without waiting for an email reply, just text msg them. This is becoming more 'modern' now in notifying your 2-3 Asst emerg coordinators /hospital teams/ disaster search party, or net liasons, or whole organization of a needed activation. Depending upon carrier, there is a telephone dialing number unique to each carrier, and your activation message can be sent via SMS to any cellphone. Develop and practice sending codes, numbers, or plain language to your team members(up to 150 characters) and see how many of your members get your message and call you back (if you include a number) . On Sprint this can be done automatically by clicking the appropriate button. It all occurs in a matter of seconds, and you don't have to worry about the message not being recieved, due to spam blockers or firewalls. Of course there may be a charge for this service to the cell phone account and you might want to check with your carrier first and see if you are charged for this, to prevent abuse, you can have it tailored to unique email accounts only. 73 all~ BOB, KG4RRN SAFETY OFFICER, FFX CO. ARES, VA.

Needed to re-read that from the horses mouth.. It said "resource"....not organization, board,or anything else....I take back my snid remark. It is really something after all we have been through, that NTS is marginalized as a way of sending ER reports out of a stricken area and now we have to rely on packet and WINLINK 2000. I have already proven this area (District 2) needs liasons form different bands, different nets, and YES, different organizations in order for us all to be effective, and non-redundant...

What prevents you from using your Isotron outside when you operate, then putting it away after you are done? Are you going to let these HOA's tell you you can't go outside and transmit and enjoy your hobby, at least temporarily-then you are no real ham sir, if someone comes over and complains, tell them to shove it ! Your hobby is your ability to "reach out" with antennas, dont let the NIMBY's tell you you cant even have an outside antenna when you are outside operating... Just my 2 cents-

Hi ALL, I have been in EmerComm since I was licensed and find it both rewarding and painful. There are lots of egos' involved, so my advice is to read all the websites you can, join one group, and if you don't have everything you need, then get it. If you don't know about requirements, the requirements for some groups have changed, which may or may not include a police background check, a completion of one to four Incident Command System (FEMA) courses, and a miniumum of 24 hours of battery power for your HF-VHF-UHF station. Any other questions-- email me at mycall@yahoo . com. I specialize in ARES comms. 73 all,

Hi Ed, I feel I need to address you in this forum, because the other ones you belong too are too narrow-minded and I know the response would not be pretty, so here I am doing some communicating. I am really getting fed-up with ever increasing "training standards" for ARES. I once was a "ECRS" with VA RACES, but since I could not pass the test for RACES the following year (I missed by 5 points), I also failed a dispatcher job test for Loudoun Co. VA. (by 3 points)... I hope you see where I am going here. Every few years, especially since 9-11,there have been different schemes to manage volunteers. I just wanted to say, I think the one post was correct: Past EmComm Experience should be weighed as well as "passing the test". What is right yesterday, is wrong tomorrow, and most older hams I know feel that they don't need to pass all of these ICS tests to work for their EM facility. When I volunteered for "Patriot Challenge 5.02, walked into the AEOC with another ARES member, and the cute little woman behind the check-in desk asked : "Are you a Player"? to which I literally had the look of shock on me, because I had never heard the term used in ICS before. The briefing had no amatuer radio points or EMCOMM mentioned and I felt shortchanged we had to attend an hour long meeting , and then go back to the EOC, a 8 mile drive... After we got our radios working and computers up and running a Asst.Shift Supervisor comes bursting into the ARES operating room to scream "Who let you guys in here?"-and this was during the exercise ! I got a bad taste in my mouth from just these last two examples, both here in Fairfax County. Sorry Ed, I think I will stay home and play with my radios, I would rather be here, than at an EOC with a bunch of raging lunies screaming: who are you, and why are you here??? at me, I have my orange "ANSI ARES Vest one, my name tag and ARRL ARES hat on, and they are asking such stupid questions, its like walking up to a security guard and saying "prove you are a security guard".Why bother??? and probably the best reason, if something really happens where we have to evacuate, I have "breathing room",and I am not stuck in a secure facility room with a bunch of raging/unstable emergency workers with egos. As far as re-posting David Jordans' views about ARES and deployement of mapping software to improve locating shelters etc. in Arlington,I did not know you had his permission to do so... the one reader/responder ham was correct in saying "its' all politics" YES, it certainly is....when EM are looking for more "funding".... gee I could really see that one. I know you have posted lots of information on things hams working in EMCOMM are really interested in and this is probably where I use your articles as source material, such as battery care, and other items of interest. The politics need to stay out of your missives, it does no good, but turn off those long term "volunteers" who have to jump through more "hoops" than ever.... Bob Rice, KG4RRN P.s. If you attack me personally after this, on this or any other internet forum, I will have your pension.

I own a Kenwood TM-271 and a radio Shack scanner with the "DIG WX STBY". The requirement on this alerting system is the Warbling tone you hear is simply an alert to "tune" into your local channel, because there are more than one... It is very helpful when outside, camping, or during SkyWarn Activations. We are lucky in our area to have one repeater to have a "weather Eagle" programmed to interrupt the regular users when severe alerts/watches/warnings are issued in our Region. So, you must manually select the weather frequency after hearing the alert come through your scanner or Vx-7 etc...This is the way it is... 73

I was wondering... Is it neccesary to put a duplexer on a single 440 and 2 meter rig to a dual band antenna(ground plane)or can I get away with a coax switch?
