1  eHam Forums / Lost Hams / RE: Louis Maxwell ex K5CEV, ex KP4AQR on: May 07, 2013, 05:50:08 AM
It looks like he lived in Ohio before settling in W. VA. Here are some copies from the callbooks:
(just highlight the link-copy and paste into your browser-don't try to use as a direct link)

http://www.riverwalk-hoa.com/WB8ABH_Call Area 8 - Winter 1977-78.pdf

Lowell;  swipe the urls that I have entered (highlight and "copy) then enter into your browser.
I'm sorry that I didn't notice that the full correct links did not get posted correctly.

I found the following info:

no listing in Summer 1958 callbook

listed in Spring 1959 callbook as WV2CMG (novice class I believe)
download that page here:  http://www.riverwalk-hoa.com/WV2CMG_Call Area 2 - Spring 1959.pdf

listed in Fall 1961 as WA2CMG
download page here:  http://www.riverwalk-hoa.com/WA2CMG_Call Area 2 - Fall 1961.pdf

listed in Winter 1972-73 callbook as WA2CMG (Technician license- last listing that I have for WA2CMG)

listed in Winter 1973-74  - changed callsign to WA1RMY in Maine (last name is now Kassay)

listed in 1982-83 callbook as WA1RMY in Maine
download page here:  http://www.riverwalk-hoa.com/WA1RMY_Call Area 1 - Winter 1982-83.pdf

no listing in 1986-87 callbook, call area 1 & 2 for keywords "Yut", "Seul" & "Kassay"

Good luck.

This might help you out:
W8AXZ listed in Fall 1952 callbook
W8AXZ not listed in Fall 1953 callbook
W8AXZ not listed in Fall 1954 callbook
W8AXZ not listed in Fall 1955 callbook
W8AXZ not listed in Fall 1957 callbook
W8AXZ not listed in Summer 1958 callbook
W8AXZ and K8TIG not listed in Spring 1959 callbook
K8TIG listed in Fall 1961 callbook

I did a search on "univ" for the above "not listed" callbooks and did not find any call assigned specifically to Univ of Mich.

Thanks for the update, Tom. You work quick. I think you were lucky to run into someone with such a facinating history in Ham Radio. Having the R-390a in common will make for a great conversation. Good going !

I am curious to see what you find out.
7  eHam Forums / Lost Hams / RE: Local car plate on: February 09, 2013, 06:26:40 AM
That is an interesting one. I have only found KL7AIK listed in the early 1950s',

Kurt Rosner, Shemya Air Force Base, Alaska

I assume that this is an Oregon plate(?). Is it a modern plate or do you remember if the color is from another time ? I hope that you can catch up to this person and find out the mystery.
8  eHam Forums / Lost Hams / RE: Capt Walter F Stebens Jr USAF on: February 07, 2013, 08:18:16 AM
I can tell you that he was not a long time ham in the U.S. I have searched a sample of all decades of U.S. callbooks and never once found any "Stebens" listed. So, it is still possible that he was licensed briefly and I missed that particular year(s).
9  eHam Forums / Lost Hams / RE: Late Uncle's callsign on: January 25, 2013, 01:42:40 AM
Unfortunately, I only find a Wilbert Schwark, W9IHG  from Fond du Lac, WI. while searching the 9th call area from 1930s through the 1970s (scanned and searchable) callbooks.

John P. Yanak - You have the call correct. Last appeared in the Summer 1969 Callbook.
Looks like he is still living in PA. after doing a google search.

Only one other, briefly in the mid 1950s':

James R. Goeschi
5340 Walnut Lane
Woodland Hills, CA.
12  eHam Forums / Lost Hams / RE: W8KLD, Canton OH late 1950s on: November 21, 2012, 02:13:11 AM
He is listed in the Callbooks of the mid 1950s:

Harold R. Claypoole
1003 Brad Ave
Canton, OH

and

RFD 5
Hillsboro, OH

If you google "Harold R. Claypoole" you will find more info and KB8PVK, possibly his son (?).

WA6KRA was "very briefly" issued to :

Winfield H. Edwards
169 Gemini Ave
Lompoc, Ca. 93436

in the very early 1970's. This is probably not your guy. In the later part of the 1970's, the call was issued to:

Richard O. Hofmann
1178 Carrie Lee Way
San Jose, Ca. 95118

He held the call until it expired in 2008. He would be 81 yrs old.

I have checked the:
Summer 1965 Foreign Callbook
Winter 1972-73 Foreign Callbook
Winter 1977-78 Foreign Callbook
Winter 1980-81 Foreign Callbook

under the "DU" prefix and find no Roman Gregorio. Could this have been from later than the 1980-81 Callbook ?
