1  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Swan TV-2(C) chassis layout on: May 15, 2013, 07:50:40 PM
OK, this might be a 'reach' but you never know.
I recently acquired a nice Swan TV-2C transverter go with my pair of Swan 250Cs. I know, I know, BUT, I just love the old boatanchors. Never will play with my new radios, but I don't care that the newer digital modes are all that...I still LOVE my Drake TR-6......
I have the manual for the TV-2C but, there is no picture of the the chassis pointing to the alignment points, etc.
Yes, I am capable of 'reverse' figgerin' this out, but is sure would be easier to see a layout like every other mfg ever produced...

thank you!!!!

Hi Gedas. Go to "qth.com" and join the Heathkit reflector. If you search the archives, you will probably find your answer. Or, you can just ask the nice folks there. There is always a lot of discussions about the 3XX receivers.....

K7CB, be VERY careful. I had almost the exact same situation concerning a home I build a couple of years ago.
Facts:
- the realtor took us to this area that already had a ham with a huge tribander and tower
- told us there was NO HOA or any restrictions (correct)
- I applied for and received permission from the County Building Dept for my 2 towers.
- Building Dept stated in writing, ham towers were EXEMPT from ANY restrictions
- neighbors got together, pooled their money and sued us
- they were wealthy and knew they could NOT win but just wanted us out
- case was dismissed by the Judge in our favor

We had to spend thousands to hire a lawyer to defend ourselves.
Get this... One assh-le neighbor was 'against' us even though I bought his TV tower and put it up at my house!!! WTF???

However, between the death threats, and being driven off the road, my ex couldn't take it. She couldn't even go outside to work on her plants without someone driving by and swearing.
Now, I just LOVE a fight, but she was 'normal' and moved. Had to sell the house, my DREAM shop, DREAM shack, etc.

The bottom line is:
ANYONE can sue ANYONE for ANYTHING. Yeah, you might win, but at what cost?Huh

To VE5EDB, I also wonder why the Chinese haven't stepped deeper into the amateur/commercial market. Kenwood seems to make ham equipment almost as a side line to the commercial radios they make. We use some K'wood commercial hand helds from time to time out on my buddy's farm. Very nice radios.
However, I'll be willing to wager, some of the boards, etc in the high $ radios of the "big 3" come from China. I know the speakers and power supplies do.
When I used to travel to Tokyo on a regular basis, I was quite surprised that the cost of a radio from Icom, etc was NOT a whole lot cheaper than the same radio from a USA distributor. What was REALLY surprising was the much cheaper cost of accessories like xtal filters over there. Although I did buy some radios on different trips, I should have loaded my suitcase with accessories.
A chat with a nice Japanese chap concerning some nice Seiko watches, indicated that although the parts were made in Japan, these parts were sent to China for assembly, then shipped back to Japan for sale.
Being a target rifle shooter, I purchase a lot of mid to high end riflescopes. Most of the USA companies (Weaver, Burris, Leupold, Millett) now get their scopes from China. Some of the high end models, get the glass from Japan then send the parts to China or the Phillipines for assembly. The Japanese glass is second in quality only to the best European glass. Some of the best 'scopes in my collection are old (1970s vintage) Japanese models. When I bought them, I was frankly kinda embarrassed, 'cause all my shooting buddies made fun of the "Made in Japan" moniker... The Japanese have come a long way, but China is doing so at an accelerated rate.
The thing all boils down to this:
The Chinese are VERY capable of making VERY high quality items, IF you are willing to pay. If not, the Wal-Mart buyers drive down the price (and hence, the quality) of the Chinese goods, and as a result, it's good old "you get what you pay for"....

Hi, if you are offended by the behavior on that repeater, PLEASE don't even THINK about listening to 14.313. That "person" in Canada talks filth about Laura Smith and the FCC daily. Industry Canada has attempted to intervene, but it appears they are a toothless tiger.
My late Uncle (and Elmer) W1BNO would be totally disgusted....

Ray, I feel your pain, been there, done that, lost the T-shirt....
Here's MY story...
I have always had towers on my property, even an apartment in Mass. The ex-xyl and I moved to Florida from Ky where I had towers on 2 different homes.
We bought a nice parcel in a NON HOA area. The Realtor went out of his way to show me the other ham tower in the neighborhood, in addition to several TV towers.
I went to the County Building Dept submitted my Rohn plans and had written permission. I put up 2 towers which were VERY far from the one neighbor's property line.
I had cashed in my 401K, etc to build my dream garage/shack (2 story) which was beautiful and matched our new high $ home.
The neighbors got together and sued us because they 'didn't like the looks'. They knew all too well that they would lose the lawsuit (they did), but it cost us a small fortune to hire a lawyer, etc. These are a bunch of old, rich bastard who bitch about anything possible. My ex even asked me to take the towers down to 'keep peace', which I refused, so she left. Why? Because it got to the point we were getting death threats, been driven off the road, etc. Being a combat vet, I was ready to defend us, which the sheriff was OK with! She was afraid to go outside and work in her flower garden.
Counter-sue you ask? Lawyer advised against it since it could go on for years. The ARRL's VE Lawyers gave me great advise but in the end the advise was worth every penny it cost. Nothing.

The bottom line is this:

ANYBODY can sue ANYONE for ANYTHING. You might win, but you will lose in the long run. I know.
DO not try to place all your plans with any FCC regulation. It won't matter.

I now line in a nice home on 2 acres with 3 towers and NO neighbors!!!

Used to live a couple of miles from his "antenna farm/shop"... Total crook. Didn't realize the extent I was rtipped off, as I was unable to test items during a move from Ky to Fl. All items totally NFG.
I just wish (!!) I was back up there. It might even be worth a trip there, but I would end up in jail (where this scum bag needs to be)!!!!

9  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Gonset 2 Meter Sidewinder on: July 04, 2012, 05:25:03 PM
Maybe I should have asked this here before I asked in the 'VHF' Forum....
I just acquired a very nice 2M Sidewinder and just wanted to correspond with others that own one.
Yes, I have a lot of more modern equipment, but I've wanted one of these for years and years.
The cosmetic restoration is done and I'm just waiting on a new tube and a couple of caps to finish it. All I can say is that working on one of these requires some small hands, which I do NOT have. But I was sucessful reworking the dial drive....

tnx

Hi. Anyone out there have one of these radios?? I have been wanting one of these for a loooong time, ever since I saw one being used at a VHF club meeting. I have much more sophisticated radios now, but the construction of these old radios is too cool. The rcv works and the transmitter is going to have to wait on a 6360 tube and some split caps in the p/s.

I was just wondering if any owners would care to correspond directly concerning this model. I completed the mechanical/cosmetic restoration today. My hands are too big to work on this radio, but I did anyway. ha ha

tnx

Not a 'secret' any longer. The TS-990S is on the back cover of the June QST. If it performs as nice as it looks, Kwood will have a winner.....

13  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Silver mica cap's on: November 13, 2011, 03:34:15 PM
Great discussion. However, In testing thousands of coupling and bypass caps, one thing I have learned:
check the cap for leakage at it's rated voltage (non-electrolytic types) and if it leaks. it is NOT doing it's job. SM caps are usually rated at a rather high voltage.
I have found only 2 ceramic disks that failed (shorted) and the types like Black Beauties, leak like the proverbial sieve.
I have found a handful of 'postage stamp micas' bad, including one in my 75A-4.

These are the kind of failures a 'cap tester' or 'LCR Bridge' will NOT find. The cap MUST be tested at it's rated voltage.

Hi Wes. Too late, I already tried contacting the seller you listed. He has already sold the filter.
I was hoping that someone here would be willing to sell me a copy. No joy yet.
Maybe I'll just look at the signal with a 'scope or just put in sockets so I can swap ICs.....

tnx anyway!

15  eHam Forums / CW / Need info on a CW/SSB filter on: November 07, 2011, 04:39:30 PM
Hi. I just picked up a cherry audio filter. Of course, it came without documentation. It is a ERC Model SL-56.
I am looking to PURCHASE a copy of the Manual/Schematics. It works fb on CW, but when switched to SSB, it makes a crackling 'white noise' and the signal disappears. Inside looks mint but the ICs are hardwired... (but I can change that! ha ha)

Thank you in advance for any leads..... Google is NOT my friend when it comes to this unit. Sad
