16  eHam Forums / Elmers / 2 mtr/CB Antennas on: February 25, 2002, 10:18:43 PM
Can a magnetic mount 2 meter antenna be used in place of a CB antenna for just listening? How about transmitting? How could I rig my CB for a two day trip temporarily?
17  eHam Forums / Elmers / Prospective Ham Needs Help on: August 13, 2001, 12:39:58 AM
Evan,  may I make a simple suggestion?  I found a great price two years ago for a simple 2 meter HT that has scan and all the memory I needed as a new Tech Plus... who struggled to get 13 wpm...
Well, now the price of a NEW  ADI AT-201 HT has fallen to $119.95 as I read the internet vendors.
May I humbly suggest that you consider that 5 watt unit a first investment to start with, and then, as you shop around, find the base rig of your dreams? Unless that ICOM was within reach and you're already "in a commited relationship" with your first significant other...er, rig, I mean....

I find the ADI "Wall Wart" power supply to be adequate for my HT to function as my home base, with an external antenna rigged into my attac to assist in reaching more than one repeater in my area. (I'm in hilly SE Ohio... your mileage may vary!)

Sorry to admit that the above unit is NOT a multi band transmitter, but as a start, it was/is very adequate!
18  eHam Forums / Misc / "Frequency": You gotta check this movie on: August 11, 2001, 10:29:56 PM
Yes, I've rented the VHS version, with some idea of what was to happen.  This is a time-travel story along the lines of "What would happen if you could meet your father or grandfather and warn him/tell him of the things that were to come in his future..." Would you? Should you?  What about unintended side effects?
YES the movie asks us to suspend our disbelief, but paints HAM radio in a VERY favorable light. It is a touching, thoughtful story with a tremendous sense of urgency, mystery and "what will happen next?"  "How will they solve this problem?"  An edge of the seat thriller.  You'll like it.

Better yet, rent it for your next "club picnic" and watch it together as a group!!! You'll all enjoy it, discover it at the same time, and be talking about it all night!  Good PR for Hams and not too preachy!
19  eHam Forums / Stolen Gear / RETURNED Stolen Gear! True Story! on: August 11, 2001, 10:04:18 PM
It happened to me...while waiting outside a Sears store in a busy mall, I sat on a bench reading a newspaper...awaiting my wheels to be balanced and rotated. I took my ADI at-201 with me so it couldn't be stollen from in the car, and put it in my pocket...until I sat, when it was in the way...so I pulled it out and laid it next to me.  45 minutes later, car not yet done, I stood up and looked for a phone to call into work...tell them I'm running late.
10 minutes later I'm walking thru Sears, windowshopping the new FRS units when I feel for the HT in my pants pocket and remember it on the bench.... It's gone.  Mall security says a woman walked up to them and asked if someone had lost a walkie-talkie. They said no and let her go. No ID.
Local Hams reported 90 minutes later hearing a man key up the unit "Hello, Hello... " on the local repeater. No ID, No call.  A local pawn shop reported someone called to ask the value of an HT, but shop wasn't interested. No ID.
A police report was filed, with a detailed list of what was programmed on which channels, etc. No leads.
I placed a freebee Lost and Found ad in the local Tradin' Times Bulletin Board swap rag.... and got a call four days later..."Hey is this your black walkie talkie left on the bench outside Sears?".... It was the delivery boy of the resturant/bar located  15 yards from the bench. The owner's wife had seen the unit, picked it up, put it under their cash register after keying the mike to see if anyone would answer or claim it. It had been there a week. They just happened to see the ad while looking for a lost dog and realized it was the radio they had found!

20  eHam Forums / Elmers / NiCad vs. NMH battery packs for ADI AT-201 on: August 11, 2001, 04:53:15 PM
I understand some feel the NiMH battery packs are superior to NiCads... and the price may come down so they are close... Then, Why would anyone settle for memory problems with NiCads instead of going with NiMH?
Thanks for any help.
21  eHam Forums / Elmers / replacement battery pack slide clip Alinco DJ-180 on: August 10, 2001, 10:48:41 PM
Hi. I'ts me again.  I've recently been given a old Alinco HT... the old NiCad pack is stuck on it, and to free it, I found the slide clip had broken,a nd fell off. So, Ive got the battery pack, which recharges nicely, free.... but no way to secure the slide on pack firmly in place.

Can anyone advise me where I can find a replacement battery pack locking clip for the DJ-180 model ALinco HT?  THanks for any help.  PS: I've got a recharging stand of it...the EDU 49, I belive, but don't know if it's tricle charge, or should be used constantly. Any help on this one?
22  eHam Forums / Elmers / NiCad vs. NMH battery packs for ADI AT-201 on: August 10, 2001, 10:44:12 PM
Help! After 2 years, my NiCad battery pack (RBL)600 mAhr, 12V, has begun to fail... won't hold a charge, and the HT runs down the pack fairly quickly.  I can't live with this anymore, but dearly love my ADI AT-201 HT.   Where do I find a replacement battery pack?  Are NiCad better than NickleMetal Hydrieds?  Which are better?  Are they commonly available?  Any good sales, or good dealers you could send me to?  I'd like to get it in house by August 20th, for my vacation week.
Also, can you refer me to a good reading source, or web page to educate me on the difference, benefits, characterists of these types of batteries?  Should I attempt to open the old pack and replace the cells? AND, is there a recharger stand for the ADI AT-201 HT and/or battery pack that I should or SHOULD NOT consider purchasing?  Does one come with a replacement pack?   THanks, Elmers, for any help and guidance you can provide to a relatively new-comer.
