eHam Forums / Elmers / Kenwood TS-430S

Greetings,
I have a borrowed Kenwood TS-430S with a connect straight key.
I have been cqing, and never received a reply. I am not sure that the radio is transmitting CW. I have had a few friends listen to (and around) my frequency, but no one ever heard anything. The previous owner never used CW.
Is there anyone out there that can tell me what I have to do transmit CW on a Kenwood TS-430S.
Thanks, Roland AB1DZ

eHam Forums / Digital / Newbie: What next?

|
Greetings,
I am new to digital.
I have a Yaesu FT-7800, WINPSK, and RASCAL GLX mark V.
I read that packet is popular on 2-Meters. So I guess I want to start with packet.
What do I do next? I have a feeling the WINPSK is not good for packet, but I havn't been able to verify this.
Any help doing digital with the above equipt. is appreciated.
Thanks,
Roland AB1DZ

eHam Forums / Station Building / Antenna Mast
|

|
|
Greetings,
I am about to install a pair of 3ft antenna tripods on my roof. I am planning on putting a j-pole on one tripod, and a 4-elem yagi on the other (yagi 2m, j-pole: dual band)about 9 feet apart. This is my first 'real' antenna, so I have a few questions.
I need to put a mast on these tripods. I noticed that the 1.5inch galv. steel pipes at Home Depot weigh a ton. Is 5 feet of this type of pipe o.k. to use, or is it too heavy? What else should I use?
Thanks,
Roland

Greetings,
I am planning installing two vertical antennas on the roof of my home. I am considering a dual band (2m 70cm, and an HF multiband.)
I am planning on putting a pair of tripods on my roof. I will only be using one antenna at a time.
How far apart should I put the tripods to ensure that one antenna doesn't effect the other.
Regards, and thanks,
Roland

eHam Forums / Station Building / Ham Shack Design?
|
on: April 03, 2005, 05:46:30 PM
|
|
Greetings,
I am a newbie. I am trying to decide where to put my hamshack. I am planning on doing 2m, 70cm and HF. My choices are a detached garage or my basement.
At first, I was considering the detached garage because it is about 150 feet from the house, and I would guess less possibility of interferance.
Now I am considering the basement. I wouldn't be bothering anyone else in the house. Since the house has a large chimney (>10feet higher than garage) and an antenna there would be perfect. However, the coax feed into the house could enter the house with the phone, electric, and cable wires. Am I correct in guessing that this is very undesireable? Should I look for another way to route the ham coax into the house?
Any ideas, hints, comments?
Thanks,
Roland

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / SWR vs Gain
|
on: March 28, 2005, 03:58:23 PM
|
|
Greetings,
I am a new hammer, looking for my first base dual band (2m 70cm) antenna. I am hoping to put the antenna on the roof of my garage, and use 50 feet coax to connect.
I found a few reviews for omni antennas. Some boast 9.3/13 gain. I found a review for a j-pole. It boasts a good SWR.
The j-pole salesman told me that his is the way to go due to the low SWR. However, I would think that the overall gain would be a good measure of an antenna's performance, and that the SWR is already factored into gain.
I couldn't find any discussions about this on the web or any of my books.
Could someone please clear this up for me?
Gain vs SWR to determine best antenna? J-Pole has no gain?
Etc.
Many thanks,
Roland ( AB1DZ )

Greetings,
I have programmed my Yaesu 7800. I have some questions.
I have three different 145.190 programmed. Two into Memory Bank 1, and the third in MB 2.
None of them are DCS, and all have a different CTCSS code.
When I scan memory and 145.190 has activity, how can I know which one to transmit on?
Thanks,
RG AB1DZ

eHam Forums / Misc / Linked Repeaters?

Greetings!!
I am setting up memory for my Yaesu 7800. I have a copy of New England Repeaters.
I noticed that many repeaters have links. What exactly are links? Does this mean that these repeaters are linked together, so that If I make contact with one, I also have all the others? Would the CTCSS code have to be the same for all 'Linked' repeaters?
Thanks,
Roland

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Newbie needs help with first HF multiband antenna
|
on: August 30, 2004, 12:02:06 AM

|
Greetings,
I am looking into buying my first non handheld. My next step is to figure out what antenna to use. I am interested in HF Multiband. From what I can see ..
1) I will be stringing a wire (almost horizontal) between the top of my ham shack and a tree that is about 40 feet away, about 15 feet off of the ground.
2) The wire will have another wire coming off of it in what I think is called an inverted L antenna.
3) The wire will be not be over/under power, cable, phone lines. I don't want to be mentioned on the 7 o'clock news.
4) I will then connect this to a coax, and the coax to my transceiver (with a tuner). The coax will be less than 75 feet long.
5) I read that the orientation isn't important as HF has a lot of scatter.
Am I missing or misunderstanding something? Am I just plain wrong? I spent a lot of time going through books and the internet to come up with this. Every time I look at something new I seem to get more confused.
Is this O.K? Any ideas, suggestions, etc would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Roland ( AB1DZ )

eHam Forums / Station Building / Newbie trying to figure out what to buy. Spec rea

Greetings!!
I am a newbie shopping for my first transceiver. I am looking at the Kenwood TS-480SAT and the Yaesu FT-857D. They both are HF.
Someone told me Kenwood has a better receiver. How can I figure that out by reading the spec? How much better is it.
Thanks,
Roland
