Software maintenance fees are the bread and butter of the commercial software industry.
The problem with hardware producing companies, is that the hardware is an expensive doorstop without the software.
Thew problem with Flex as I see it is that not only they drank the MS coolaid, they also filled up the swimming pool and they are swimming in it.
They like to believe they are a software company but they are not.
Their "product" is not "software". Just like BMW is not a software company although they probabaly have written more code in the last year than all the SDR developers combined.
You buy a car from BMW, and a "radio" from Flex.
It's like the old joke of "How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb? None, it's a hardware problem".
It also seems they *Flex) stumbled on yet another management book and they are attempting to implement some ideas from it
