1  eHam Forums / Elmers / Wireless Network (802.11G) in the shack on: April 08, 2004, 04:54:14 PM
I have 802.11g in the shack and thoughout the house. I'm using a D-Link AirPlus Extreme G router and the matching cards, except for one laptop that uses a Broadcom interface (also 802.11g).

There have been no cases of interference between the radios (VHF/UHF and HF) and the two computers in the shack. The router is also in the shack, along with the cable modem. The laptop is used at various places in the house, and there is another machine nearly 80 feet from the router.

We do have a Panasonic 2.4GHz phone system - haven't noticed any trouble there either. My wife is frequently on the phone at her computer, with no interference.

Please heed the advice to make sure that your network is secure!

2  eHam Forums / Elmers / mfj-993 and qrp/ladder line fed antennas on: April 01, 2004, 05:10:13 PM
Well, I can almost help you ;^)

I've had an MFJ-993 for about 6 weeks now. It replaced an MFJ-969.

I have two HF antennas. The first is a 135 foot inverted V. The second is a 560 foot loop. While the 969 did fine for tuning the inverted V (80-10m), it really couldn't handle the loop for 160m, and had a couple of other bands that were marginal. Both antennas are fed with 450 ohm ladder line (180 feet for the Inverted V, 130 feet for the loop) which goes to a 4:1 current balun, then coax to the shack.

The 993 handles both antennas very well, on all bands. The worst SWR I've seen at any frequency is 1.8:1, which isn't bad at all. Otherwise, I get 1.5:1 or better. The 993 is very easy to use, tunes pretty quickly, has lots of memories. I'm pretty pleased with mine.

As for QRP, I normally run between 40 and 100 watts depending on what I need.

I hope this helps.

3  eHam Forums / Elmers / Rig to Computer hookup help?? on: December 14, 2003, 03:44:26 PM
If you have a sound card interface installed and working then you need to obtain one of the software packages that handles CW. Personally, I've not had great success with any of them. They'll send perfect code but the ability to receive code is marginal at best, even when a computer is doing the tranmission. However, two of the popular packages are MixW32 and CWget. You can find these on the web.

Check out Link700 - much better than the software provided by Kenwood and supports several Kenwood radios.

5  eHam Forums / Digital / PK 232 DSP problem? on: October 09, 2003, 07:26:07 PM
I've got the PK232 DSP, and just got around to tying the sound card mode. When switched into sound card mode with either modemswitcher or PKTerm 1.71 I get no audio out from the soundcard interface on the TNC and don't appear to be able to xmit data through the TNC. The TNC connects to the TS570S via the ACC2 port. The TNC works fine for RTTY, AMTOR, etc.

The TNC does appear to be switching between modes (you can hear a relay click, and the tuning bar goes to a single bar).

I can verify that I'm receiving PSK signals by bypassing the TNC (routing the external audio direct from the rig to the PC).

Any ideas on what to take a look at?

Thanks,
Bob N6YMA

7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RFI from electric fence (cross-posted to RFI) on: September 23, 2003, 12:47:10 PM
Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. I'm meeting with the fellow this evening and we'll re-ground the controller and then walk the fence. Fortunately, it is only enclosing 1/2 acre or so for his horses. I saw lots of loose, slack wire yesterday, so we'll fix that, too.

Thanks for the advice. His fence is actually several hundred feet from my antennas. I'll check all the connections.

I recently ran into a situation with RFI that was S9 from 80-15MHz. With a recently acquired MFJ Line Noise Analyzer I tracked the problem to a neighbor's electric fence charger. Turning off the charger immediately cured the problem! Now, he is being nice enough to leave the charger off this evening for my nets. Tomorrow, we'll put a clamp on his ground rod. Currently (no pun intended) he has the ground connection simply wrapped around the ground rod. We'll get the ground connection fixed.

Assuming that fixing the ground connection doesn't eliminate the RFI, what should the next steps be? I know that I should make sure that the electric wiring is not touching any posts, and is clear of the grass & weeds. What else should I check?

I found a 4BTVmanual (which has references to the 5BTV) at http://www.hamanuals.com/MMans/4btv.pdf

12  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / User manual for 5BTV antenna? on: June 25, 2003, 09:06:44 PM
It doesn't appear that New-Tronics posts any of their antenna user manuals on their site. Is there anywhere that has the user manual for the 5BTV, or anyone who can fax me a copy (or e-mail in doc or pdf format)? I've got one on order and want to do a little prep work before it arrives.

Thanks,

13  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Diamond X200A Capacitor Values on: May 05, 2003, 10:46:36 PM
Call the distributor (www.rfparts.com, not the place you bought the antenna from!) - the one time I had a problem with a Diamond Antenna they immediately replaced the section by overnight delivery. No arguments, no hassle.

I think they have exactly what you're looking for.

You might want to check this out:

I've seen other similar descriptions of this repair. You should be able to find them by searching with google. Also, take a look at the equipment reviews here on e-ham - you might find something there.
