2  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: HF bands general question on: May 10, 2013, 05:07:15 AM
Do you have access to a transceiver/receiver that covers the HF frequencies?

You could answer your own question simply by listening. Note the call signs in each QSO
and than look up the QTH of the participants.

I see your in Georgia. If you don't have access to a HF receiver, go to the "WebSDR de W4AX"
site located in Atlanta, Ga: www.W4AX.com and listen.

You'll see daytime / nighttime propagation characteristics in action. Enjoy!
3  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Finding my Novice Examiner? on: May 05, 2013, 06:33:54 PM
Mark...

Do you have a name? If you have his Callsign, it might have changed over time.

The FCC Database search for Callsign is only good for last two years. So if you have a name,
try a search for it. Otherwise, you're out of luck.

FCC SEARCH LINK: http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchAmateur.jsp;JSESSIONID_ULSSEARCH=yQK2RHGS0GXJbBy3Yy91GrJG1vFw44H5nkL9YkXRKJpQ0QWnhrWn!-374438180!510035284

31 years is a long time, and this individual might be a SK now.

My novice examiner from 1960 is alive and living in California still holding his same K2 district callsign. Have his old QSL Card along with my Novice Code test saved with every license the FCC has ever issued me. At age 14, it was a very remembered event I'll never forget.

Good luck!

6  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Vertical antenna comparisons on: April 09, 2013, 04:13:35 PM
If you want a like comparison of similar Vertical Antennas, there's a booklet published in 2000 that conducted these tests.

HF Vertical Performance; Test Methods & Results - Price $20.00
LINK: http://www.championradio.com/HF-VERTICAL-PERFORMANCE-TEST-METHODS-RESULTS.3

SUMMARY:
NØAX and K7LXC are at it again - this time it's HF multiband verticals. Now you can read an unbiased report on how they really performed. Antennas tested include the Cushcraft R8, Butternut HF6V, MFJ 1798, Force 12 ZR-3 and V-3, Diamond CP-6, Hustler 6BTV and Gap Titan. It's 64 pages of protocol, data sets and summaries.  Presented at the 2000 Dayton Hamvention.

Read a review by recognized antenna expert and published author LB Cebik, W4RNL.

See W4RNL's Book Review at:
LINK: http://www.antennex.com/shack/Mar03/sntest.html

I have this book and the hams attempted to conduct these tests as per each manufactures specs. They did NOT make ground mounted (radial / no radial) verticals vs roof mounted with Elevated radial comparisons. After going through the results, while it gave me some food for thought, yet I'm still researching, reading, and learning.

Also, there's always Antennas by N6LF, Rudy Severns recent articles / research on verticals.
LINK: http://www.antennasbyn6lf.com/

Check out N6LF articles on …
= QEX article on elevated radial ground systems
= Series of QEX articles on ground system experiments

Answers for Vertical antennas are hardly ever simple black and white, but many shades of gray depending on your QTH, antenna placement location (ground vs Roof), and soil conditions to name a few factors.

Hope this gives you some answers, and / or a direction for a starting point. Good Luck.

12  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Buried Vertical Radials on: March 25, 2013, 02:30:12 PM
For a ground mounted vertical, the radials are normally placed on the ground, rather than below it. Than let the grass grow over the radial wires.

Take a read of the various postings by N6LF Rudy Severns concerning Verticals at:
LINK: http://www.antennasbyn6lf.com/

The QEX series of article are especially interesting at:
LINK: http://www.antennasbyn6lf.com/2009/12/series-of-qex-articles-on-ground-system-experiments.html

In particular, Part 6 deals with ground vs elevated radials
Good luck!

14  eHam Forums / CW / RE: How much would you pay for a J-38 key? on: February 26, 2013, 03:00:33 PM
I realize that my $5.00 J-38 some 53+ years later would cost a bit more today, but bids before / after this item closed for $29.00 to $56.00.

Was the original box in that great of shape which upped the price to over $300?
15  eHam Forums / CW / How much would you pay for a J-38 key? on: February 26, 2013, 01:47:56 PM
