1  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Raiilroad power line arcing, how to get it resolved? on: December 13, 2012, 09:03:16 PM
You might try calling Amtrak's Customer Service number to start.  If that doesn't work out, then call whatever the number is for the PUC.  If that doesn't work out, call Laura Smith at the FCC.  She is the General Counsel and is ham friendly.  I'll leave it to you to find her number.

Amtrak Customer Service according to google
1-877-444-4773    Direct to human.

That reminds me.  There is www.gethuman.com that usually helps you find the way to get directly to a human being for most companies.

I have access to a signal generator, sweep generator and spectrum analyser usable to 1.5GHz.

Assuming this means the analyzer isn't yours, then talk to the owner.  Chances are he already has experience in this sort of measurement, and has a tracking generator to go with his analyzer.

The fact that the company is paying your salary while you are doing this is not necessarily the same thing as the company paying you to use a ham radio.  The FCC is not going to jail you or fine you if you are providing a public service during an emergency, regardless of the circumstances.  OTOH, as AD6KA points out, unless the circumstances are truly unique and there are no local trained EmComm operators, then it's unlikely you will be able to help.

So long as the station is well and thoroughly grounded, low- and high-pass filters installed as needed and the station is operated and set up using solid engineering problems there should be no issue.

Unless your neighborhood has ATT U-Verse installed.  I've been on quiet time for various reasons for the past few years.  But before that, I spent a lot of time with ATT helping them figure out the difference between an AC ground, a DC ground, and an RF ground.  I plan to become active again this year, so we'll see how many phones and TV sets I take down.

Oh, if you mean legal problems: no, I don't expect any.

If you're an attorney, you may be able to deal with what's going to happen, otherwise, you're in for a rough sail.

Why would he need an attorney?  RFI is not local jurisdiction.  Sure, he may need an attorney to establish that for some judge, but it's hard to believe that this isn't well established by now except maybe way out in the boondocks.  Back in 1981 my neighbor called the police to complain and the officer told him point blank that there was nothing he could do, but if the neighbor trespassed and threatened me again he would be in trouble.

If closed fee-based repeaters are legal (and they are) then this is legal.  What's the big deal?  Part 97's pecuniary interest rule is about the communications, not about the radio.  No, I am not a lawyer.

One of the guys who gave me my extra confided that he didn't even bother studying the math related questions.  He accepted that he wouldn't get them right and just made sure that he got everything else right.  Seemed like a rational way to go about it, but I had spent several months with the AA9PW applet, and I don't think I missed more than 3 or 4 on all three of the tests, total.  (I took them all at a single sitting.)

The biggest problem with connecting a radio directly to a computer sound card is common mode hum.  It either affects you or it doesn't.  It's best to use the line-in jack if you have one, since it is 600 ohms instead of the higher impedance (and thus more sensitivity) of the mice port.  But you can usually adjust the record volume slider to get it to work.
10  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: seeking a low cost spectrum analyzer on: April 20, 2012, 07:09:34 AM
Check into an HP 853A and either the 8558B or the 8559B SA plugins.  They're still fairly inexpensive, don't have the concerns of a flood gun in the CRT (HP141T), and there is an active support group on yahoo.  If you need a Tracking Generator, the HP 8444A with Option 059 works with these.

I read somewhere that there is essentially just one CC&R contract that every developer uses.  So, no, there is no choice when you buy a new home.
12  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: so... what fails in old radios on: March 11, 2012, 10:28:36 PM
Hi voltage diodes in transmitter/amp power supplies are another common point of failure.
13  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: 75S-1 Looking for year of manufacture - SN 2370 on: March 01, 2012, 09:04:35 AM
Hi Peter,

Look at the date code on the side of the  electrolytic.  There is usually a manufacturing date on the bottom of the crystals, as well.  For example, my 75S-1 has a date code of 6034 on the electrolytic, which is the 34th week of 1960.  This matches well with the date code on one of the crystals I pulled, which was 10-60.  This gives a pretty close match as to the actual manufacturing date of the radio - which would obviously have been a bit later.  Later models have an MCN number which can be translated into a date, as well.

14  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: Ebay ? is it going down the tubes??? on: August 09, 2011, 05:32:55 PM
I haven't sold anything on ebay in years, so I can't speak to that.  I did buy a pretty nice 75S-1 and crystal pack recently, as well as some misc small stuff.  So, as a buyer I'm pretty satisfied.  OTOH, I do have a couple of KWM-2s that I will eventually want to sell, and I'm not sure whether I'll use ebay or one of the ham swap sites.  I'm a bit intimidated by the rumors of people pulling out parts and sending it back or just flat out lying about having received it.  The swap sites are just as vulnerable, though, I suspect.  I guess it's a matter of knowing your buyer, which is a hard thing to do.
15  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Do we have a "caste-like" system on the ham bands? on: July 30, 2011, 02:27:24 PM
I wonder how many respondents have taken the time to voluntarily be retested for their existing class?
