The receiver in the HW-8 is a Direct Conversion design, it is very open to out of band interference especially from a STRONG signal like a SW Broadcast station. About the only thing you can do is perhaps run an antenna tuner between the rig and the antenna to give you a little better rejection of out of band signals. Sounds like front end overload, a common problem on direct conversion receivers.

eHam Forums / Elmers / "Pulse" Noise on 60 and 40 Meters....
|

Is there some sort of new "Woodpecker" starting up on the 60 and 40 meter bands ? In the early morning hours here in New Mexico, I hear a heavy amount of QRM being generated with Pulse noise on these bands. Sounds like some sort of Over-the-Horizion Radar or something of that nature.. Any ideas what this may be

Here is what you should do>>>>> IF you are a CONTESTER... DO NOT renew under any circumstances....
IF you are NOT a CONTESTER, you should renew a DAY AFTER the big Mayan Event.
That way, you have covered all your bases !!!!

I agree with K7KBN............. THE WOODPECKER would have spikes that clearly dominated mostly the 20-meter band with 60db +++ signal strength. It also was a very distinctive Pop-Pop-Pop at about 10-pps and would have sort of a sweeping sound as the directional pattern was skewed around. This was back in the 60's and early 70's.
Some companies actually made a "Woodpecker Filter" but I don't know how effective it may have been. I was just a Poor Kid back then and could not afford one to check out.
Let's hope that ORIGINAL WOODPECKER never returns !!!!!

The rig must be capable of SSB operation to operate with a TNC. The TNC produces Audio tones for the data transmision and the CW only rigs have no way to send that type data out over the air.....

It was interesting to me this past weekend when I was listenig to the LIDS on 14.313 doing everything WRONG in the book and then some. Many probably Not licensed and many who were not giving any calsigns if they were licensed. On comparing thier activity to what I heard on the famous "BOOTLEG" channel of 27.555, I have to say the curtesy and order was much improved on the Bootleg channel. Eveyone there was a gentleman and it sure sounded like some sense of respect for each other..... Have the roles finally changed to where Hams are now CB'ers and visa versa? ? The Wallwart for my Genrac 5kw generator is nothing more than a simple 12vdc @ 200ma device... Nothing more.. you can probably get one at Radioshack or whatever.
It simply floats the gellcell battery at full charge and that's it.......

"FCC APPROVED" for What??? If it is used for AMATEUR use, it should not require any such approvals. If it were to be used on CB or other "COMMERCIAL" services, it would have to be "Type ACCEPTED" but not for use on HAM FREQUENCIES by HAM OPERATORS!

For me, when the day of "EMP" comes, I think my priorities will be focused Far from any Radio foolishness.... I will be more interested in survival and eventually personal protection from the masses of Have-nots......
Weapons will be the thing of value. I hope during that time to trade my radio gear for GUNS before it all becomes totally worthless!!!
Sounds like the MAD-MaX doons day predictions...................

"The hardest part of any amateur radio exam these days is trying to decide where to go for breakfast before or lunch after the exams! "
HAHAHA !! How entirely CORRECT you are !!!
Actually, for me it was remembering WHICH DAY the exam was being given so that I didn't sleep in that day !!!

if I were in your situation, I would abandon the TV Tower and put up something like a Rohn 25 with proper base and guywires. At 40ft, your already streaching the limits wth that TV tower and adding any antennas simply intensifies the danger of a disaster.

Seems to be a little on the Sour Grapes side of things.... Maybe he FLUNKED the Extra Exam and is now venting his fury.....
Although I do agree with his comments, we must not forget the all mighty ARRL for our Incentive licensing requirements...
Back in the 60's they really pushed for it and I well remember being a General Class with ALL band priviliges then one day, all of a sudden, I had band restrictions.
I was NOT happy that I Lost what I had however, I took the exams and got it all back.
The biggest "Caste-Like" issue lately has been the "NO-Code EXTRA" also known as the "CB-PLUS" I suppose no-one will ever be happy with whatever system of licensing comes around.....The "EXAMS" are a Joke anyway, just open your book, read the answers, and go pass the stupid test.... It only takes a couple of hours to be ready for the EXTRA these days.
