1  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: COVENANTS AND HOW TO SAVE HAM RADIO... on: March 26, 2011, 01:45:13 PM
But it dom't do advertising! How does anyone get the interest to become a Ham if they are always hidden away, like dirty laundry?

What is wrong with Hams if their existance can't be known?

Be an ambassador!

You can always advertise on your vehicle if not with antennas you can use nothing more than a sticker in the window or a licence plate. Be vocal everywhere you go talk to those that want to know what your doing. Not too much different than bragging about your grandchildren if you have any. If you wear a ball cap most of the time where those that can help interest those around you.

Do what you can to be radio-active at home, but concentrate your advertising and be an ambassador away from home.  This is what I do, I have no CC&Rs other than my XYL when it comes to putting up antennas at home. I never leave home without my HT.

With the ways I just suggested you will be influencing more people to try amateur radio that an antenna farm in your yard will ever do.

Is it possible to turn one of the live trees into the tower? If the only thing above the canopy is the top of the vertical, how they going to know? Just a thought.
3  eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Dissappointed with the hobby and clubs so far on: February 15, 2011, 11:47:57 AM
I'm sure I'll catch some kind of flack from this, but I only speak from the experience I've had thus far.First off I don't need comments on a misspelling or improper punctuation, now that's out of the way.I'm sure there are some very nice hams out there and this doesn't apply to all,but I have had a very poor intro to the hobby here in Missouri, basically my ham radio equipment has become glorified police scanners with me checking into a net once in a while to make sure I can still transmit.Seems if you don't know someone or aren't Joe Schmo's son people on the air locally are downright unfriendly and it seems anytime I've ever gotten a decent conversation started with what sounded like new blood like myself other locals get on and muscle there way onto the repeater with there "tea chat" I understand that we all have rights to talk its just the manner and the timing, and another one of my favorites is how unknowledgable some of the so called "elmers" will be with newbies and tell you 'oh I don't know about those radios" or "I don't know about that issue" and then a miracle happens.........the next day or week you hear this same person you asked a question to become a expert on the device or situation to his or her pals.Isn't this about friendly communication? I mean nobody has to be my friend but a little common courtesy would be appreciated.

This sounds so familiar. Years ago my wife who shows horses, didn't want to show on the state breed level complained to me that she didn't know anyone and that everyone is unfriendly or down right snobbish. I suggested she join anyway, she did and then she started to get to know people She found out that they were friendly and not snobbish. What made a difference was she got to know them.

I am the only ham in my family I am not talking just my children, wife and grandchildren, but all of my brothers and sisters and their children and grandchildren, I have 16 brothers and sisters, I am the only ham.

I joined the local club, and didn't know anyone, but I met them and have gotten to know them and found that they are the best bunch of guys and gals. I am a nobody, I have absolutely no connections that anyone might use, but I do have the hobby of amateur radio that connects us all.

John,
Were it I, I would go the the HOA and point out the section of the Florida code you posted about requiring 14 days notice prior to assessing a fine. That being said, you should be aware that reading just one paragraph out of the code often leads to the wrong result. Florida wouldn't be the first state to have another paragraph somewhere else in the code that says that paragraph doesn't apply to (fill in the blank here); it might be for HOAs in your particular county, only for HOAs formed after some date, only for HOAs that don't include something in the CC&Rs saying that provision of the code is waived, etc.
In any case, good luck!
Robert

Even still, sometimes the hidden paragraph can sometimes work in your favor. I remember once when I got a ticket for parking my daily driver in my front yard.
It had been a new ordinance to stop junk cars in yards.
This law was tacked onto an existing law to stop strangers from parking on your property without permission that said flat out that the owner of the property had to initiate the complaint.
Since I owned the land and didn't file a complaint the fine was removed.

In any event reading the whole HOA rule against antennas and the states rules plus part 97 and you may be able to find a way out of the mess.

6  eHam Forums / Station Building / What would you do to build a Ham-friendly house? on: August 20, 2007, 09:10:32 AM
"A column of earth won't work. Earth is actually a lousy conductor. If you measure the resistance between an 8' ground rod driven into your soil at one location and another 8' ground rod driven into your soil at another location, it will be "a lot" of resistance. Almost any conductor or semi-conductor is better."

In my case that wouldn't hold true. I live in an area with soil that is mostly sand. about 4 foot below the surface is the water table so an 8 foot rod would be well into the water table. Even with a high water table, I have no problems with drainage.
7  eHam Forums / Station Building / Ham Shack Design? on: August 20, 2007, 07:38:36 AM
In my case we have just added on, because my F-I-L has moved in with us, we converted the garage into a kind of apartment for him. Then we built a new garage and breezeway, the breezeway has a room 13 by 9 foot this is insulated, heated and close to the rest of the house. This room is my new shack. My shack before was a small area in the basement near the washer, dryer and water pump, all great sources of noise. It was also very cramped and shared with other household items no one knew where to place them so they ended up in my area. This won't happen in the new shack, I hold the key.
8  eHam Forums / Stolen Gear / ICOM 745 S/N 03503 Stolen Through EBay Bum Deal on: February 22, 2006, 10:06:37 AM
I'll Take postal money orders. Then I take it to the P.O. If they don't clear then I don't send the item. If the money order is stolen then it won't clear. Pure and simple.
