eHam Forums / QRP / RE: WHEN IS QRP NOT QRP?

For ARRL contests, the rule for QRP is 5w on CW or 5W PEP on SSB. In some other contests, 10W PEP on SSB is considered QRP. Think you'll find that for portable operating a dedicated QRP rig will provide dramatically longer battery life than a "dialed down" 100W radio (QRP rigs tend to use much less current when receiving than 100W radios).

I have owned used a Bencher BY-1 since the early 80's. I like mine; it's a good key if you have a light touch.

eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: FIELD DAY & BANDPASS FILTERS
|

I built a set of bandpass filters for our club's FD; from the Sept 1988 QST. The article is available on the ARRL's web page under: http://www.arrl.org/rf-and-af-filtersThey work well, although there are some newer designs that are better. I got the parts from 'Dan's Small Parts and Kits', and they were inexpensive to make. It can also help a lot to turn on your transceivers' attenuators and dial down the RF gain. Using single band antennas helps, too; and provides some intrinsic "filtering".

I was licensed in 1976, and my observations match those of AA5TB; there is actually more activity in contests than there used to be, but far less casual activity. I can tell you that in 1976-77, I could call CQ on 3725 KHz at 3 pm in the afternoon on weekends during the winter, and have casual QSOs with other stations around my state and in neighboring states. Now 80m CW seems dead on weekends after sunrise.

eHam Forums / CW / RE: What is 72?

It's the QRP version of 73. Do more with less.
OK, thanks. I wondered what it was. At what power level is 72 preferable or acceptable compared to 73? This is common? It's a QRP thing; apparently begun by RV3GM. So 5 watts or less.

I had WN8IJI, and then WA8IJI. They issued W8JI in parallel. They told me I could keep one or the udder. Since I didn't really like udders, I kept one.
I wish though that they would bgo back to making a person in 4 district be a 4. If there was a good two-letter four call, I would take it. But they are all taken by people in 8 land.
My call ends with a single dit, I see yours ends with two dits. Lots of times the DX only gets the "N3Q" part of my call and I have to work to get the "N3QE" across. If I had my chance to do it over again, I'd choose a call that was longer but with more dahs. Many times in marginal conditions, the first letter the DX will get is the "Q". So I now see why "xxOM" is such a desired call. It's longer than a call with just a dit or two, but dahs are much easier to copy in the noise. There's a contest call in Spain I hear during some tests. "EE5E". I see so many busted versions of this (e.g. "I5E", "E5SE" etc.) Dahs are good! I've worked his Swedish cousin, SE5E.

It's usually the most popular of the events sponsored by QRP ARCI.
The Adventure Radio Societies' "Flight of the Bumblebees" (also a QRP event) at times has attracted a comparable (and in some years, greater) number of participants.

With the growth of the vanity call sign system, people on the air no longer assume someone on the air is an OT just because of their callsign, unless they hold an older 2x3 WA# or WB# type call.
My call was first issued in the early 30's, but I'm 51. 73 Scott W5ESE

I just checked my LoTW "hit rate" in the 2011 ARRL 160M Contest, and it was about 56%. So about 50% seems right on for mostly domestic CW contests.

I know our club station licensee submits our club's FD logs to LoTW, and he's commented that the number of hits is usually pretty small (though not zero). Digital mode contacts tend to have the highest LoTW "hit rate", followed by CW and SSB. Is it possible you have the date or time wrong in your Cabrillo file? Did you use the UTC date/time?
