1  eHam Forums / Elmers / Cable TVI on: August 20, 2009, 01:05:51 PM
I had the same problem at my house.  I just bought a filter a radio shack, though this a few years ago.  They sold them for a few dollars, they went inline at the rear of the tv.  Blocked anything below 30MHz if I remember correctly.  This fixed things up quickly and easily

2  eHam Forums / Elmers / Where to buy weatherproof enclosure for preamp? on: August 20, 2009, 12:39:41 PM
A suggestion once you find the box, to keep moisture inside the box under control, what we have started to do with our geocaches, (see geocaching.com if you want to know more about that) we save the little packets of silica gel from the new shoes and other products that we buy and put them inside the box.  This seems to be able to absorb most of the moisture that occurs inside the well sealed box.

Well we made out quite well.  Oddly enough though 40M was our worst band.  Historically for us we did well on 40 this year 20 and 80 were the money bands.  Only missed a couple of states, didn't get DE, NV or AK. I'm going from memory I think we got all the rest.  Worked most of the Canadian provinces as well which is a change.  I see a previous post that said they didn't work NE.  We were shocked at how many NE stations we worked.  From our location a 1D in MI we kept switching between having the beam pointed south and working all the w4's and then going west and getting the 6's and east coast of the back.
The real trouble came sunday for us.  On saturday we were having a bit of an issue with the winch on the crank up tower.  We cranked it back up and all seemed ok, put an extra winch on in case it gave way.  We went to crank it down on Sunday around noon to call it a day and the gear slipped and the tower lowered itself rather quickly. No one was hurt.  The damage appears to be limited to a rotor cable and the boom for the x7 beam actually snapped.  I'm sure it was carrying a lot of energy as it came down that quickly.  Come August, we are going to take the tower down and inspect everything before reinstalling it all correctly again (with a new winch)
All in all an excellent field day

In response to two smaller batt. being better than one large one.  I'm not sure the theory behind it, but RVers swear by using two 6V deep cycles in series over one 12v one.  I originally thought it would be for weight but it's not that, they say it lasts longer.

Can two vertical antennas share the same ground radials?  Would there be any negative effects?
6  eHam Forums / Elmers / TS-940 power supply HOT on: January 29, 2007, 05:06:16 PM
This is an excellent opportunity to keep your coffee warm during contests.  Just sit your mug on top of the power supply.
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / 14avq radials on: November 30, 2006, 02:57:55 PM
I have been discussing this issue with a ham friend for about a week now and our decision was exactly steve's recommendation.  We are going to put it up and experiment with it and continue to play with it until the results are satisfactory, realizing that it is not a beam.  The two of us have both owned verticals with varying results each time.  If I chose to ground mount and put out a few radials to start should they be tied into anything metal that is in the yard, such as chain link fence?  I remember reading about not using fence for radials.
8  eHam Forums / Elmers / 14avq radials on: November 29, 2006, 07:22:30 PM
Thank you phil.  Now I must make the decision to continue with an elevated mounting or ground mounting this antenna.  The manual for the antenna says no radials are needed on the ground but since I know the ground here is not of "high quality" lots of clay I will likely put in a few.  To add another question to this, do I really need to have radials for each band or can I just cut the radials to the lowest frequency to be used.  I got this question because of an article I read from a very old 73 magazine that was making reference to the distance between the ends of the radials as being more important and for that reason the more radials to be used, the longer they should be.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / 14avq radials on: November 29, 2006, 04:54:08 PM
I am going to be setting up a 14avq.  I have read the instructions (for a change).  It says that radials are not needed if ground mounted and that radials are needed above ground.  Though I think the antenna will benefit from radials no matter where the antenna is mounted I question where the radials must be.  Can i mount the antenna up on a mast and run the radials from the base of the mast or must they be attached directly to the antenna?  My thuoght is that electrically it wouldn't matter since the antenna is connected to the mast and the mast is connected to the radials but what is your opinion??
Thanks

11  eHam Forums / Elmers / CB to 10 Problem on: September 13, 2005, 02:39:51 PM
Even if it does go in khz steps this shouldn't be a problem since all the cb channels are on a frequency ending in 5 27.xx5  so ten kc steps should still get you to the repeater.  Channel 40 for example is 27.405
Best of luck

That was kind of my thought to put some significant amount of steel in behind it.  I wish I were driving a 1987 Cadillac, I'm driving a 91 Pontiac Lemans, that cost me two hundred dollars to purchase.

I have a diamond sg7900A, I can find a lot of trunk lip mounts for it, but no simple mount that I just punch a hole in the middle of my trunk.  Is there any reason why I can't just use a bulkhead connector secured in a hole in my trunk? (or roof).  I already own the antenna so I don't care to buy one with a NMO mount.
