Just heard this myself and was going to notify fellow Hams.  Thanks for making sure we knew.

2  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / OK, going with a mobile-advice between these 3? on: November 01, 2008, 02:12:20 PM
Don't need a dual band as I'm in the Sacramento area and we can't use 440 due to PAVEPAWS, also don't want the added expense.  I have a dual band mobile in the shack that I can use during a callout, this is just something a little better than an HT for local stuff.  Everything else is pretty much figured out.
3  eHam Forums / Elmers / headset recommendations for Yaesu VX-7R on: October 31, 2008, 09:39:45 AM
Just wondering if anybody had any recommendations for a good headset earphone/mic for the Yaesu VX-7R?  Yaesu offers the VC-24, which looks like a good quality set-up, but the cost is $70 or $80, depending on where you look (and I wonder if the $70 units are old stock or something?).  This is VOX or PTT.

They also have the VC-27 which is like the cell phone unit with an ear-bud and the mic hanging down below.  This is for VOX only.

I've seen a couple others listed, but don't know the quality and don't want junk.  I want it for EmComm situations and for mobile.
Thanks all,

Didn't really notice it until later.  Kind of looking for the least expensive model I can find, and that one was one of the higher priced models.

Thanks for the info on the 2800.  IF i'm able to afford the whole set-up I will probably go with the 2800 as I found one for a good price and it does seem to fit my needs the best.  I'm sure all are good radios, but for now, the 2800 will have to do.

That's what I was thinking at this point.  I found a 2800 for the same price as the 1800 model, and since this would be used for ARES applications I might get long winded.  Most used rigs I've found seem to only be a few bucks cheaper than the new ones, so I'd definitely rather go new than save $20 only to have to spend $80 to repair it cause it was actually busted.

I've decided to go ahead and put an inexpensive 2M mobile in my truck instead of trying to do a HT-mobile set-up, so was wondering if anyone had advice between these three or even a suggestion of one I'm not seeing.  I'm still looking for a used radio, but if new is about the same price for what I need, that's fine.  This is going in a Ford Ranger 4X4 primarily used for ARES and other mobile stuff with no heavy off-roading (I hope).

The three I'm looking at, in order of price are:
Yaesu FT-1802M @ 50W
Yaesu FT-2800M @ 65W
Kenwood TM-271A @ 60W and Mil Spec.

The biggest difference I can see is the wattage and the fact the Kenwood may be better able to handle heavy off road use, but I stay on fire roads.

Thanks for any info.

8  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HT mobile help on: October 22, 2008, 09:25:16 PM
Thanks for all the info and I think I will just go with an inexpensive 2M mobile and find a sneaky place to hide it, so I'll make another post asking about the three I found.
Thanks again for everyones advice.

9  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HT mobile help on: October 21, 2008, 12:51:02 PM
Hi all, hoping someone has done something similar and could give some advice.

I have a '90 Ford Ranger 4X4 with a camper shell which has a roof rack that was designed to carry a heavy boat, so should be strong enough to handle any mobile antenna.  Although I have a mobile radio, I do not have it permanently mounted as the vehicle has to be parked on the street and I am afraid of theft.  Hooking up the mobile takes several minutes and is more of a pain than it's worth for just a quick cruise around town, so most times when I'm out I just take my HT.

My HT is a Yaesu VX7RB (50/144/220/440).  I've seen those mounts that attach to your dash which will hold your HT's while driving.  I was thinking I'd like to have a set-up that I could just drop in the HT and attach an antenna and this way I could be mobile quickly and fairly inexpensively and wouldn't have to worry about theft too much.

I was wondering if anybody has a set-up similar to this and what they would recommend for the HT mount, an antenna for this (remember, there are four bands) and maybe a "Brick" for some more output power?  I've looked at a few of the amps and they seem to be for one band only, but I did see one for 144/440.  Would I have any problems with a 144  specific amp on the radio when trying to talk on other than 144?  I've never seen how these amps work with, or attach to, HT's so have no idea about it at all.

I also have a Kenwood TH-79A dual band HT (144/440) that I can use so I'm not restricted to the VX7RB, just thinking of that one because of the 4 bands, so if I'm better off with this and a brick please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any and all help on this.

10  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / ft-857 vs ic 706 MkIIG on: October 18, 2008, 09:37:26 PM
I figure it's like cars, everybodys had a lemon no matter what brand, or has heard about a lemon.  So I guess I'm looking for the consensus of opinion.  I'd love to have an IC-7000, but can't afford one and have heard bad things about them, but have also heard good.  I was told about the IC-706 back on the day I got my Tech lic, so I know it's been around a long time and is a good radio.  I've heard the FT-857 is just the mobile version of the FT-897, which most say is a great radio, so I guess I'll wait and see when I need to get the radio, then see how much the plastic can handle before it melts in the credit card slot (LOL).

Thanks for the info.  I wonder if you may have had a bad one as several folks have said the 857 was a good radio?  I have the 897 and it does seem to be noisy, but I have nothing to compare it to and on the few occasions where I've been at other HF rigs it didn't seem to be too bad in comparison.  I had planned on the 706 but didn't know about the fan problems until this post, so not sure what to do.  I read about the IC 7000 and it seems like they don't have all the bugs worked out of it yet, so I'll just keep asking questions and trying to figure something out.
Thanks again,

Thank you very much for taking the time to Elmer me on the filters.  This info was very helpful.  My background is more in recording engineering than E. Tech, which I have a limited background in (and I'm no recording engineer either, just a hobby).

Thanks to you good folks my education in Ham is growing daily.  I'm reading my ET and Ham books again, so this explanation really helps clear things up.

Regarding the filters in the IC-7000, what exactly do they do?  Are they just like an EQ where it reduces some of the freq to reduce noise?  I don't have any external filters on the FT-897, just the DSP and ATT and other internal devices that if I remember correctly are filters, but I have never really been able to get them to do much.  Not that I can afford $1500+ for a rarly used mobile HF, but it is nice to know just in case the mobile becomes more than rarely used, or becomes the new base that can be mobiled!
Thanks,

While I realize there are probably differences between the radios (FT-897, 857, and IC706MkIIG), I don't believe there is enough to bother me for the limited use I have for them, so the basic statement of they are basically the same works for me and is valid.  Like I said, I don't want to start a war.  There's enough Hams out there who seem to want to argue and that makes us our own worst enemy.

Thanks for the point of view, but I was just asking for a basic difference, not if I want to work something special where one would definitely have more whistles and bells.

Thanks for all the info.  I like the IC706 and 7000, but for my use I just can't justify spending more money for the Icom's.  I have a Yaesu VX7RB too, so I am kind of used to the Yaesu's, so I have no problem with them, and with the Yaesu being the lowest priced of the three mentioned, I think I'll stick with that for now.

It's just nice to know that there isn't a huge difference between the two.
