121  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Our four laptops at FD werent talking....Help! on: June 25, 2012, 06:36:33 PM
Well two of them were.  Both had W7.  Mine and the fourth one had XP.

We all used N3FJP FD software 2.6.

Are W7 and XP doomed to be mutually exclusive when it comes to networking?  OR, is there a simple solution that could be employed?

Thanks in advance.
122  eHam Forums / Special Event Stations / RE: W5A Amelia Earhart Operation Jun 24 - Jul 7 2012 on: June 19, 2012, 08:28:09 PM
I was just in Hawaii. In Hilo, along the bay is Banyan Drive, with it's awesome  Banyan Trees, planted by  notables like Babe Ruth, Richard Nixon, King George V, and...Amelia Earhart.  Each has a brass label with the date and name of the donor.

So in another way, she lives on.

125  eHam Forums / Clubs / Field Day - W8FD (COOKEN ARC) - at Four Church Farm, Licking County, OH on: June 18, 2012, 12:51:59 PM
Looks like 4 stations this year, off  commercial mains, operating   ssb, cw, digital.  Bands will be 80-6m.  100w.  This years new secret weapon is a club hexbeam to go up at around 35 ft.  for 20-15-10-6M.

See you this weekend.

where  and when can I find the  raw scores posting for the June VHF Test?  I checked ARRL and found nearly 1000 logs had been submitted but nothing about raw scores.

127  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: ARRL VHF Contest: WW8OH (EM89)Licking County OH - makes its 2nd appearance on: June 17, 2012, 08:49:36 PM
Tnx Jeff!  The openings were   BIG and  not from the usual  states (FL and TX) We worked lots of 0's and 1's plus pretty much  all over the country

But we were hampered again by  power line noise than ran 59+10 due north of our QTH, to S5 or more in other directions.  So apologies to those who called and didnt get a reply from us.

Our QSO total was 180, up from 125 last year with essentially the same set up:  100w to a 4 el yagi at 38 ft.  That's nearly a 50%  improvement.

See ya'll next year.
128  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: June VHF Contest - Yeehaw that was fun! on: June 17, 2012, 08:44:14 PM
Our club, WW8OH, Licking County, Ohio  made 180 qsos in the VHF Contest, running 100w to a 4 el yagi at 36 ft. We again had S9+20 power line noise to the north which dropped to S5 at best in other directions, so apologies to those who called and wondered why we didnt come back.

Nice strong signals, especially from 0 Land and 1 Land, but very few 4's for some strange reason.  Usually  FL and TX are constants for us, but not this year.

We picked up Mexico, the entire West Coast,  but nothing from the Carrib.

See you next year
129  eHam Forums / Contesting / ARRL VHF Contest: WW8OH (EM89)Licking County OH - makes its 2nd appearance on: June 04, 2012, 06:06:43 AM
COOKEN ARC - WW8OH - will make its second appearance in the ARRL VHF Contest this coming weekend.  QTH:   "The Barn"  EM89TX .

The QTH IS a barn ( now refurbished into a hunting cabin and shack) and is located  about 2/3rds up  a 700 ft hill in rural SE Licking County, with clear shots to the E, N, W, and a moderate  upslope to the South.  Our station will run 100w SSB to  a 4 el 6M yagi and an 8 el 2M yagi, mounted on a 30 ft  tower, and fed through 50 ft of RG213.

5 ops will man the station which will be active over  both days of the contest.  Antenna/tower set up will be Friday, just in case.... (I dont think a pic can be inserted here or I would have included a couple of nice eones from last years event.)

Ops will include: Jack (K8EM), Brad(AC8GX), Kevin(AC8GI), with  Bob  (W3HKK/KH6) operating from Mauna Loa, on 2m, with an IC2AT handheld. (....you never know!)

Look for us beween 50.125 and 50.175 depending on conditions.
130  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: how do I install a 24 ft mast without a hole in the ground? on: May 29, 2012, 09:22:33 AM
Like the umbrella base idea, and the pin.  Drill a half inch hole and drive a standard 4 ft rebar into it. Then when all is said and done,  and you take down the antenna/mast,  you can caulk up the hole with cementiious material and never see it.
131  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Any nice Es openings on 6M yet? ( Been away) on: May 29, 2012, 09:17:31 AM
May 28th at 0130z heard two huge signals from ND, here in central Ohio......the guys were working   major pile ups, and did so for hours.  Not many other loud sigs on.  They were  peaking 59+10/20.  Beautiful.

Must be fun when the skip is in to YOU!
132  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Any nice Es openings on 6M yet? ( Been away) on: May 22, 2012, 03:55:03 AM
Im seeing lots of lines on DXSherlock, but only hearing a few of them in central Ohio.  Worked one FN19 yesterday and heard little else, but the spots were hot  heavy and over my head! Funny how that goes.

5 el yagi at 15 ft here.  I hear height makes a diff!

134  eHam Forums / Special Event Stations / RE: ARBOR DAY Special Event Station-Licking Co., OH.-Sat. April 28, 2012 -10am-4pm on: April 29, 2012, 04:48:51 AM
Thank you to the 131 stations in 21 states and provinces who took the time to work W8TNX.  The LOTW logs  should be  entered within the next couple of weeks.  The downloadable self-print  commemorative certificates should be  available through QRZ.com @ W8TNX within the same period.  Just enter your QSO number ( 1 thru 131)  and go to it.

Those wishing a paper QSL please include an SASE.  But remember, certificates are self printed by you.

FWIW, it was a brutal day.  temps were in the 42-45F range.  Sleet and rain fell for 2-3 hours of the total 6 hours on the air.
Being under an open air canopy required using multiple plastic table cloths over the rig and operators to stay dry. The rig  ran 100w to a 4BTV vertical with 32 radials ( give or take.)

Our hardy operators however stayed at the mic through it all.  We even have photos of them  in action.  We also had a very special guest operator at the mic ( a stuffed beaver borrowed from a nearby group under a similar canopy.) Fifty canopies/groups of nature lovers covering gardening, local utilities, energy conservation, taxidermy, bee-keeping, land conservation,  tree climbing using ropes hung from a 100 ft tall oak ( very cool!), wood-carving, etc etc made for an interesting  day for all who braved the nippy weather.

Hopefully next year, M. Nature will see fit to bless us with some compensatory sunshine and warmth!

The folks at Dawes Arboretum couldnt have been nicer or more helpful.  They provided us with the canopy,  table and chairs, free coffee and donuts,  and mobile support for hauling heavy objects from parking to the canopy site.  If you have an arboretum near you, I think you would find your local folks very supportive to having a radio club operate during their Arbor Day festivities.  Nice, nice people!

See you next year!  Be there or be square! ...............The COOKEN GUYS.
