eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Monitoring PSK31 signal output

The PSKMETER is a godo product. However, the problem is that the software may not work with Windows 7. For clean PSK signal, do the following:
1) Put the radio in CW and adjust for a signal output of 50 Watts 2) Change to SSB and tune your PSK signal so that the ALC indication is zero.
This should give you an output of about 25-30 Watts, more than enough for PSK31 and within the IMD limits. I use a Kenwood SM-220 station monitor and it is useful in monitoring the output.
Good luck!

Gene,
Thanks for the prompt reply! I suspect that MMTTY is light years ahead of the other software when it comes to FSK with USB. When it comes to RTTY, TruTTY is stuck in the serial port era. It is good software for the other modes and works very well. So, it seems that unless they use Makoto's engine, the FSK part of TruTTY will have to be done AFSK.
Again, thanks!

Hi to all!
I recently got TruTTY in order to update my digital software on a new computer running Windows 7. I got the software working fine. However, I have RTTY running on AFSK because I have not found a setup that will work on FSK. MMTTY from Makoto Mori is working well using the FSK.dll, which is what I have used for years in Windows XP. In the case of TruTTY in FSK mode, i can get the radio to key and generate either a mark and space tone, but not the diddle, even though there is a TxD block in the setup. My guess is that there is one setup where the DTR/RTS pins (1 and 2) blocks must be checked for it to work.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Thanks for the info. I didn't find out about the SDR-IQ until after I had bought the sound card. I'm going to have a hard time convincing the wife to let me spend $525 for that vice $230 for the LP-Pan. She's already agreed to the new radio, so I don't want to push my luck.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission!!!! - author unknown, and I say that tongue in cheek!!! However, seriously, the SDR is the better approach. Good luck on your quest!!! 73 DE Bert, KA2UUP

eHam Forums / Digital / RE: What power for PSK31

A good away to adjust for PSK31 is to put your transmitter on CW mode and adjust for 50 Watts on your power meter, then switching to SSB and adjust your PSK31 output so as not to cause your ALC to kick in. In my IC-746 this equates to about 20 Watts output with no distortion when observed on my SM-220.
Good luck!

Klas,
I had the same problem with an AL-811H some years ago. After a lot of problems with runaway gris current, I sent the amp to Ameritron. They found out that the resistor in the meter was intermittent. This might be the problem.

MMSSTV and tune 14.230 MHz. If you use EasyPAL (very good for noiseless pictures), install and then go to 14.233 MHz. Be sure you have a fast processor on you computer for the latter.

BRAVO! A DX contact that consisted of the distance from your HT to the IRPL equipped repeater plus the distance from the Russian IRLP repeater to the Russian station's radio. Now do the same thing on HF with 25W into a compromise antenna system and you have something to crow about.

He was on the air yesterday afternoon broadcasting what sounded like a tape recording of a telephone conversation with some woman who appeared to be with the FCC (maybe the new amateur enforcement Sheriff?), but could not hear well in the New England area. Then all of a sudden I heard Walter Cronkite announcing that he was on K1MAN.
Thank God, his show has not spread to other freqs.!!!!

Old news, just old news!!!!! I say again, if I am going to be so narrow minded as to not give my vote to a candidate because he does not think that ham radio operators are needed, then we are royally scroooooooooood! We better think long and hard who we want to see inaugurated on 20 January 2013 at 1205 PM. At the present time, anything looks better than what we have in DC, Congress included!

Yes, better reliability because the 572B will be loafing and also smoother operation of the amp. Don't expect more power because that is a function of the power supply.
My AL-811H works very well. I did the change 10 years ago.

Yep!!! Now I see it, my man!!!!
That is why I seldom give opinions in here and only try to restrict things by asking questions about technical matters. I was not treated very nicely some years ago when another radio amateur asked about putting 572B tubes in his AL-811H amp and what were the benefits of doing so. The answer I gave him was "yes, you can", very simple and, apart from better reliability and smoother operation, no other benefit was to be had. Others were questioning as to why he was spending the money (like it was theirs), giving the wrong technical information ("you don't have the voltages in an AL-811H to load the tube"), etc. Some people attacked me for defending the guy's right to spend his money as he wanted!
Well, what can you expect? Thanks for sticking up for COMMON SENSE!!!

Only moonbats (that's what we call ultra liberals in Massachusetts) think that COMMON SENSE can be applied and stupidity can be eliminated by laws that are difficult to enforce. We are in big trouble if we continue on that trend.

AI8P,
My point is that you never hear on the news that the vehicle in an accident had a CB, or ham radio, or handy talkie. The police report can say that, and the press will speculate on the causes of the accident. The problem is that this is never reported because the MINORITY of the accidents, or none for that matter, are caused because of radio use. Most of the time the press will speculate that the driver "might have been talking on the radio at the time of the accident" or the "the vehicle was equippped with a two way radio and it is beleived that the drive was distracted." However, this is never the case, at least I have never seen a report like that in the local press in Massachusetts where we have plenty of accidents.
Most of the time the accidents are caused by people using cell phones, texting, women farding (it is a word, meaning applying cosmetics), reading the paper, falling asleep, plain stupidity or doing other things that they should not be doing while driving a car. As a previous poster said, you might as well ban GPS units, which I think are more distracting and also make people do crazy things when the thing says "recalculating" or "whe legal to do so make a U-turn." Next thing you know, we might as well ban walking by taking on a cell phone because we may get distracted while crossing the street and be killed by a car (it happened the other day in Boston BTW).
I say again, you cannot legislate COMMON SENSE and you cannot ban STUPIDITY by legislation. We are the ones who can only apply common sense and not be stupid.
Have a nice day!!!!
