61  eHam Forums / Elmers / One Microphone, Two Radios on: July 06, 2009, 11:56:24 AM
The MFJ-1260, 1261 and 1262 series of products will do what you need.  The 1260 is two mikes to one rig, the 1261 is one mike to two rigs and the 1262 is two mikes to two rigs.  I have the 1262 with Astron and a SM-20 mikes.  Works very well.

Good luck!

62  eHam Forums / Elmers / to pro (746pro) or not to pro (746 non-pro) on: May 28, 2009, 10:36:47 AM
After reading the reviews on the IC-746 PRO, I decided to keep my IC-746 NON PRO indefinitely.  It had been operarion now for 9 years without one service call or horror story of lockups or lights not working.  Best of all, it is still calibrated to spec.

While the filttering may be better on the PRO, for me the reliability specification is the most important.

Good luck and 73 DE Bert @ KA2UUP
63  eHam Forums / Elmers / elmers, what is the front end of a radio? on: April 24, 2009, 07:14:38 AM
In simple terms:  The front end is the one with the knobs.  The back end is the one where you hook things up!!!!!

Aside from that, the explanations above are very good!!!!

65  eHam Forums / Elmers / Ameritron AL-82 With HIGH AC Line voltage on: March 30, 2009, 01:41:49 PM
Also, W8JI has some good information.  He designed some of these amps and can help you out.  Suggest sending him an e-mail.

Take alook at the manual at http://www.ameritron.com/man/pdf/AL-82.pdf.  There are multiple taps that can be used.  However, seems that the 245V is the highest you can go.

I hope this helps!

67  eHam Forums / Elmers / PSK31 Help on: March 30, 2009, 05:55:07 AM
Seems that the two previous posters are on the right track.  Endure that your transmitter is going on TX.  BTW, is your computer equipped with a serial port, or does it use USB ports.

I use a RigBlaster Plus at home to an ICOM IC-746.  When I changed computers some years ago, I had to buy a USB to serial converter an set the ports accordingly in the software I was using for digital modes.  Check to see that the right port is set on the software.  As one of the above posters said, you should see your own signal in the waterfall display in the computer.  Also, by using the monitor function in the IC-735, you should be able to hear the warbling of your PSK-31 signal going out.

To tune for the best output, I normally adjust the power in CW to about 50 watts.  I then adjust the PSK-31 signal for an output that will not activate the ALC.  This should give you 20-25 watts of very clean signal.

Good luck and let us know how you make out on this.

68  eHam Forums / Elmers / Cushcraft MA5B. High SWR on: March 25, 2009, 12:58:46 PM
After 7 years, I have never had a problem, but I am aware of the interface box and traps having issues.

One thing I strongly would take a look at is at the twin leads attached to the matching box.  Corrosion of the nuts attaching the leads to the box, as well as a lose lug could be the culprit.

Another possibility causing high SWR is something shorting the active elements to the boom.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.  It will be good "lessons learned" for the community.

As a fellow amateur said above, don't feed the trolls!  But, in this case, I must say something about this!

Someone that does not want to sign with theit own call letters must have some sort of problem.  As that Great American, Harry S. Truman, said, "take the  heat or get out of the kitchen."

I learned 5 wpm and got my license and upgraded in 2000 after they took away the requirements for CW.  Only problem is that that is where the fun and the rare DX are, on the CW part of the band.  So now I am up to 10-12 wpm and improving and having the time of my life.

In any case, I can argue until I am out of spit.  You can learn CW and enjoy the hobby completely, or you can limit yourself to USB and join the gang on  14.275 MHz.  Based on your attitude and inane  comment, that would be a good place for you to hang out.

I just hope that you are not a provate pilot and is trying to screw up that area, too.

Enjoy 14.275!!!!

Have a nice life!!!!
70  eHam Forums / Elmers / electronic keyers on: March 23, 2009, 07:09:33 AM
Even though the Icom IC-746 I use has a built in keyer, I have been using a CW Keyer from microHam for about 5 years now with excellent results.

You can find them at:

Good luck de Bert, KA2UUP
71  eHam Forums / Elmers / Strange "beacon" on: March 05, 2009, 09:30:28 AM
Maybe he got out of jail!!!

Seriously, although not a beacon, I have heard some CW on Am lately.  Seems like harmonics to me!

72  eHam Forums / Elmers / Vertical Antennas - Do Radials Radiate? on: March 04, 2009, 12:56:27 PM
No.
73  eHam Forums / Elmers / Plasma tv on: February 27, 2009, 10:15:33 AM
I have a 3-year-old Panasonic 42" plasma TV.  Noisy to the point where I have to turn it off when operating.  Gets into the AM radio in the kitchen, too.  Most of the noise is generated by the white colors.

I have tried all the stuff out there and still no joy!!!!

I would suggest an LCD display.  Much quieter!

Good luck DE Bert @ KA2UUP
74  eHam Forums / Elmers / High level electrical buzz on 2 radios on: February 24, 2009, 12:43:05 PM
Do you have one of those touch control lamps?  I recently had a problem with noise at home, especially when pointing my beam antenna in a certain direction.  One day, my wife asked me how come the touch control lamp in the bedroom was on.  I told her to turn the lamp off and watch if it would come on when I transmitted.  Sure enough, it did.  I disconnected the lamp from the plug and all the  backgound noise I had (S-7+) went away.  It seems that those things are not filtered properly and are noisy even when they are off.  BTW, the lamp might even be located someplace else in the neighborhood.

Good luck DE Bert @ KA2UUP
75  eHam Forums / Elmers / MA5B vs HF5B or similar mini-beams on: February 17, 2009, 01:06:39 PM
Yes, the MA5B is tunable on all bands IF you have an antenna matchbox tuner.  However, the antenna manual only shows one adjustment table for the 20 meter band, not for the 10, 12, 15, or 17 meter bands.
