A little confusing- is it general coverage RX? Any other comments? Build quality?

I have several of the Pomona units designed to hang jumpers, test leads etc. They are simple and work great. Model 1508.

4  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / BENDIX 261.1 POWER/ VSWR METER on: May 16, 2013, 09:20:50 AM
I have the detector head for the above wattmeter- but cannot find any information on the display unit.
It also says M.C. Jones Electronics. Pretty neat coupler as it is rated from 500KHz to 225mHz.
Does anyone on the group have any data?

Tnx,

If he shows his face at Dayton, there will be a line to clean his clock.

6  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: RESTORED SBE MODEL 33 HF RIG on: May 06, 2013, 05:33:11 PM
Hi Pete,
Hopefully you can  make one working rig from the pair. One has to wonder why anyone would strip the rig of the active devices though.
It really is a fun rig. Maybe a tad low on mic gain- I am using a preamplified handheld D-104 on mine.  Likely, the original mic was just fine.
Let me know if I can help.

Run it by KM1H, he worked for National during that time period.

Hi Mike et al,

I had an SBE 35 here for a short while (there are several pix on my site). It may have been a prototype. After many hours of work, I never got it fully playing. Some have guessed it was made in JA, but all of the parts I recall were American- including the crystal filter. Never owned the 36, although I have seen some for sale at hamfests. My CX-7A, due in this week also has Nixie tubes. Except for an early Heathkit counter, I think this will be my second Nixie piece.

The SBE counter now has a nice matching blue backlight- easier to read than the green also.

I just posted  photos of the restored SBE 33. Pretty rough when it arrived, and of course, not working. When I checked the oscillators (VFO, HFO, Carrier) I quickly found the HF oscillator was dead. Fortunately- all of the active devices are socketed. Unfortunately, getting at Q3 meant removing shields and tilting the front panel out. E/B/C voltages were all off. Upon inspection, Q3 was a silicon NPN and should have been a Ge PNP. A couple of walks through alignment and a new 12BY7A (subbed  for a 12DQ7) and the radio was working. BTW, I had 3 new 12BY7A's and one used. The used one generated 3dB more Po than the new ones.

I changed out the mic gain pot for one with a switch so I could disable filaments when just listening. I also added a Cumbria Designs X-Lock to the VFO (although it was already much better than the SBE  34 VFO's) and an external counter designed to look like the SBE gear. Anyway, the rig is very creatively designed  both mechanically and electrically. Faust was way ahead on this one. If you have a chance to acquire  a 33 (I prefer it over the 34) pick one up. Where else will you find a rig with a stainless panel and all robins egg blue knobs and escutcheons?

11  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / 12DQ7 vs.12BY7A on: May 01, 2013, 06:22:23 PM
Can someone in the group comment on the suitability of replacing a 12DQ7 with a 12BY7A? I see some sites show them as equivalent- not sure how well  this applies to an HF RF application- driver tube.

My 12DQ7 is dead and I have a pile of 12BY7's.

Tnx,

12  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: Cordless soldering irons? on: April 29, 2013, 05:57:08 AM
I have a couple of the Weller butane irons. Very nice and ideal for tower work.
For the lab I use nothing but Hakko- the cordless or even the gas irons are very crude compared to the Hakko, Pace etc.

The first time you require company support or repair, you'll wish you had the American made K3.

They are quoting the gain with ground reflection gain included.

15  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: W4OP Hallicrafters FPM-300 MK II Restoration Video on: April 21, 2013, 12:59:19 PM
KQ6EA: The video portion ends with a short summary and then goes to a number of still shots with the audio fading at the end and video going to black- the entire YouTube is 11:44 minutes long. If yours stops before then- maybe decrease the resolution setting?

W6OU: I am not sure how  that happened re the focus. I should have caught that. Just goes to show that even expensive video equipment still requires an operator with his head on straight!. I'll run it through some video processing software that may help some. I just don't have the time to reshoot.

AD4U: I still have not installed the green band finals. It won't take long, I have just been so busy- now doing an SBE 33 project.
