I really can't answer "how" it became a basket  case, but it was on the ground underneath a table at Dayton- looking very sad.  It was purchased  for the asking price of $50 in 2000.

Thanks Bill,
I just posted my 75S-3B, Hallicrafters SX-88 (only one pix, looking for the rest) and the very rare Sideband Engineers (SBE) SB-35 to the site:
http://www.parelectronics.com/vintage-radio-restoration.php

The SX-88 was a true basket case- the front panel had to  have a new silk screen, both dial glasses were broken (and of course, they had graphics on them) and the case was a wreck. I spent  almost a full day just on the knobs.

The Collins RX was filthy but restorable with original finishes. Two tubes had been swapped out at some point, making audio low and no product detector. One wonders how these things happen- and even more intriguing, how the swap is not corrected.

Next to go up is the Hally SR-400/HA-20, the Kenwood Twins and  then the Morrow Twins.

I just bought a Fanon hand held 6CH 5W CB with the intent  of putting it on 10M AM and using it as a monitor.
The Fanon's are pretty nice- built like tanks and metal case- not the plastic you find on a lot of the CB HT's. It will be here next week. I'll soon have 2X as much  invested in crystals as I do in the HT. Think it's the TR-808.
I always thought the General Radiotelephone CB series would make a nice 10M rig-  variable tuning and  one could make a new freq dial calibrated for 10M..
C U on AM,

Congrats- that is quite a catch. The G-28's are quite rare. You see a few G-50's around, but the few guys that own the G-28's won't let them out of their site.

The CCD is  a flawed design. No better than an equivalent center fed antenna without  all of the nonsense. I  believe Cebik came to the same conclusion., although I have not read that article in several years.

Coils at the ends of a dipole tend to behave  like capacity hats.
As you move the coil out from the center, more and more turns are required.
Use a capacity hat to draw the current out.

Hi Will,
So nice to hear from you.
The 4350 was a bit of  a basket case when I got it. A friend, W0TDH came back from the Shelby 'fest with a 4300. I repaired the 75:1 drive for him and was very impressed with the RX sound and VFO stability.
So I bought a 4350 and added the xtal cal. Mine also needed the 75:1 drive to be repaired but is now silky smooth. The neat thing (that I am sure you recall) is that  by grabbing the inner knob you can QSY the band instantaneously. Audio is absolutely fabulous. The  current project is to add  a product detector with AGC as the stock CW/SSB is the typical BFO and no AGC. Along with the product detector I am adding a Murata filter to help with SSB/CW selectivity. The mod is a snap as RME already provided IF OUT/ AUDIO IN RCA jacks to  the rear panel.

I would take the 4350 over any of  the Hammarlunds, Hally's or Nationals I have owned.

1000V would assume at some point along the line there existed a 2meg Ohm point (current minima) . Even thin wire end fed antennas in free space seldom get over 4K when resonant. How did you come up with 1000V? Just curious.

I have made a small dent in getting some of my restoration photos on my site. I hope thse will perhaps be a help to others looking for details of some of the older rigs as they do their own restoration. About 40 more rigs to go- but it's a start.
Text for each rig to follow, then I'll continue adding more rigs:

I think the common mode issue is why so many hams today believe they can adjust VSWR by trimming the coaxial cable length.
If trimming your coax changes the VSWR:
1. You have common mode issues
2. Your coax is other than 50 Ohms- a real possibility these days I suppose
3. Your measuring instrument is not 50 Ohms

There's probably other reasons  that I overlooked.

A walk down a Smith Chart should convince you that changing coax length only rotates around the chart on a constant VSWR circle. This from meory- haven't done it in years.

It's an end fed half wave- so same gain as a dipole IF you can keep radiation currents off the mast and the outside of the coax- this is the downfall of all of the groundplanes, J poles etc.

I was an engineer at Avanti when the Sigma IV design was being built. It's a J pole- nothing more and nothing less. No magic,

238  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: RME 4350 CRYSTAL CALIBRATOR on: November 16, 2011, 08:55:33 PM
Thanks,
I have the manual and know the approx location. I was hoping someone with a dial calipers could give me exact dimensions. I'll go with some WEB photos I have.
I have added a simple product detector using the rear panel jacks so now have product detection with AGC- a really nice improvement.
Tnx,

239  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RME 4350 CRYSTAL CALIBRATOR on: November 16, 2011, 02:37:17 PM
Does anyone on the group have a 4350A and  can give me the location of the crystal calibrator toggle switch: from the bottom of the black escutcheon and in from the right edge of the escutcheon.

Tnx,

240  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Loose 572B Plate cap on: November 07, 2011, 06:02:59 PM
One of my 572's plate cap is a bit loose. Is there a hi temp cement that can be used to secure it?

Tnx,
Dale W4OP
