Please, do not let this worry you. I can not imagine the FCC mandating any mode for amateur radio. They have never done so before and there is no reason for them to start now, with the amateur radio service. What they DO need to do, however, is to loosen up the regulations that prevent the use of digital modes in portions of our spectrum. Experimentation is what ham radio is all about.

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: ReMounting Larsen Glass Antennas

Personally I think it would be risky to use off the shelf tape or glue on this antenna. I do know that MFJ makes a re-mount kit for their glass mount antennas. I would be surprised if Larson did not do the same. You should dig around their product line, or call a dealer and ask. If their glass mount antenna base is the same as the MFJ antenna, then the MFJ kit should work. Good luck.

On the other hand, I just purchased a new IC-706MKIIG from GigaParts recently. Their listed price was equal or lower than other sources I checked. It was shipped promptly and received as expected. I was well informed of the order status by email.
On another recent order a cable I ordered was missing. An email to the company was promptly acknowledged and the missing part shipped same day.
I certainly have no beef with GigaParts.

Are you asking for documentation that goes beyond the product manual with that unit? The MFJ manual is available for download at the factory site.
I do not know of any ' enhanced ' tutorials on using that device, but if there are such available I'd be interested too.

I would be interested in finding out more on how your neighbor reacted to the information you just posted. You DID advise him of that situation, didn't you? Assuming he now knows his equipment is junk, and since he declined to have you, or even himself perform an attempted fix, what was his state of mind when you last spoke to him on this?

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Resonant antenna vs using an antenna tuner?

Oops. My Bad... its late, I'm tired... did not realize the actual question.
Yes, you can use a nice remote tuner in the trunk to tune a whip... as long as that tuner can handle the large inductance required for 75M... I don't know of any than can tune 75M without at least an 8 foot whip.... but would probably work great on the higher bands.
The higher the loading coil on a whip, the better the radiation characteristics, so a tuner at the bottom is not as effective as a center loaded whip you described.... but still it would work.

Once you burn a bridge behind you its hard to get back across. If that neighbor has been a good one, I would want to make every effort possible to remedy the problem before making a move for which there is no return. An unhappy neighbor can be more than just an annoyance in some cases.
I'll be following this thread closely to see what others' may come up with for a possible remedy.

I can not over emphasize what KC7YRA told you. The antenna is absolutely key to a great station. If you don't already have such, I would suggest you take at least half that $10K and spend it on tower/antenna system/feedline/etc.
As far as I am concerned $3K will get you as good a radio as should be needed.
Good luck and happy spending, in any case.

You need to describe your antenna before a good assessment can be made of what you are trying to do with those " radials ".

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: INSTALLING AND ANTENNA ON A FIBERGLASS MOTOR HOME

Two things I failed to mention in the previous post: The use of the Inverted V precludes the need to use your vehicle chassis as a ground / counterpoise. Second, if you do use a vertical antenna, running a large wire, or better yet tinned copper braid, down the ladder and to the chassis should provide a minimal but adequate counterpoise. In any case, I would also suggest you install a choke balun at or very near the HF antenna feed point. RFI to electronics in the motorhome is always an issue.

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: INSTALLING AND ANTENNA ON A FIBERGLASS MOTOR HOME
|

On our Monaco motor home I only install and operate an HF antenna when parked. I mount it on the rear ladder. I have run RF cable from a jack I installed near the hitch , along the frame, and up into the radio area ( had that done professionally ). Sometimes I use a 23 foot telescopic aluminum vertical, and more recently simply a 22 foot fibre glass telescopic flag pole supporting an inverted V. I feed both with a rear mounted remote tuner ( SG-237). Having a rear ladder is key to this, but if you just use a flag pole, you can get a under-the-tire mount for the flag pole. http://www.polesandholders.com has good quality, stiff, flag poles and mounts. For Two Meters I used a small Larson L bracket mounted just above the passenger front seat window area and ran my coax through the coach wall into the interior ( a front cabinet area ). I use an Antenex half wave 2M antenna which requires no ground plane. It works adequately, but I want better so am planning on mounting one on the center front of the roof. I will mount a small ~ 12" x 24" aluminum plate, probably glued down with Dicor, and put a 1/4 wave 2M whip on that. That should work well for 440MHz as a 3/4 whip, by the way. Running the coax ought to be fun...... ( not ). Ed K7AAT

A true V antenna is highly directional, if you have it a few wavelengths long, or longer. If that is what you want, and have room for, go for it. Personally, I would prefer an omnidirectional antenna such as the Inverted V pattern, unless I had a directional antenna I could rotate.
