eHam Forums / Repeaters / DB 4048 Duplexer

I have a DB 4048 duplexer that I would like to convert for 2 meters. I have the informational sheets that tells what is necessary to do that task. My question is the loop connectors, (for the conversion) available somewhere or does one just have to manufacture their own. If manufacturing on site, can the existing ones but cut and extensions soldered in (for the long ones) and then cut the existing ones to the shorter length and solder them together. Will this work? Thanks for your help. George N9DO

eHam Forums / Computers And Software / very small typeface on some emails
|
on: August 26, 2011, 09:14:27 AM

I receive emails from two different people whose typeface on the email screen appears to be around 12pt. When I send that page to print, it prints out at about 2pt type. I cannot find out why, not have I been able to change it. I copy it, send it to MS Word and then set whatever typeface I want and then print it out. Why is this typeface so very small on the original printout? All other emails I receive will print out exactly as seen on the screen. Thanks.

eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Drake TR-4C is silent

I have nice, (not museum quality but nice) TR-4C xmtr. It was given to me from a SK's estate and has worked perfectly until now. I seldom use the rig but yesterday I turned it on and it didn't make a sound of any kind. I turned every knob and checked and rechecked connections, antennas, etc. After 10 minutes or so I heard a sound from the speaker and turned the VFO up and down to find a signal. I finally found a station on 20M very, very weak, that was the only thing I heard on any band. I'm not that well versed on tube rigs and have little test equipment, so I'm wondering if anyone could point me in a direction to try to get the rig speaking again? No doubt I probably will have to have someone knowledgable on tube rigs to fix it for me. Thanks, George N9DO

eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Wall-wart RF hash?

I read in this months QST about wall-warts on Linksys routers causing rf hash. I have that system on my computer. The recommended solution to that problem is to change the wall-wart to a linear PS. OK, but how do I tell what is a linear supply or a switching supply. I have several wall-warts but there is no indication, as far as I can tell what is what. Thanks for your help. George

eHam Forums / Digital / Computer won't access TNC

I'm using an PK 232 MBX TNC with my old Win 95 machine. It's been running perfectly for several years now. Recently the BIOS battery died in the computer and after much frustration I was able to get the two devices to communicate once again. Yesterday I turned on the computer and TNC to operate RTTY and the computer loaded the beginning page of the packrat program, but when I asked it to open the TNC I got the error message "Can't access TNC". I've tried everything and can't seem to find the problem. Nothing has been changed that I'm aware of at least. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks, Fred

eHam Forums / Elmers / Cannot open PK 232 TNC

on: January 14, 2010, 09:46:55 AM

I've had this PK 232 MBX running for several years, no problem. Recently my computer (a Gateway 2000, running Win 95), yes I know this is a dinosaur, but it serves the purpose for my packet uses, told me my BIOS battery had died. I replaced that battery and now the computer will not recognize my 232 TNC. It looks to me that everything is wired correctly as before, but my PK configuration tells me that I'm on com port 1. My computer looks to me that it is on com port 2. When I try to change to com port 2 on the PK configuration, I get this message "Can't change com port when TNC window is open". How can I get my computer to recognize the TNC once again? Thanks for your help, Fred

Thanks everyone for your kindness and for the information on the Yaesu antenna tuner. I'll get with my friend in a few days, and we'll get into the heart of the tuner and see what makes it work. George N9DO

eHam Forums / Elmers / Yaesu antenna tuner
|
on: December 07, 2009, 09:43:22 AM
|
|
A new ham in my area has purchased an older Yaesu antenna tuner for HF use. I do not know the model number as yet, and I must admit I'm not all that familiar with outboard antenna tuners, my rigs all have built-in tuners. The new ham tells me that the controls on the front of the tuner turn completely around, 360 degrees over and over, never stopping. And he doesn't believe the tuner works correctly. This seems strange to me as my tube amplifier, variable capacitor and inductor do not revolve around and around. They move approximately 180 degrees stop to stop. I have not yet examined the tuner and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on what to look for. Or is this action of the controls perfectly normal? Thanks for your info. George

My friend whom I'm elmering in getting his ham license recently purchased a Kenwood 820S, used of course. I have checked it over and it seems to be in very good condition, except the vfo turns very hard. What is wrong and how can it be fixed? I've owned a new 520s, a new 830sat and a 930sat and none of these radios vfo's turned hard, as matter of fact you could literally spin the vfo knobs. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, George, N9DO

eHam Forums / Elmers / 17M antenna question
|
on: March 10, 2009, 11:20:34 AM

|
I have a double extended zepp on 17M, it has become very noisy. I re-installed a simple 17M dipole I had up previously in an Inverted V configuration, it's also very noisy. My 40M dipole on 17M, (receive only) seems to be much quieter than the two previous antennas mentioned. And my 10-15-20M tri-bander is even much quieter than all antennas mentioned on receive only of course. What is going on here? Is it just band conditions on 17M or what? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, George, N9DO

My PK-232 and my old Win 95 computer with PC Pakratt V. 2.0, have served me well for years. Recently the computer booted up and had a message that my CMOS battery was dead. I replaced that battery. Now my computer says it cannot connect to the PK-232MBX. I've tried everything I can think of. Nothing has been changed, cables, terminal, etc., just the battery in the computer. I can get the Pakratt program up and running but it will not key the radio. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, N9DO

This is the only thing that I could get to work for me. Try it. Let me know if it works for you. Westell 6100 Configuration for Port Forwarding and Static NAT 1. Log into your modem by typing 192.168.1.1 into your address bar. The default username and password are: admin password If the login is still the default you will have to change the password since you have never logged into it before. (It won’t let you configure until you do) 2. Move your mouse over the “configuration” menu and click “Service Configuration.” 3. Click “New” 4. Select “A New Service Profile #1” from the “Current Profile” drop-down menu. 5. Click “Static NAT” and then click “enable” in the popup window. 6. Click “Define Custom Service” 7. Make sure “Port Forwarding” is selected and click “Next” 8. Set the “Global Port Range” to 6346-6346 and “Base Host Port” to 6346 and select “TCP” then click “Next” 9. Click “Add” 10. Set the “Global Port Range” to 6346-6346 and “Base Host Port” to 6346 and select “UDP” then click “next” 11. click “Close” 12. From the “Service Name” drop-down menu go the whole way to the bottom and select the service you just created which is named “*My New Service” by default and click “Enable” To check your setting disable your firewall and run the connection test at http://fission-datasoft.co.nr/ctest/If it works, then you know you did it right. All there is now is to configure your firewall …(Most of the time you just have to set the internet zone to “medium”)
