61  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: World War II field radios on: December 19, 2009, 10:14:56 AM
Alan is indeed correct. If Philip does not know about a particular green radio, he knows who does.
Rich Arland, K7SZ, is also quite knowledgeable and
has given many presentations on green radios and QRP
at several radio club meetings.
Rich is also the author for the ARRL book "Low Power Communication"  ISBN 0-87259-104-2.
Rich will be doing the program for the January meeting
of our local club in Winder, Ga.
See  http://www.barrowhamradio.org/
I met Rich through Philip and can attest that both men are worth knowing.  Although Philip has this strange need to attach a 33 ft Military antenna to his car and go mobiling through Savannah, Ga.  :-D
In any event, these two guys can put you in touch with a large ham sub-culture of green radio users and
lovers.

All of this talk from Steve, Alan and Tom about radials is about to drive this RETIREE to go on a SIPE HUNT~!
Just saying "Don't TREAD on me" is no longer sufficient.  And that is my BIASED opinion.
I am going to the bar now for a couple of BELTS.

65  eHam Forums / Elmers / LDG 1:1 Balun Center Fed Antenna? on: November 21, 2009, 09:24:27 PM
All 1:1 Baluns support, to some degree, center fed dipoles.  You do not give enough information with your question.  Details suach as;
1. VSWR across the band and not just one frequency.
2. Height of antenna above ground.
3. Proximity of antenna to other objects: Trees, power lines, buildings, etc.
4. Type of feedline being used.

Elmering minds want to know...

We need to get Philip, KA4KOE, to play "Ride of the Valkyries" and "The William Tell Overture" on his Theremin as background music for this thread!

This is getting so rough and tumble that Phil Sr. and I are beginning to take all of this as serious business.

I do have one question, though;  If the climate changing people take away all of the carbon dioxide,
we would no longer have beer, be able to exhale, nor would vegetation have anything to photo synthesize!!
I don't mind holding my breath or trees holding theirs, either.  However hams without 807s is just one step too far!!!

Tom, Don and Alan;

I am just happy that no one has brought up cage
fractal antennas w/gain!

  Talk about silly threads!

Why buy when you can build for cheap?

Check the below websites out:

http://www.eham.net/articles/4319

http://neasmn.org/squalo/squalo.htm

Both work pretty well and are cheap to build.
They are also fairly stout and can take some abuse.

73,  see you on 6!

Two things further:

1. Remember to put old newspaper under your cage antenna. You don't want your XYL fussing about residue on the floor!

2.  Cage antennas have gain because the marketing guys
sell them by the *LINEAR FOOT!*

Uhhhhhh! Three things!

3.  Ceiling Fan Dipoles have circular polarization only while the ceiling fan is running.

Dr. Ed Joy would kill me if he saw the above!  Smiley

An ancient ARRL Antenna Book tells me that the Haddon
(SP?) Fish Bone Antenna had more gain per acre than a Rhombic!

I would think you could certainly check into more
NETS with the Fish Bone Antenna!
