If you're feeling brave you could always tap the holes to accept a standard USA screw size. I've done this with some kit manufactured in the USA so that I could use metric screws and had no problems.

32  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Why is ALC A Negative Voltage? on: October 03, 2006, 05:44:18 AM
Something I've often wondered but never thought of asking. When an amplifier supplies an ALC signal why is it always negative with respect to chassis?

33  eHam Forums / Elmers / IC-R7000 Sync Detector Circuit on: October 02, 2006, 12:25:19 PM
The old Lowe receivers made in the UK had a Sync AM Detector as well. Not many of them around these days though.

Good guess Alan. A WHOIS enquiry on the domain gets the following information:

35  eHam Forums / Elmers / High Current Power Supplies on: September 28, 2006, 02:03:39 PM
The cost of a high current supply depends on two things, luck and the ability to spot a bargain. I have a supply in my shack that supplies 13.8 volts at 45 amps.

The transformer came from the filament supply of a hospital x-ray machine and is VERY heavy. The heatsink for the output transistors came from a local electronics store and weighs about two pounds. I managed to bargain the price down because a couple of the fins were bent.

Take your time looking for parts, be prepared to bargain and a high current supply can be constructed with little cost. Buy all the parts new and your wallet will empty quickly.

36  eHam Forums / Misc / Optical Fiber on: September 28, 2006, 01:53:59 PM
OK, I'll try to explain.

I have a piece of equipment in the shack that has two surface-mount LEDs on the PCB. These LEDs come on in various combinations depending on the status of the equipment.

With the cover on I can't see the PCB so I want to mount a small piece of optical fiber over each LED and push the other end through a small hole in the front panel.

Now do you see why I don't need connectors?

OK, first thing, is it fibre or fiber when you're talking about the optical variety?

Right, now we've got that out of the way I need a favor from somebody. I need two pieces of optical fiber for a project. Each piece needs to be about three inches long with both ends polished. No connectors are required on either of the pieces.

Can anyone help? Email HA5RXZ@google.com if you can assist.

Thanks

38  eHam Forums / Digital / Monitor Sync Problem on: September 26, 2006, 06:03:26 AM
The LCD monitor cable was fixed at one end and had a plug at the other. Inside the monitor I found that the red ground connection was floating but the others were connected to ground.

The Dell did not connect ANY of the signal grounds except the cable shield but the second PC I tried had red, green and blue ground connected to the chassis.

Five minutes with a soldering iron and things are perfect. Thanks to all those who offered help and suggestions.

39  eHam Forums / Elmers / voltage balancing device ? on: September 25, 2006, 02:03:02 AM
Two big diodes (and I mean REALLY BIG). The voltage drop across a diode is fixed and won't change if different current is drawn. You need to find a diode which will carry 25 amps on a continuous basis. Put one in series with the + output of each supply.

Heatsinks on the diodes will be required.

40  eHam Forums / Station Building / FT2000 vs. 756 PROIII on: September 22, 2006, 06:09:52 AM
The 756 ProIII has been out for a while and Icom have probably got the bugs out. It's also an evolution from the original IC-756 and IC-756 ProII.

The FT-2000 has all the latest technology but hasn't even hit the dealers yet. Based on what I've seen with the FT-9000 I'm willing to bet that FT-2000 users will be beta testing for Yaesu.

Go for the Icom.

41  eHam Forums / Elmers / Can 2 pieces of coax be used as balanced line? on: September 19, 2006, 05:06:10 AM
Yes, they can.

Join the shields at both ends and just use the inner cores, when using 50 ohm coax you will end up with a 100 ohm balanced feeder.

43  eHam Forums / Digital / Monitor Sync Problem on: September 17, 2006, 06:58:17 AM
The cable is the same (it's attached permanently to the LCD panel). I'm pretty sure that this is not a driver problem because I get the out of sync red lines under all circumstances, even when running the BIOS setup.

I get the red lines under all resolutions from 640 x 480 upwards.

The weird thing is that if I put an image on the screen of a white rectangle I don't see the red lines across the rectangle, just in the background, It's almost as if the red driver circuits are not turning off properly. Despite this the LCD panel running on a different machine looks perfect and the Dell PC with its original CRT monitor doesn't have the fault.

44  eHam Forums / Digital / Monitor Sync Problem on: September 14, 2006, 02:08:39 PM
OK

1) I tried changing the settings for the LCD on both the PC and the screen itself with no positive result. The wanted image is crisp and clear but the red out of sync image in the background remains. Changing refresh rate from 50 Hz to 60 Hz then 70 Hz has no effect apart from a minor change in image width.

2) The correct driver for the LCD monitor is loaded and working (the CD came in the box).

3) There's no point contacting Dell as the monitor is made by Viewsonic. In any event the standard solution of "please reload MS Windows" wouldn't cure the fault as I get the red out of sync image during boot before windows even loads.

Thanks for the help so far.

45  eHam Forums / Digital / Monitor Sync Problem on: September 13, 2006, 12:27:21 PM
OK, not really ham radio but I'm hoping that someone can help.

I have a Dell PC which I use in the shack. Using the old CRT monitor that came with the system the picture is perfect. Using a new LCD monitor I get a stable (wanted) image on the screen but flickering red lines behind it. The lines look like an out of sync image.

When the LCD monitor is tested on another machine this also looks perfect. Does anyone know what would cause such an incompatability between a Dell PC and a Viewsonic monitor?
