1  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: Sloped-front meter box?? on: April 11, 2013, 10:38:42 AM
Yes, exactly!!!
But I have my own uA meter....Perhaps I'll call 'em and ask what the hole cutout is....I could just swap.

2  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Sloped-front meter box?? on: April 11, 2013, 05:57:12 AM
I'm searching for one of those boxes...like you may remember in high school/college lab classes....black wrinkle-paint sloped front box with two banana plugs at the bottom.
Yes, I could get any Bud box or Radio Shack project box (still made??) and use a Greenlee chassis punch for the meter, but I know they were once manufactured...ready to go for the size meter being used. (Ma, V etc).

Might they be available, or should I give up the search from the get-go??

Thanks !!
3  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Build That Heathkit! on: April 02, 2013, 05:11:33 AM
Your thoughts??
I have an unbuilt Heathkit IM-2212 autoranging DVM kit.
I am thinking of building it.
I am considering it only for the fun of it, watching it come to life, and the challenge.
If I do, what components do you think are risky?
The dates on the update sheets and instruction manual are all from around 1979. So, I figured I should replace
all the electrolytics with new ones, and those cheap IC sockets that Heath used could be replaced with gold plated jobs
from Mouser.
In the end, this thing does no more than my handheld Fluke....but with a shoebox full of parts! (In fact, I don't think it has anything on those cheap 10 dollar units from Harbor Freight!!!)  Having worked for HP/Agilent....before they went down the tubes, I have about 5 more high end bench DVM's then I need, so the smart thing to do with this unbuilt kit would just be to put it on ebay.....but I'm still thinking about it.
4  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: Read frequency of tuning fork on counter on: February 19, 2013, 03:27:16 PM
the "motor" theory is cool, but might be mechanically difficult.
Anything touching the tuning fork....even lightly...stops it from
vibrating instantly.
5  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Read frequency of tuning fork on counter on: February 18, 2013, 10:30:50 AM
Trying to read the frequency of a tuning fork using my counter.
I suspect my dynamic tape recorder microphone just does not have the
output required for the counter to trigger.

So, would you suggest a ceramic or crystal element....or is there a WAY better
method of doing this.....without building a circuit to add to the mix.

Thanks for any suggestions.

6  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Experimenter miniature lamp base for cub scouts?? on: January 28, 2013, 08:01:37 PM
Such a simple item, now unobtanium??
For my Cub Scout pack to experiment with simple DC circuit, I need one of those little bulb bases.
They usually had two small screws, or even better, spring loaded fahenstock clips. They were usually made of ceramic, Porcelain, or black plastic. They are used with the small screw in #47 size bulbs.
Can anyone suggest a source? I can't find 'em!!
7  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: testing an audio amplifier on: January 21, 2013, 07:17:46 AM
I found Tektronix 600 ohm BNC terminations, but crazy expensive! Grin.
Found another online source at a better price.  Yes, I could alligator clip wire a few
standard resistors and get electrically the same thing...but it's always nicer when there is some
neatness involved!!javascript:void(0);
8  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: testing an audio amplifier on: January 20, 2013, 03:18:11 PM
Got all of them except for the 600 ohm BNC type terminators.
Anyone got an extra they might part with??  Smiley
9  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: testing an audio amplifier on: January 20, 2013, 12:29:26 PM
Nothing serious, just trying to learn...So at the moment, testing for distortion, output,
freq response.
10  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / testing an audio amplifier on: January 19, 2013, 02:38:45 PM
Can someone clarify the requirements to test a simple audio amp?
I saw on a utube video someone that was doing this. He had his audio oscillator
going into the input connection of the amp, but using a TEE adapter, with a 600 ohm load on the other
end of the tee. Why is this? Is it to provide the correct input impedance that the amp requires, or some other
reason?
I suspect the amp then goes to an 8 ohm load, big enough to handle whatever power out the amp provides. Then how do
you connect a scope, or distortion analyzer, or spectrum analyzer to the output? Somehow, you must tap on to that 8 ohm load, but using what?  (Don't want to blow up the piece of test equipment!!!
Thanks for any thoughts!!
11  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: HEATHKIT GC-1108 clock owners?? on: August 26, 2012, 07:43:11 PM
Tnx w9gb!   Yup, that's the one....green LED. And does not use the wood grain plastic like the previous two.
If you find the info, could you email it to me at kd2e@comcast.net?
Tnx...Dave
12  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / ANY circuit board WITH cad file needed on: July 18, 2012, 04:34:57 AM
Can anyone make a suggestion to help me out?
I need a circuit board along with the component and placement CAD file for
teaching myself a piece of test equipment for work.
If it was something I could use in the shack....all the more better!!!
Does anyone know if the ARRL handbook's included CD ROM have this?
A keyer, or anything??

If you have any thoughts or ideas as to where I could get this, I would very much appreciate it.

It doesn't matter so much what the board is or what it does...just that it has this CAD file included.

Thanks!!    Dave  KD2E
13  eHam Forums / Contesting / VHF/UHF Sprints on: February 29, 2012, 03:18:07 PM
I googled the subject to get the dates for this year. Only found the 2011 dates.
Does anyone have the schedule for 2012?
Are there spring sprints and fall sprints?
To anyone who has operated them....will you find much activity on them?
Thanks!

14  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: 146.52MHz while mobile? on: February 29, 2012, 03:11:26 PM
A few years ago, I drove home from Dayton Hamfest....Ohio to New Jersey.
Listened to .52 all the way home, and the squelch never broke.
Many years ago...when 2 meter FM was hot...late '70s...I could find a
contact on .52 most anytime...with my TR22 or Clegg HT146 and a 1/4 wave whip!!
15  eHam Forums / Satellites / Dual-Receive VHF/UHF mobile rig?? on: February 21, 2012, 08:42:46 AM
Can anyone suggest a dual receive (listen to downlink while transmitting) mobile rig that does not
have APRS, or D star....just basic..ie cheap!
Thanks!!
