31  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: HEATHKIT GC-1108 clock owners?? on: December 04, 2011, 02:41:25 PM
I have both those two, but no...this is a GC-1108....with 9 volt battery backup.
It probably is a simple jumper or two, but not sure without the manual.
32  eHam Forums / Misc / HEATHKIT GC-1108 clock owners?? on: December 03, 2011, 05:04:10 PM
Anyone have this clock?  It is a bit more rare than the earlier ones.
I'd like to find out the procedure for changing from 24 hour time to 12 hour time.

Of course, its not a switch Huh
If it involves too much, I'll put it in the shack and use it as is. Sadly, I don't have the manual.

Thanks!
33  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Tuning a SB101 on: November 20, 2011, 05:22:04 AM
Well, if you figure the Heathkit out, you also have the Collins, Drake, old Kenwoods...etc etc. figured out. Some have extra knobs, or call things different names, but...all the same idea.
I would suggest two things. Always have a wattmeter connected. Usually, maximum output occurs when everything is adjusted correctly. If at 100 watts, and you still have too much plate current, try adjusting your loading control. If you don't get a nice dip when adjusting the plate, either your loading is incorrect...or your antenna is far from resonant.
Most important....don't sit in tune too long while figuring stuff out...you'll smoke the tubes.
The Heath's 6146's are a bit more robust than a Swan or old Yaesu's sweep tubes....but they still don't like to be hammered  on in an untuned state.
34  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: HEATHKIT TO START KIT PRODUCTION AGAIN on: November 20, 2011, 05:12:21 AM
Don't count on seeing any ham radio kits very soon.  From the scuttlebutt going around, it looks like they'll be making electronic kits again, but for general projects, not specialties like ham radio.

I suspect ham radio kits is their number one target. But, I doubt you will see any of the crazy stuff folks are asking for. Working radios, or amps, probably would not be a prudent entry point. Think anything that is one board, one box...with the
least amount of extra knobs, switches, connectors, plugs etc.  All the little "sit on top" station accessories would be a good starting point.  There are a few items that currently don't exist (quality ones, that is) that I would buy in a heartbeat!!
Can't wait!!!
35  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Crystal Radio earphone best price on: November 13, 2011, 03:49:13 PM
Want to build Crystal Radio kit for the Cub Scouts.
Looks like the highest cost item is either the magnet wire or the
earphone.
Here is my best price on the earphone. Does anyone know of a better
source for this item?

Heck....I'll get one too and try out my old Heathkit crystal radio!!
Thanks for any input!!

36  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / RE: Cub Scout lightbulb energy consumption demo?? on: November 08, 2011, 11:47:15 AM
You can get a Panel Meter like http://www.hoytmeter.com/products/CK_616_Analog_Panel_Meter.html which is measuring AC current. the range should be about 1A for a max 120W bulb.
Wire this in series with a switch SPDT to connect to either one of the bulbs.
For similar circuits see http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_6/chpt_2/4.html
Replace the battery by line voltage. And be cautious  Wink

I'm confused...is that a plain 'ol meter with AC current scale markings....or does it have built in diode circuit to use in an AC circuit??  (which would be sweet!!)
37  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / Cub Scout lightbulb energy consumption demo?? on: November 08, 2011, 08:08:10 AM
Can anyone help me out with a link, or a simple circuit for the following....
I might step up to the plate and have our local scouts sell light bulbs. (Some flavor of energy efficient type).
I would like to build a box with two bulb sockets, a meter, and two switches. The meter would show the standard
bulb using more energy than the other. I have an old Triplett AC watt meter, but not only do I not want that being shared around, but I'd also like everything sealed up...just switches.
Anyway, with DC...just put a current meter in series. But for this...My guess is I'd have to rectify the AC first, then proceed as in DC. Is that correct, or is there a better way?
I just thought I'd ask, 'cuz I'm sure someone has "been there, done that" .
Thanks for any and all input!

38  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Disney Cruise gadgets for Hams?? on: October 26, 2011, 03:49:08 PM
Accidently left this question in "Strays"...where it doesn't belong.
Anyway....going on a Disney Cruise next year out of NYC.
I would think that within an hour or two, I'd be out of range for any repeaters with my ht, but I
plan to bring my hand-held Garmin GPS to watch and track where I am....but can anyone suggest any other
fun gadgets to bring on a cruise?  Wondering what I might say "Wish I brought my___" when I'm out there.
What thoughts do you have that might be fun?
Thanks!!!

39  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Davis Vantage Vue software on to website on: August 15, 2011, 12:57:26 PM
Has anyone linked their Vantage Vue and Davis software on to a website...so the info can be displayed?

I'd like to do this, but just need some pointers on where to begin reading the "how-to's"

Thanks for any direction!

40  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: How to test a crystal filter on: April 20, 2011, 07:04:20 PM
Yup...done all the usual stuff.
It still attenuates in the other slot...and the other filter works fine it the suspect filters' slot.
Soldering looks perfect, nothing rattles, nothing visual.
Surprises me...6 rocks, and a handful of caps....nicely made....how could it be bad??

Stranger things have happened!!

41  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: How to test a crystal filter on: April 20, 2011, 06:39:05 PM
While shorting each crystal out, would the shorted one that brings the signal back up be the defective crystal because it
was far out of range, attenuating the signal...now it is a closed circuit?  Is that the line of thought?

42  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: How to test a crystal filter on: April 20, 2011, 04:39:08 PM
Thanks dm...I've spent some time messing with it using a crystal calibrator.
An S2 signal using the other filters completely vanishes...as in "gone" when switching to
this 250 cycle filter. Even when swinging the passband back and forth. An S 9 signal will drop to about S 4 or so, and cannot
be peaked beyond the 4 with the passband.
The other 9 Mhz filter actually increases the signal when selected. It is 400 or 500 cycles.

43  eHam Forums / Misc / How to test a crystal filter on: April 20, 2011, 10:54:43 AM
The 250 Hz filter in my Ten Tec seems to be bad.
It works, but attenuates the signal by about 4 to 5 S units.
Other filters in that slot/position work fine.

So, I gotta change it.

Now....just for fun....How can I test it?

It is a 9000.75 kHz  filter.
Can I set my signal generator and go above and below that freq and see what I get
on an RF probe?....or scope?
Or pump a sweep generator to center on that frequency and look at the output with a scope?
Would you say a few milivolts??
I'm just foolin around and thought it might be fun to "play"
Thanks guys!

44  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Soldering Iron Temperature on: April 16, 2011, 10:06:00 AM
For pl259's, my American Beauty does a nice job...but the 3 prong 250 watt Weller gun is my choice for that job.
Thanks all for your input!  I've learned that around 700, depending on the work required seems to be correct.

45  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Seeking Computer Builders suggestions on speed?? on: April 15, 2011, 06:25:07 AM
Used a program to "port" or convert??   a full-length DVD to my IPAD.
With my 1.6Ghz Centrino Duo laptop, it took about 5 hours!   NUTS, I said!!!

So I tried another movie on my desktop...which I thought was faster  Huh
A P4 at 2.8 Ghz....same as the laptop....1gig of Ram.

As of this typing, its at 17 hours...about 90% finished!!!

The desktop is hombrew, standard case, upper end HP DVD drives.
Question is....Can I replace the motherboard with something current, without making changes to the
hard drive?
It is not worth my effort to format the drives, and start over. This computer has my ham software on it, and runs
just great....I suppose it just does not have the horsepower for this DVD movie thing....which must be very demanding  Embarrassed
Can you let me know what you thing?    Thanks!!    Dave
