1  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Honor Roll in One Solar Cycle on: April 07, 2013, 01:41:15 PM
I'm assuming that no one could make HR in this cycle, because it's unlikely enough entities will be activated.  Maybe that's how it will be forever. I stared DXing in April 2005 when I got back into ham radio after a 35 year hiatus. Since then I have 318 mixed worked and 317 confirmed; there will be shots at Heard, Wake and Banaba and rumored Amsterdam withing a year, but that leave me still short.  If a solar cycle is 11 years, I have until 2016 to try to complete it in a way. Missing Kure in 2006 did not help me, and I'm in the black hole for VK9X I guess.

Yeah, you came in at probably the worst time possible. I hope you worked Peter the First in 2006, cuz I doubt anybody's going back there for at least another 15 years given the now-insane costs of travel to the region and the fact there are many other entities down there that still need to be re-activated after a long absence. Lots of interesting stuff has come up since 2005, of course, but a lot more as gone off the air or has been made far more difficult to activate due to environmental concerns. KH3 and KH1 and others. Also in 2006 Turkmenistan stopped issuing licenses and has since fell completely silent.

On the other hand, since you got on the air we've seen the reactivation of Lakshadweep and Andaman/Nicobar, two entities that had fallen off the DX map for decades, and in 2007 we had a pretty good activation of Scarborough Reef. In 2009 Desecheo came back after a very long absence as well.

I still think more has fallen off than has come back on, though...plus DXing in the era of Clublog, always-on clusters, the DXCC Challenge and the CQDX Marathon have made the hobby infinitely more difficult as well and have required bigger and more powerful stations to get through the QRM.

Amen on the cluster QRM'ers.   Right now I'm listening to some lid slow keying a lecture on good practices for courtesy on the V73NS whisper signal on 12M, sigh.  Well, I did get Peter Island which was pretty easy to work, back then I had only a nicely set up vertical. The vertical was not enough for Kure, at least with the skills and time I had then, also I did not really appreciate how long it might be before anyone went back, so I sort of did not persist enough.  Really all I've missed is VK9X, which I thing will come eventually, and Kure. Annobon took a while, Glorioso I consider myself a bit lucky, and otherwise it's gone OK with many hours in the seat.

3  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Card chaser or Award chaser? on: April 07, 2013, 06:10:46 AM
I'm always chasing new band/modes for 160-10 DX; I don't chase counties, and so far I have no passion for digital modes. Although I have 317 confirmed mixed, and confirmed over 150 everywhere except 160, I have not submitted for DXCC. Most likely if/when I make honor roll level, I will submit the cards. Until then I feel like one of the guys in the pack with nothing special to brag about.

I use a West Mountain RigBlaster
5  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: WPX SSB Contest This Weekend on: March 26, 2013, 01:38:34 PM
Well, that ruins a contest I usually enjoy doing; who decided Easter Weekend was a good time for it?  The thing is last weekend there was no significant contest on at all.  This is probably the traditional weekend for this contest, but really...
6  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Easter Island XR0YG on: March 23, 2013, 08:48:36 PM
I keep listening om 160M for them but I don't hear them at all, weird.  I worked TX5K on 160M and thought that there would be some similarity in signal strength for those two places here. I worked XR0YG on all the high bands for fills, but I'd really like to get them on 80 and 160M now.
7  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Butternut HF9V versus Steppir BigIr for saltwater location on: March 10, 2013, 06:42:54 PM
When/If your Steppir breaks down in the Maldives, you will be off the air.  Take the HF-9V

Yeah, so???

People in airline first class get free wine, too.

Isn't there an Israeli ham who makes periodic visits to Nepal?  I have one 20M SSB and two 20M CW q's with 9N7
10  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Earning Honor Roll Using Others Stations on: March 02, 2013, 07:45:16 AM
Once a sizable number of stations subscribe to the remote services, the little guys may be repeatedly competing against the same big gun stations, as guys log in and out and cycle through to work the tough ones. Having been privileged to do CW contests from W2RE, which is being remoted now, I can only say I hope that the newbies who may subscribe to the service keep all that gain on the split frequency and off the DX frequency!!  You really do hear almost everything on those antennas, and you get heard; however I do not agree that necessarily translates into surefire QSOs.  It does make your odds excellent.
11  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: EP3SMH Iran on: February 27, 2013, 07:23:25 PM
I had started one of the other threads on this subject a few days ago after working Iran for an ATNO.  My plan is to try something unusual.  I have in laws in Japan. I am going to send my card, "SAE" and some $$$ to my in laws, have them mail my contents in a letter of Japanese origin and writing to EP3SMH, with the return going to Japan. My guess is the Iranian inspectors may not bother with such a letter.  Will let you know.
12  eHam Forums / DXing / EP3SMH on: February 18, 2013, 09:56:28 AM
EP3SMH was active this morning on 15 meter SSB, and I got lucky for an ATNO. Now the task of trying to QSL starts; wondering if anyone has recent information on success rates for getting a card through and back?  The updated QRZ.COM page says send $9 US plus an IRC, and send it registered. Not that US-Iran realtions have been good at all for many years, but recent sanctions are pushing things more, so my guess is the prospects for succesful QSLing are slim...any recent stories?
13  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Large expedition to Uganda starts Feb. 8th on: February 13, 2013, 07:31:50 PM
I was not able to hear them all that good on 160 meter band. So I decided to make my East Beverage longer . I could not get the ground rod down far enough due to rocky ground so I went about 150 feet further to where the creek has flooded a area and piled top soil up for last 100 years , I would guess. The ground rod taped down easy to 6 feet so I drove it in to 8feet  with the sledge hammer and hooked the Beverage up. I spent half the day clearing the trail and so forth.

At my sun set 5:25pm EST  on the 11th I could hear 5X8C and at around 6:00 PM local time they peaked to about S7. I heard a number of east coast stations work them but I could not at time.Maybe if I would have had a amp.

My Beverage is now 900 plus feet and I never lost their signal all that night . After sitting there for 4 hours their signal peaked to s3 or 5  and I do not think any one could hear them. There seemed to be many periods where no one called. I heard one USA station call and 5X8C sent their call many times trying to work them. The op never went back to them. Later when   I called and worked them it was for a new one on 160 as well as a new zone.

To say I was excited to work a new one on Top Band  puts it mildly.

So now I think I built the super Beverage. But last night they faded out around 7:30 and I really never heard them again. So the night I heard them for about 5 hours was mostly on account of propagation and not a new wonder Beverage .

But after using a short 580 Beverage for 3 years I am pretty sure that this 900 foot Beverage is more quiet and has more narrow receive path. Only months of listening will I get a better idea of performance and not having  a shorter Beverage  to switch to for comparison I will never really know how much better this one is. Just guess work.

Good luck and DXing to All

73 JIM
Great job and nice story!!

Tonight, 2/13/2013 the 5X8C signal was much better on 80 meters, and I was able to work them using my 1/4 wave vertical. It's a HyTower, and I need a tuner to use it at the CW end of the band. That and a KW.
14  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Large expedition to Uganda starts Feb. 8th on: February 12, 2013, 04:46:06 PM
These are great ops and easy to work. My only issue is that here in upstate NY I can't even hear them on 80 meters.  I have decent but not great antennas for 80M. No Beverage or pennant. How many of you in NA are hearing them on 80M?
15  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Where to get IRCs on: February 12, 2013, 03:53:17 PM
The post office sells them directly from its website...
