I know this is a loaded question and really depends on your own personal needs, however I am new to ham radio and would like some input. I received my Technician license in December, and am studying for my code and General license. My radio is an Icom 746. I'm currently using a homemade wire antenna cut for 6 meter operation. It's configured in an inverted V with the apex about 30' in the air. I'm hoping to pass my general within the next few months. I am not ready to invest in a beam and want to keep experimenting with the wire antennas. The problem is I don't yet have the experience to determine if there is one antenna better than any other. The main ones I have been looking at are the G5RV, Alpha Delta DX-CC, Carolina Windom, Barker & Williamson, and Double Bazooka.
The only antenna tuner I have is the one built into the 746. I have read all the reviews on these antennas, but I just get more confused. It looks like they all have their strengths and weeknesses depending on the band.
If you want a great wire antenna which can perform adequately on the maximum number of bands, which one would you pick??
thanks for your input,
