1  eHam Forums / Elmers / MFJ-931 ARTIFICIAL GROUND on: June 25, 2001, 09:55:54 AM
Having used the very same equipment you have, my experience has been this; I had my best sucess with a ground wire as short as possible. And a counterpoise wire as long as possible, in order to work multi-bands.  If all else fails, try unscrewing your PL-259 collar sleeve from the back of the tuner, pull the coax back just a little. So just the tip is in the back of the tuner. This makes your G5RV into an end fed top loaded wire.
If you are still not satisfied, send me an email and I'll tell you what I'm doing with wire now days.
kd4zd@juno.com     Good luck!
2  eHam Forums / Contesting / 6m cq ww? on: May 15, 2001, 08:44:29 AM
Yes, but the problem is; people keep sending CW "CQ" on the SSB Call frequency.  I will not answer them on 50.125 except on SSB.
3  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Motorcycle mobile on: May 05, 2001, 06:29:06 AM
Hi Jim,
Ran motorcycle mobile since 1977, both in Europe & the USA.  Gold Wings don't need any extra electrical enhancements.  Biggest problem I had was being able to hear.  My best solution was a helmet speaker and a "bull horn" mtd on the false tank. My web page address is: http://home.att.net/~usaret.copp/   Enjoy!  73's, Larry.
4  eHam Forums / Elmers / Is 6M alive and well? on: April 19, 2001, 10:43:56 AM
Based on your comment as to; "not wanting to wait to hear signals", I would not buy it.  6M is a wonderful band, but is only active sporadically.  It's like going fishing, do you go to a "pay lake", to insure a large catch, or leave your catch to chance by going to a lake that is not stocked by man, but nature?
I listen on 6M daily, but only hear a signal about once every three months.
5  eHam Forums / Elmers / how to remove RF in Shack with a long wire? on: March 25, 2001, 09:34:33 AM
I am currently running a 250' end fed wire.  My RF was coming in on the speaker wire and the remote cable for the control head of my ICom 706.  I simply wound RF chokes using the extra wire length of same. End of problem. I work all HF bands.
Good Luck.
6  eHam Forums / Elmers / Have you ever blown up an ICOM AH-4? on: December 02, 2000, 05:18:38 PM
I purchased four (4) AH-4's before obtaining one that would operate as advertised.  The first three would not work right out of the box.  Sorry, but I did not try to repair them as they were under warranty.  The one that finally works was purchased last July.
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / Amateur Radio Equipment Insurance on: July 08, 2000, 08:03:39 AM
ALLSTATE REFUSED MY THEFT CLAIM ON AMATEUR GEAR FROM MY AUTO. SAID IT HAD TO BE FACTORY INSTALLED BY THE CAR MFG OR IT WAS NOT COVERED. CAR WAS LOCKED, WINDOW BROKEN OUT AND TRANSCEIVER STOLEN!
8  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Wire antennas in trees on: July 04, 2000, 09:16:36 AM
I like to keep it simple. Using an old sling shot I put fishing line over a 50' tree, then pulled up no. 16 gage wire (covered, green). I now have a 250' long wire over the tops of three trees in a lazy "C" configuration. It's end fed from a SGC "SmartTuner". The up and down sections are 50' each and 150' is horizontal. One end is tied to a lower branch with the fishing line. The other is nailed to the house with plenty of slack. It has been up now four months and doing well. It's invisible unless you know what to look for. I put it up when the neighbor's were at work! I'm Retired Army and moved here sight unseen. Turns out all the residents are related. Make one mad and they gang up on you. They don't like Radio people!
9  eHam Forums / Misc / HAS ANYONE TRIED ELECTRONIC QSL'ing, INSTEAD OF TR on: May 12, 2000, 09:26:42 AM
I have been E-QSLing for about six months with mostly Europe & the USA. Since I don't care about ARRL approval this works fine business for me. In other words, getting the extra photos mean more to me than any ARRL awards would.
And yes there is a 20 foot wall around the ARRL. They have absolutely ignored my letters for twenty years now. Even when I threatened to drop my membership, they still won't respect me enough to reply to anything I write to them about. It's the old saw, it's who you know.......
