1  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Good dual band HT for someone who rarely uses one on: May 17, 2013, 07:28:33 AM
Agree that for less than $50, you can't beat this handheld. I have two.

The only issue was weak audio. Took advice from a user group and drilled out the mic "hole" to about twice it's size. Bingo! Perfect now!!

I wouldn't try this mod from the outside. Take it apart and drill from the inside (or you'll probably nuke the mic). Putting it back together took some gymnastics, though...

My .02

I had a Yaesu speaker mic that had the same problem.  I used a needle heated up with a candle to poke a hole in the plastic.  Didn't have to disassemble or wreck the board.

Just make sure that your antenna can handle the combined TX power output. Other than that you should be good to go.

Keep mine in zip lock bags in a big canvas bag. Keeps them from getting too tangled up.
4  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Hard time choosing between two Mobiles on: April 26, 2013, 09:02:43 AM
I run my 110w mobile at 110w.  If you run amplifiers under what they're rated, you get not-so-nice results in the form of spurs.

Of course, my mobile is a Motorola Syntor X9000.  You can brick the mic for days and it doesn't care.

One of my friends found a nasty birdie on one of the Chinese handhelds (Baofeng UV-5RA).  It made a repeater on 442.000 completely unusable.  The squelch stays open and it squeals with heterodynes.  I've heard of birdies on other frequencies with the other Chinese radios.  Do some research before buying to make sure it's not on top of a popular repeater freq you intend to use.
6  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Kenwood TR2500 (TU 1 Tone Unit) on: April 02, 2013, 07:44:55 PM
My 2500 only has a pot for adjusting the PL tone. There's a hole in the back of the radio you insert a diddle stick. Listen on another radio and adjust until it breaks the repeater squelch.

I'd go for one that takes AA batteries. I have so many handy scratchies with shot batteries that cost more than it's worth to begin with. Especially if you use it very infrequently.

When installing the old-school Andrew connectors on LDF4, I use a small propane torch.  In and out pretty quick.  The new connectors are compression-style, so no heat necessary.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Speaker for hf use on: March 25, 2013, 07:38:13 AM
I  picked up a  lonesome center channel speaker from a surround sound array. The center channel speaker is designed for the narrative voice from movies. From their specs they seemed to be perfect and have proven to be so for HF audio on my FT-950.  It's a Sony and I got it for $8 at a thrift store. I have since seen more of them. Look around.

73,
Russ

One of my friends has this same setup, although he has a Kenwood center channel speaker.  Looks nice on the shelf.  Sounds amazing!  With I had thought of this before buying a Yaesu SP-8...
10  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Looking For A Simple To Operate 2 Meter HT & Mobile Rig. on: March 25, 2013, 07:30:58 AM
Icom IC-2AT.  Doesn't get much simplier that that for an HT.  Look for them at hamfests or on eBay.

CTCSS becomes an issue with this radio, especially when not equipped with the appropriate board.  Changing tones becomes another issue if you do, in fact, have the appropriate board.

And, NO, not into guns at all.  I'm an "animal" person; NOT a "gun" person.  Seems, most of the time, the two are incompatible.
Tom

Hate to hijack the thread, but this statement, while it is the author's opinion, is completely absurd.  Paper and clay target shooting involves no animals whatsoever.  Keeping a gun (and possibly using it) for home defense, on the other hand, involves another type of "animal", but I doubt the author is that kind of "animal person".

A GE M-PA with Hamflash firmware is the easiest radio I've ever used.  Traded a 40w MSF5000 UHF repeater for 2 of these (one VHF and one UHF).  Use them all the time.  Super durable, too.  You can run over it with a car and it will still work just fine.  Case is heavy die-cast metal.

Only problems is batteries.  Pretty expensive, considering you can buy a Chinese handheld and a half for what a replacement battery costs.
13  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: TE Systems Repeater Amp Weak Receive? on: March 14, 2013, 11:54:03 AM
You need to either use a different amp or 2 TR switches.  Think of an amp as a pump with a check valve.  When it's off, the RF won't go back the other way, so you need 2 TR switches to bypass the amplifier when receiving.

it would be awful boring.

I'm getting to the point where I prefer the equipment I maintain to be "awful boring" now.  Seems to be cutting into my motorcycle time.
15  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: TS-430 Display on: March 11, 2013, 08:58:01 AM
When the displays in my Motorola Spectras goes dim, it's almost always capacitor cancer.  Although, IIRC, the 430 has a VFD, which, according to Wikipedia, has a specific life due to falling emission and reduction of phosphor efficiency.

If it's a bad solder joint, you could try a technical tap (or more severe percussive maintenance) to see if it comes back.
