eHam Forums / Elmers / Sequel to fuses blowing on the TS-830S

Greetings to everybody: A couple of weeks ago I posted a message that the fuses were blowing on my TS-830S. What I was unaware of at the time was the fact that the TS-830S was made for Japanese consumption and Japan has a 100volt AC system. I sent my transceiver to a friend to check out. His wall outlet is 230 volts. The step down transformer I was using from the wall to the rig was giving 118 volts. I had been using this transformer for a while. When my friend used his 100 volt transformer ( 230-100) volts the 100 volt transformer gave him 104volts and he has been running it for two days, switching between cw and voice intermittently with no problem. I feel chagrined at not giving the Elmers the complete information. And at the moment I am looking for a 220-100 volt step down transformer or power supply.Any further help is highly appreciated. Yours Truly Richard HS0ZFQ

Thanks for the quick replies. The 830 only blows the 6A 250V fuses on transmit. I never have a problem on receive. I got the fuses from K4EAA who specializes in these hybrids so I figure I am safe on the fuse rating issue. I power the rig with a transformer. The receiver end of the transformer is 130 Volts and the other end goes into the wall 220v. To the new reply I have brand new matched 6146 and a new 12BY7A ?? rectifier that I bought from the US. They are all American NOS tubes. I looked at one just now still in the box and it is a Phillips ECG from RF Parts.com Richard HS0ZFQ

Greetings and Happy New Year to all: I have a TS-830S that was repaired by a friend and I love it. It beats the heck out of my IC-706.Recently it has developed a problem of blowing fuses.I have taken my Palstar antenna analyzer and antenna tuner and run tables on swr and frequencies used so I don't think the problem is there. I am going to go throlugh the antennas and feedlines again. I have two S9 verticals with two BalunDesigns baluns. Could a kind soul give me suggestions as to where to look in the radio system for the problem. After a few minutes of operation the fuse will blow. I do not want to operate the 830 and damage it. Any help will be highly appreciated. Yours Truly Richard Vincent HS0ZFQ ChiangRai, Thailand

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: how to cut phasing and delay lines : a couple of questions

Thank you both N4JTE and WB6BYU for the help in steering me in the right direction. Now all I have to do is find a coax T-Connector in Thailand. I have a Palstar ZM-30 antenna analyzer and have only used it for cutting the length of dipoles in the past, measuring resonant frequencies and SWR. I had never heard of a coax t-connector before. It looks like one end of the T is shorted with a 50 ohm resistor and the other end is for attaching the test coax to so that you can measure, short the end and cut to proper phase angle. Am I on track? Richard HS0ZFQ

Greetings: First of all I would like to give W8JI late and belated thanks for the answers and info he gave me on this topic about a month ago. All that is in a bound book along with an article on Simpfeed. Right now I would like to reference an article N4JTE Antennas Tuesday, July 08, 2008. Beginning on page three of the article he shows how to cut 84 degree and 71 degree lines. Down on line 8 he states " All the 50 ohm coax will be cut to the correct degree length using the MFJ with a Tee connector in parallel with a 50 ohm dummy load " That confuses me because about 9 lines further down he states " So we hook up a 1/4 WL length of coax based on the velocity factor, attach to the MFJ, short out the far end ... At this point I am wondering what happened to the 50 ohm dummy load?? Can I just hook up the coax, short it, read the freq at low swr, and go on from there without using the 50 ohms in parallel. I cannot get this around my head. The rest I understand perfectly. Any help is really appreciated. I am determined to eventually build two phased verticals for 20, spaced 1/4 WL apart and each vertical being 1/4 WL high, just as W8JI suggested in the beginning. eHam Forums / Elmers / computing transmission and feedline phase angles for 2 el phased 20 meter vertic
on: October 29, 2012, 09:03:07 PM
Greetings: I have two S9 verticals with 32 radials each and have been using a lightningbolt quad until the weather zapped it. I want to build a 2 element phased 20 meter vertical. Number one I cannot get the Christman calculator to work, even on Chrome or Firefox. An article by N4JTE " Verticals Got two ? " went through the math of computing phase angles of 84 degrees for the phasing lines and 71 degrees for the feedline. This was for 40 meters. I do not have EZNEC or any antenna files so if a kind soul tell me what phase angles I should use for 14.050 MHZ ( cw ) if I am using a 1/4 wave element set and then another iteration if I am using a 5/8 wave element set I would be sorely indebted to the individual. Also, since I am experimenting can I get away with buying EZNEC 5 or will I need EZNEC 5+ if I decide to continue on the path of phased verticals. Yours Truly: Richard HS0ZFQ ChiangRai, Thailand

eHam Forums / Elmers / I need guying instructions for an S9 43 foot vertical
on: September 24, 2012, 07:47:10 AM
Greetings: I already have an S9 31 foot vertical which is unguyed. I buried a pipe in the ground and had about three feet sticking out and it was then filled with cement. It has been rock solid for two years. The 43 footer is a little taller. I have 1/8 inch kevlar/dacron rope which is UV protected and guying rings from Max Gain Systems. I would like to know at what heights to guy and how far out from the base of the vertical the stakes should be to create a solid footing. I would like to guy at only two heights but if that is not feasible please tell me. Thank You: Richard HS0ZFQ Chiangrai, Thailand

eHam Forums / DXing / Why Do I never hear African stations ?

Greetings: I have been living in Thailand for over eight years and the only African stations I hear once in awhile are ZS stations.i have an IC-706 and have had a quad for 10-15-20 meters and am now using an S9 vertical on 15 and 20, and have worked 47 countries with it in about a month and a half. I am wondering if it is the case that there are very few amateur operators in the sub saharan part of Africa. I operate cw only, so maybe that is a problem. Any advice on this would really help. eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / how to strengthen the spreaders of a lightningbolt hf quad at the spiders
on: June 07, 2012, 09:04:54 PM
My five band, 20-10 meter quad got trashed in the last wind/rainstorm. It had been up about three years and I was using MaxGain 1.025OD spreaders about 12 feet long. MaxGain makes good spreaders. I had the spreaders, three of them snap off at the spiders. On the web I saw a picture of a quad that had pieces of 1' aluminum angle aluminum clamped to the spreaders from the spiders, to reinforce them. Now I am wondering if I could use 2' pieces of aluminum instead as strengtheners instead of 1' pieces, or would this cause my pattern to distort? I don't have EZ-NEC but maybe an Elmer out there knows the answer. Also, is there any kind of truss arrangement that I could use on the quad in addition to the strengthening of the spreaders at the spider points? Yours Truly Richard D. Greetings: This is HS0ZFQ in Chiangrai, Thailand.I have a rather old Bencher BY-1 paddle that has been through the mill, Cats have peed on it an I have cat hairs in the works. I am looking for visual instructions that will show me how to take the key apart and put it back together, after I clean it and repaint it. If anyone knows of a source I would appreciate it. I don't want to forget a part and then go ballistic. Yours Truly Richard D. Vincent HS0ZFQ

Greetings: This is HS0ZFQ in ChiangRai, Thailand.I am in process of installing a 43 footer S9 vertical on my property. The configuration is such that I can not put down 32 radials totally straight. I already have a 31 footer S9 for 20-17-15-12 and 10 with 32 radials 26 feet long and worked 31 countries since 29 April.Since the 43 footer will be used on 40 mostly can I get away with doubling up on some radials in directions that I don't have 26 foot straight run ( 26 feet being .2 wavelength on 40) My quad just got destroyed in a bad storm and I am building some low profile back up antennas. Any answers will be kindly appreciated. Yours Truly Richard Vincent HS0ZFQ

eHam Forums / Elmers / TS-830S blank screen and another problem
on: April 16, 2012, 03:36:41 AM
Good evening from Thailand. I just had a friend go through my TS-830S and put new matched tubes in it. For several days it worked like a Ferrari. I could not believe the receiver's sensitivity and selectivity. The other morning I turned it on to a blank screen. I let it sit until this afternoon and turned it on. I get a display with the frequency but cannot change the frequency. If I change the band to another band and then turn off the rig and turn it back on it will display a frequency on the new band but I cannot change the frequency with my dial. Does anyone have any ideas as to where the problem is located? Yours Truly Richard Vincent HS0ZFQ ChiangRai, Thailand
