I attempted to use the "Ham Radio Deluxe" (HRD) rig control software to control my FT-817ND and here's how things ended up. I don't think that HRD is the culprit here, because many, many people use the software without issue and it has been redesigned to accommodate the 817ND.
Here was the setup:
Dell Inspiron computer running HRD under Vista connected to the "COMPUTER" port of an LDG Z-817 autotuner. The Z-817 connected to the 817ND via the accessory ports of each device.
Initially, the software connected perfectly with the radio and I was able to change bands, freq's, modes, etc with no problem at all. However, I wasn't receiving any signals. I also found that the autotuner could not tune any of the frequencies that I normally use and which the tuner always tuned in the past. There was also a horrendous amount of computer hash. The tuner problem nothwithstanding, I wondered whether the computer noise wasn't actually drowning out signals. I shut down HRD and disconnected the rig from the computer altogether. The signals emerged and the autotuner was able to tune again. HOWEVER, I found that my normal vfo DIAL didn't tune anymore, but the SEL dial controlled everything in all modes, not just FM.
In an effort to correct my problem, I reconnected everything to the computer again in hope that if I brought HRD back on line I would be able to determine if I had done something in fidgeting with the program that had created the mess I was in. (The alert reader will by now have determined that I don't know much about HRD and a few other things as well.) Unfortunately, now HRD could NO LONGER read the 817's frequency (definitely a bad sign), so I had to end that effort.
I disconnected everything and resorted to my copy of VE3AYR's "The Pack-It Reference for the YAESU FT-817", an incredibly good book to use. Well, unfortunately, this time the little book didn't help me except to tell me how to do a system reset which I did. The vfo dial now controls what it's supposed to control and the SEL dial does what it's supposed to do. Almost good news. Now I have NO AUDIO and the S-meter is pegged in every mode except FM, which has no audio either. I've tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting then doing a reset with no success. I am out of ideas.
Has anyone ever experienced a similar problem?
Can anyone give me some advice or pointers before I ship the little rig off to Yaesu?
All help will be gratefully accepted.
