3  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / MOBILE OPERATOR WORKING ON 5 BAND WAS SEEKING SKED on: January 01, 2002, 05:08:52 AM
As I described in an earlier post, I have made great progress in the past 8 weeks toward what may turn out to be  a "first" in Ham Radio:  5 Band WAS as a mobile operator, with all award contacts being made less than 50 miles from my home QTH in Springfield, Pa,  all CW at 100 watts output into a High Sierra HS 1500 Screwdriver.  (Please see my earlier post for more details)

As of  12/31/01, I have QSOed 88 percent of the needed state/band QSOs (220 out of 250), in just 8 weeks.

But its getting harder to work "New Ones" as I progress.  So I am going to list the states I still need on each band.  IF YOU ARE IN ANY OF THESE STATES, AND ARE ACTIVE ON HF CW, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE AN E MAIL FROM YOU REGARDING A SKED.  I QSL WITH AN SASE TO ALL NEEDED CONTACTS.

NEEDED STATES BY BAND - N8LXR/M
                   SPRINGFIELD, PA

80 METERS:  AK, HI, IA, KY, LA, MT, NE, NV, OK,
            RI, UT, VT, WY

40 METERS:  HI, MT,

20 METERS:  NV

15 METERS:  AK, GA, HI, MA, MS, ND, RI, SC, UT,
            VT, WY

10 METER:   AK, RI, SC

I can accommodate a variety of sked times and will work around your schedule.

So far as I know, should I complete 5 Band WAS as a mobile operator, this will mark the first time that a mobile station has achieved the award, and your station may be part of a unique happening in the arena of HF Awards.

73 to all and health and prosperity in 2002!

Just read the other posts....and Yes, the propagation mechanism for close in contacts in ur bubble will often be some sort of backscatter...these signals have a fluttery, hollow, ringing quality, and are most easily worked using CW.

I am working on 5 Band WAS as a mobile operator (see my post in the "Mobile Ham" forum) and during the ARRL Ten Meter Contest, I worked 45 states in all, several in close in what you describe as "a bubble."

The trick, I believe, in working the states that are close in to your QTH is to copy WEAK signals (at least on 10 meters, on that band, states that are within say 300 miles of you will often be VERY weak, unless their is some kind of E Layer Skip, in which case they may be VERY strong) using CW, and a good 500 HZ filter.  DSP filtering is also a good idea.

The Antenna on my truck is a High Sierra HS 1500 Screwdriver.  Its pattern resembles a fat balloon
around the antenna showing some high angle lobes..the vertical you are using almost certainly radiates a greater percentage of your RF at low angles..great for working DX...not too great for close in contacts.

I would recommend simply trying to put up a low horizontal dipole....such an antenna radiates practically straight up, at very high angles, just what you need to bag those close in contacts in your "bubble."

I am in PA...if you need PA for your WAS, I would be happy to have a sked with you...let me know.

73 and Happy New Year!

6  eHam Forums / Misc / 5 BAND WAS....AS A MOBILE OPERATOR! HAS ANYONE EV on: December 26, 2001, 11:16:17 AM
I am currently working on 5 Band WAS as a mobile operator, with all contacts being made within 50 miles from my home QTH as per WAS Rules.

I am wondering if anyone has ever done a "Mobile WAS" before.  The ARRL does not officially recognize "WAS MOBILE," and I am trying to find out if this will be a first in Amateur Radio, if I am ultimately successful.

I have about 80 percent of the needed QSOs and am making quick progress.

Please see my post in the "Mobile Ham" Forum for more details of my adventures with this unusual form of
WAS hunting.

7  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HAS ANYONE EVER DONE A 5 BAND WAS AS A MOBILE OPER on: December 26, 2001, 01:31:11 AM
This is Tim, N8LXR, in Springfield, PA.

In the past 8 weeks, I have made great progress toward achieving what I believe may be a First in Amateur Radio:  5 Band Worked All States as a mobile operator, consistent with WAS rules stating that all contacts must be made no further than 50 miles apart to count toward the award.

Has anyone ever done this before?  Or do you know anyone who has?  The ARRL does not recognize "Mobile WAS" officially, so I have no way of knowing aside from asking other hams.

Most of the contacts I have made were done while operating on a high hill just outside my condo complex in Springfield, (Delaware County) Pa, the rest from a great spot along the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pa, where I have a second home, about 10 miles NE of Springfield.  All contacts were made using CW at 100 Watts output to a High Sierra HS 1500 Screwdriver Antenna, Rig is a Yaesu FT 100D.

How am I doing?   Here is my band/state count as of 12/26/01:

ALL CONTACTS FROM EITHER SPRINGFIED OR
PHILADELPHIA, PA, ALL MOBILE, ALL CW

80 METERS = 36 STATES (INCLUDING CA, WA, AZ, NM, MS)
40 METERS = 45 STATES (INCLUDING ALASKA)
20 METERS = 47 STATES (INCLUDING HAWAII AND ALASKA)
15 METERS = 33 STATES (SEVERAL RARE: DE, ID, MT)
10 METERS = 45 STATES (HAWAII, DE, MS)

Most of these have been made in just the last 8 weeks as of 12/26/01.

I am planning a series of skeds with stations in Hawaii and Alaska for 80 and 40 meters. I am also very much in need of QSOs with Rhode Island, which has proven more elusive than either KL7 or KH6!   If you are in Alaska, Hawaii, or Rhode Island, are active on HF CW and willing to have a sked, please E Mail me at:
MORSENUT@AOL.COM.

Again, if you or anyone you know has ever done a Five Band WAS as a mobile consistent with WAS Rules, please let me know.

Working for this award has been a lot of fun...many thanks to the many operators who have been willing to sked and "Band Hop" with me!

73 to all and a Happy New Year!
