eHam Forums / QRP / RE: WHEN IS QRP NOT QRP?
|
on: April 19, 2013, 09:52:23 AM

Pretty much all contests and awards I've looked into define how many watts qualifies as QRP. I never assume how many watts QRP qualifies as, since the broad definition is completely up for interpretation.
Personally, I only own a Icom IC-735, so when I had some repairs done and an alignment completed, I requested that the low power level be set at 5 watts instead of the spec. of 10 watts. For events like Field Day, this will allow me to operate 1B Battery (though I think it's kinda silly to mandate a power level AND restrict the power source to something other than mains or a motor-driven generator).

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Tower freight rates
|
on: April 12, 2013, 04:13:24 PM

Find a different tower company. Most of these companies also manufacture towers for the commercial sector, and those guys usually arrange their own shipping. Most tower companies shouldn't have any issues with a 3rd party pickup. Like Clint suggested, this would be an LTL shipment. Hopefully, at least the tower company would load the tower onto a flatbed or into a container for shipping and then you would be responsible for unloading it from the truck. That would save money on shipping since the trucking company wouldn't have to use a crane or detachable forklift to remove the tower. Thank you for the input but the tower companies are the people that I am avoiding since what they charge for shipping is frequently marked up 2 -3 times actual freight charges or cost.

eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Charging Yaesu FT-60R HT

I haven't checked a schematic to be absolutely certain, but I was told that the FT-60R will automatically limit charging of the battery once it is full. I took the AC adapter and used the cable to connect it directly to my 12v power supply (and just leave it connected) and have had no charging issues and have the same performance since the day I bought it 7 years ago.

eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Alaska "Emergency Frequency" / Fixed Service
|
on: March 29, 2013, 08:11:33 AM

Here's the info, I posted the Part 97 info here too for others that might be interested. Title 47, Part 97 - Direct Link§ 97.401 Operation during a disaster.
A station in, or within 92.6 km (50 nautical miles) of, Alaska may transmit emissions J3E and R3E on the channel at 5.1675 MHz (assigned frequency 5.1689 MHz) for emergency communications. The channel must be shared with stations licensed in the Alaska-Private Fixed Service. The transmitter power must not exceed 150 W PEP. A station in, or within 92.6 km of, Alaska may transmit communications for tests and training drills necessary to ensure the establishment, operation, and maintenance of emergency communication systems.
[71 FR 66465, Nov. 15, 2006] Outside Part 97: Title 47, Part 90 - Direct Link§ 90.253 Use of frequency 5167.5 kHz.
The frequency 5167.5 kHz may be used by any station authorized under this part to communicate with any other station in the State of Alaska for emergency communications. The maximum power permitted is 150 watts peak envelope power (PEP). All stations operating on this frequency must be located in or within 50 nautical miles (92.6 km) of the State of Alaska. This frequency may also be used by stations authorized in the Alaska-private fixed service for calling and listening, but only for establishing communication before switching to another frequency.

eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Any homeopaths in the house?

I completely agree with N3DF. I knew of a store specializing in homeopathic remedies that was less than 0.25 miles from a 1 KW AM broadcast station and had no concerns about the effectiveness of their products.

Has anyone figured out how to use a couple laptops with WiFi adapters and send video and audio direct, no internet or Routers involved?
Ken N1KK
Hi Ken, What you want to do is set up the wifi adapters in Ad-hoc mode. This will allow them to talk to each other without going through an access point/router.

eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Tapatalk?
|
on: February 19, 2013, 09:31:33 AM

Can you find me an article on this? I use several large sized forums with tapatalk already and was having a bit of an issue finding something via quick google search that indicated it gets "full access". It might, but I'd just like to read where this is specified. Only thing I was able to find is that most of the security flaws listed out there on sites, are ones that are out of date now and Tapatalk has since fixed, so looks like they tend to be fairly on top of things.
I've never come across any articles on this, but then again I don't administrate any forums either. Just reporting what other forum administrators have said when asked to implement Tapatalk. Even if Tapatalk has bulletproof security, having a single point of failure is still a bad idea.

Some other forums I use on a regular basis have specifically ruled out Tapatalk since you have to give them unrestricted access to your user database. What this means is that if Tapatalk is ever compromised, every forum that uses that service will be compromised until the forum administrator removes Tapatalk (or Tapatalk fixes their issue). Most forum administrators would rather not worry about relying on some other system's security...

eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: clubs near me
|
on: February 12, 2013, 08:11:41 PM
|
Hi Jamie, Probably the easiest way to locate local clubs is to use the locator tool on the ARRL website at http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club. Try to find a few that interest you and then attempt to find out if they have newcomer meetings that you can check out. I found that most groups aren't too concerned about someone signing up right away if they're checking out a few different groups. Also, I would suggest seeing if they have an online newsletter or email list that you can check out to see what types of events they did in the last year to see what might interest you. Good luck! 73, Chris - KU7PDX

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Isn't this illegal???

According to a website I just viewed ( http://www.catastrophenetwork.org/?p=1027#comment-8562) - they claim to have "developed" a "Standardized Coded Matrix for Prepper Communications". Now as I read the FCC Rules - it states: Sec. 97.113 Prohibited transmissions. (a) No amateur station shall transmit: (4) ... messages in codes or ciphers intended to obscure the meaning thereof, except as otherwise provided herein; .... But these guys have made available their "Secret" code matrix for PDF download on their website. I posted a reply to their article on their page quoting the above FCC Rules but it is "Awaiting Moderation". Any thoughts from you guys??? 73 de W8BNL - Tom No reason why this wouldn't be allowed. They've developed and published a phone communications protocol that the public has access to. The document even states "©2012 Catastrophe Network, Please Distribute Freely." Nothing secret, and since it isn't secret, it doesn't obscure any meaning.

Technically you don't broadcast over the internet either, it's a stream of data. Most podcasters just refer to this as a live stream.

eHam Forums / QRP / RE: Do you own a Solar Panel for QRP or Prepping?
|
on: December 06, 2012, 09:24:46 AM
|
My input to this thread is that for portable solar power operation, a charge controller is superfluous. You're either operating with deployed panels and using up all the power, or the stuff is packed away. If you've got power to burn while operating, you're carrying too much panel around. A small amount of capacity overhead can be good though, so if on occasion it's a bit too much it's a simple matter to tilt the panel to reduce output. Because you don't operate at night? For those looking for an awesome, customizable solar charge controller, with no RFI, check out the CirKits SCC3 ( http://www.cirkits.com/scc3/). I love that I can fine-tune the charging voltage for a wide range of battery types.
