61  eHam Forums / Elmers / Noise on 40 & 80m on: November 14, 2009, 02:17:10 PM
Wes,

Welcome to HF on the low Bands, very noisy !  As Tom said sooooo well ,verticals
are pretty bad for noise. My mobile on 60 meters has S6 of static most nights. You
might play with the RF gain and adjust it on a week signal for noise reduction while
still coping well enough. Also ( Clear Speech ) makes a DSP unit that does a nice job
of filtering . Guess by the time you do all of that, the dipole might make better sense.
Remember that on 40 meters, 45 feet up is marginal for performance with a Dipole.
You just can’t have your cake and eat it too with most antennas !

Good Luck !

64  eHam Forums / Elmers / 2M home brew mag mount problems on: August 22, 2009, 03:21:05 PM
May be I am not getting this right , but most CB fiberglass whips are helical
wound and have inductance. This may be the problem, for you don’t need it for
2 meters. I was helping a Ham with the same problem on 6 meters / CB whip.
About 3: 1 match with his cut down helical whip.

good luck !
65  eHam Forums / Elmers / home brew "tune" for whip antenna on: August 04, 2009, 06:23:06 PM
The last few post nailed what you need to know about your mobile whip install.

No one mention the shape of the vehicle or where it is mounted can change the
swr / impedance. The antenna want to see a image plane or ground plane that
looks like a funnel right under the whip. I have not seen a car that looks like this
so don’t worry about the 1.5 :1 Concentrate on a good ground connection and
location to mount the whip. On a trailer hitch or side of a van is not a good place
to put it. Not practical , but on top / center will give you the best results and less
ground loss. Don’t drink the cool-aid and cut the coax to lower the swr. Your meter
is not seeing the true reading and only fooling you into thinking its better. I
have over the years not seen better than 1.3 to 1 without a matching device on a
CB whip. I have a shunt coil on mine for a Hamstix ( 20 meters ) and when I put the
10 meter ( cut down CB whip ) in its place the reading was almost flat. Lucky ! !

Experiment and have fun learning from trial and error on this one. Good Luck !

66  eHam Forums / Elmers / Tower rivets on: August 03, 2009, 06:23:32 PM
Bryan,

I am certain they use sodium hydroxide (acid ) to strip the tower and etched away
your rivets. Becareful , a bum shop like this one may have not deoxidized it either. This
means the acid is still active and if you coat it , the etching continues ! I never liked  the
powdercoat jobs I have had in the past. Seems they cheeze out on the prep every
time !
Best of luck ,

67  eHam Forums / Elmers / TS 480 and DSP Speaker on: August 02, 2009, 03:50:00 PM
The DSP in the Kenwood does ok on cw , but does nothing for me on SSB.
For me no filter works best however if the situation calls for a filter you cant
go wrong with this one. The reason the price jumped is they know what they
have. I have only ran it thru my Yamaha book speaker and it does improve
copy. If you have never used DSP before you could be disappointed because
no DSP cleans up the garbage 100 % .If you buy one and still have good hearing
you will find the built in speaker is crap. Buy one off e-bay and you will be more
happy .

Cheers

Bob,

West Mountain Clear Speaker is very impressive as far as DSP goes. No filter is better than any, but I have
used it on the HR 2510( crummy rig ) and the TS 480 with pleasant results. I listened to the speaker it came
with and within 5 minutes gutted the filter for a better one. A rat-shack CB speaker is better, but the filter is
wonderful. When I bought one, it was $125.00 years ago.

Good Luck,

What I have heard, 10 - 12 hours with the filaments lit and the plate caps lifted off the tubes.
71  eHam Forums / Elmers / 2M half wave mobile suggestions? on: June 18, 2009, 12:35:16 AM
If you have the heart to do it, just bend over half the stinger as need to make it shorter.
It will still work quite well, just look like it hit a lamp post. No need to spend more on a
new antenna.
72  eHam Forums / Elmers / How to straighten 4 gauge solid copper wire? on: June 15, 2009, 04:36:59 PM
You didn’t mention how long the wire is or if you have extra to cut off ? I have straighten lots of wire over the years and
here is how you do it. Chuck one end of the wire in a powerful hand drill @ low RPM. Clamp the other end in a bench vise.
Now with caution, pull or stretch the wire as tight as you can and turn the drill on so you put some twists in the wire. Let off
the tension and check how straight it is. Repeat till you are satisfied. The turns will make it a little stiffer, but still very workable. Copper is a soft malleable material, which can fatigue and break. Don’t worry about it getting to hard !

Good Luck !
73  eHam Forums / Elmers / CQ - Correctly Answering CQ? on: June 13, 2009, 05:54:04 PM
Its is pretty clear to most how to call CQ, but I think you are miss the whole point here. This has nothing < to do with
being ignorant or uninformed. It has everything to do with how you were raised and the values your parents passed on to
you. I just love the simplistic answers like ( tell them the right way and Baamm ! ) they are now fixed. Just how does
someone fix 30 or 70 years of being rude to others ? Life is short, so try not to let a small group of people get to you on
and off the air. While this is good info for the Lid's to read, they most likely wont.

My peeve is when I ask ( is the freq. in use ? )  3 or more times and call CQ, the Lid call you a @#$%^^&&* for not asking.
Guys…………………if you hear buck-shot @ S-9 they say something so I know you are there please.

All Fun for me

75  eHam Forums / Elmers / mobile antennas on: May 19, 2009, 04:14:33 PM
Sure !

Many hams use a A99 on 10 thru 80 meters. So I am told.

No   Don't go that route ! Buy a Larsen 5/8 wave 2 meter

Mag /mount. You will not regret it !   Save the CB antenna

For 10 meters.
