2  eHam Forums / Elmers / ICOM IC-706MK2G Heat Problem ?? on: September 19, 2004, 10:20:36 AM
Hi Ralph,
My gets almost too hot to touch at times but so far it works fine and hasn't had any problems for over 2 years.
In contrast, my MKII runs almost cold but evidently it isn't a problem as I've read about fan mods but I've also read where people just live with it and all is fine.  I guess I'm in the latter group.
Hope this helps.

4  eHam Forums / Elmers / Rohn 20G Information and Antenna Loading?? on: May 09, 2004, 11:59:37 PM
I've got a 100' Rohn 20 tower with at least that much antenna loading, if not more.  It's guyed at 30, 60, 90 feet.  Been up for over 10 years.
A friend and I take down towers in this area and most are Rohn 20.  Most are guyed 50 foot and higher...some are unguyed at 40 to 50 feet with house brackets at the 10 to 15 foot mark.
I prefer Rohn 25 and 45 towers but a Rohn 20 tower will handle that area as long as you guy it. Ideally, if you put it up against your house, a bracket at 10 ft. and a top guy at 30 ft. should be all you need. When it doubt,    "over-guy" it.  Go for it!

5  eHam Forums / Elmers / Fan in Icom 706MKIIG on: March 28, 2004, 12:01:25 AM
Oh yeah it gets hot!
I've had a few 706MKII's and they were as cold as ice on receive but not my G model.
It has a fan but I only hear it during transmit.
I think the bloody thing should run full time.
Icom says nothing is wrong...sure.

6  eHam Forums / Misc / How Many Hams on Your Street? on: March 03, 2004, 01:26:54 AM
Eight hams on one street!!!
My son and I are the only active hams out of a total of four in this county!!
Lonely but it is kinda nice during a VHF contest.

You can't go wrong with this radio. Especially since the price is dropping down to +/- $  850.00 !!
I just bought my second G model a month ago, and I couldn't be happier. We have two Mk. II's in sons' vehicles and none have had any shoptime, knock on wood.
I had a FT-100D and I really liked running it mobile.
It had some QC issues in which I had to send it back to Cerritos twice. (I sold it before the warranty ran out.)
I'm not saying the 706 is the best radio in it's class, but I've had a Yaesu and an Alinco and they frankly don't hold up well compared to the 706's in my experience. (And I'm willing to try any radio to find one better.) Just my opinion.
