eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: NMO Mount in the Roof of Honda CRV

Thanks, I think I will at least investigate doing the same. I have read about a few who have been able to replace the factory antenna on 2010s and 2011s in much the same manner, which is just aft of my target area. Is there a reason that you placed it "right of center"? Is there a rib there? I have always put an antenna or two on my vehicles within days of delivery; perhaps with a little care, that can continue. No fear of holes here! (Airbags are a different story!).

Yes, I have doen the same on my Ford F-150. Unfortunately, I will have to go back a bit further on this vehicle. The dome light is just behind the sun roof, prohibiting that location in this case.

Has anyone had experience in placing an NMO mount in the roof of a 2011 Honda CRV? My wife (also a ham) is pretty close to purchasing one, and wants a new radio to go with it. Will be mounting a Larsen 2/70 upon arrival.
Thanks,

eHam Forums / Elmers / do ham radios have a ring type feature?

Some of the earlier Kenwoods had this feature. I have a TM-241A that will keep the unit squelched until a stored DTMF code is received. Required an optional DTU-2 card for this feature, as I recall. I am not familiar with any recent vintage amateur radio that performs this function (doesn't mean there aren't any), but a lot of commercial radios that operate on the amateur frequencies have similar features.

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / MAXON SM-4150 as 2 meter VHF mobile

It depends on the band-split that you have.
The M model (M: 153 193 331I, 150-165MHZ) will do 2 meter just fine, (I have four of them in 2 meter service). But as already posted, an RX alignment may be necessary for best sensitivity.
The H model (H: 153 193 492I, 160-174 MHZ) will not do 2 meter without modification.
Hope this helps!

Sure there is! Besides the mention of MARS (there are MARS repeaters in my state!), I have in the past modified some of my older HF transceivers for WARC bands and 60 meters (yes they meet the spectral requirements), my newer HF for my homebuilt 220 and 900 transverters, and a VHF FM rig for FM on another homebuilt 220 transverter. I have also used modified transceivers with attenuators for testing filters and other circuits into a non radiating load. These are all legitimate amateur radio uses for modified transceivers.

6 & 10 may be a challenge, but they are not dead.
With my Ft-8900, I use the Larsen NMO 2/70BK, NMO50BK, and a 1/4 10M ball mount whip on my 2005 F-150. I have great 2 meter and 70 CM coverage, fun with the 6 meter openings, and even work a few 10M FM contacts once in a while. Use good NMO mounts (I use Larsen) in the roof and you won't be disappointed. Two diplexers are needed, but we are not talking weak signal work with FM. Many will tell you that 6M is not worth it at this point in the cycle, but I have a lot of fun in the openings with this simple setup. Monitor 52.525. You will be surprised at the openings in season! I will also second an all mode transceiver; I have an FT-857D in the truck as well, using a Hi-Q for HF and a homemade loop for VHF. However, I enjoy having a separate FM transceiver due to the increased functionality (memories, scanning, dual receive, x-band, etc.) The all mode transceivers serve a different, but no less important purpose for me.

WB2WIK/6,
Please cite the case with proper references. I cannot find any case that agrees with your post. Maybe I am just not looking in the right location.
