eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / hexbeam or quad

I'm about to turn 65 yrs of age and that means climbing towers, cranking towers etc for antenna maintenance is over. I probably have 1 good antenna replacement session left in me, so the steppir 3 element that needs work has got to go. I'm not much for dxcc awards etc, just casual qso. reliability is paramount. hexbeam, quad or ?

eHam Forums / Computers And Software / digipan help
|

i am attempting to use digipan on a alienware m17 running win7 pro. the problem is when i click the 'x' to exit the program, everything appears to terminate normally. however, when i attempt to start digipan again, it can not open the com port, so i ctr alt delete, look at the processes running and digipan *32 is still there. right click, select terminate process does not end the process, the only way to clear digipan from the process table is to reboot:-( my user account has administrator privileges.
any ideas??
tnx

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / velocity factor antenna??

given that the length of a half wave dipole is calculated by 468 / freq in mhz when velocity factor is 1, ie 468 / 1.9 is about 246 ft.
i'm sitting here wondering why folks with small city lots don't use (468 / freq in mhz) * velocity factor, to construct a much shorter antnenna, particularly on 80m & 160m?
as an example, rg59 coax typically has a velocity factor of .66, so plugging to the formula, 468 / 1.9 is about 246 ft, * .66 is about 162 ft.
why couldn't 162 ft of rg59 be cut in two, attached to a 50 ohm, have the remaining ends of the rg59 shorted together, and hoisted into the air?
so what am i missing? there are no free lunches:-)

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Antenna Question

hi there
i've got a dipole that is 200 ft end to end and fed with 450 window line. i attached a palstar zm30 via its vendor supplied 4:1 balanced transformer and then scanned the antenna from 1 - 10 mhz. i do not see a "V" trace at (468/200 is about 2.3 mhz) where i think the antenna should be resonant. it my thinking off or what?

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / balanced tuner help

don't know if this is the right forum but what the heck. i have always wanted to build a step motor driven balanced tuner. i have acquired an excellent tx air capacitor and 2 matched 28 uh roller inductors. next step is to acquire 2 step motors with some kind of positioning indicator, either optical or a pot.
anyone have any recommendations for a company site, or for anything else related, pulleys, belts, encoders etc
