The version I choose to tell: In the early days, commercial radio ops had a rather condescending view of amateurs. Specifically, they thought all amateurs were ham-fisted when operating the CW key. So amateurs were called "hams" by the pros.
We're still around. Professional brass pounders are "Hiss-toe-ree". So I guess we get the last laugh.

I was recently given some test equipment from the 40s. Choice oak boxes with useless equipment inside. There were some ancient batteries in there. Burgess 5156 with black and white stripes, other old wheezers. I can't imagine they are worth anything, but possibly a boat anchor collector might want them for display purposes. You're all packrats, you know what I mean. If you want them, e-mail me at kd5kfl@hotmail.com

I put my HF vertical on a hatch. You can buy a replacement metal hatch lid for 14$. Put an Outbacker or other multiband vertical on it. That way you don't have to hack up the motorhome to put on antennas. Right in the middle of the roof, it has a good ground plane.

Cruiser: Help us out here.
Are you based in the US?
In what country are you licensed for this private channel?
Who makes Sailor brand radios?
When I searched for Sailor RT 2048, I found listings for hundreds of commercial boats using these radios. Apparently very popular on seagoing vessels.

I'm trying to renew my license using CORES. It expired April 28.
I can log in to CORES. When I tell it I want to renew my license it comes back with "No rows returned". Apparently it doesn't know I need to renew?
When I search for KD5KFL it comes back with accurate info, including the fact that my license expired April 28.
What do I have to do to get CORES to read the FCCs own database correctly?

eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Don't rad this. You'll be sorry! 50 R-390s...

I work on a military base. I do high explosive testing. This is fun.
Today I walked into a structure that will be tested very soon. Instant bummer - there's an R-390 in a rack in the structure.
Looking around, I found that it is, in fact, one of 50 R-390s in the structure.
Lowest serial numbers: 32, and TAD-2
All fully populated with tubes.
10 have flaps over the frequency readout. I never saw that until today.
6 have geared counters on the BFO pitch knob.
Every blinkin' one is missing both meters.
I told you you'd be sorry if you read this, right?

Have you tried Lou Franklin at www.cbcintl.com? He is an Amateur Extra with a GROL who writes books about CB repairs and mods. I am an Amateur Extra with a GROL and I have learned from his "CB for dummies" book, "The Screwdriver Experts Guide To CB Radio Repair". Download the catalog and look in the back for the Expander 160, Expander 240 and Super Expo.

eHam Forums / Misc / Rotatable Dipole Antenna

I've thought of making a cheap rotatable dipole this way:
Get two fiberglass dipoles. Firesticks, perhaps.
Make a mount with two metal blocks, insulated from each other & tapped 3/8-24, back to back. Feed one from the center conductor and one from the shield.
When not in use at the fixed QTH they would be available for use on the van and the motorhome.
Never actually tried this.
