46  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: PEP readings on Swan WM-3000 on: November 16, 2012, 07:01:12 AM
Thanks guys,

I'll leave it as is. I appreciate the information.

47  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: PEP readings on Swan WM-3000 on: November 16, 2012, 05:14:29 AM
If I key the radio for 100 watts in FSK, regardless whether the meter is in RMS or PEP mode, it shows roughly the same amount, close to 100W mark.

If I modulate in SSB it shows about 80W on the Swan. If I switch it to RMS mode it only shows around 20-30W so I know the PEP circuit is working.

I guess what I am wondering is this, if the meter shows 100W in PEP mode on a carrier, should it not show 100W PEP on SSB? I may have to try another microphone and see if there is a difference. The radio also has the balanced modulator tap so I tried the mic through my preamp that way and it gave the same PEP readings on SSB. So before I dabble inside, which I don't want to do, I will try another microphone.

Look at mic station on QRZ, you can understand why I don't want to touch the radio, too much work to get at it!!

But I do wonder if it has an IF unit from an earlier model. It also suffers from the S-meter slam on power down, that supposedly was fixed in this range of units.

Recently picked up a Swan WM-3000 PEP meter. If I set the TS940 for 100watts output, the meter on the radio agrees with digital readout on my 993B tuner. The PEP reading on the Swan agrees, if I send a carrier, however when speaking into the mic, the PEP output only shows about 80watts. Could this be due to the characteristics of the mic or is there something out of adjustment in the Swan?
51  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Replacing my TS-830, Need some help. on: September 13, 2012, 09:31:03 AM
Having owned all three, I have to agree neither the 850 or the 920 is a major jump other than the 920 having six meters. The 850 is a great radio, owned 5 of them. Amazing receiver, great TX audio, but getting harder to service. The later models with the upgraded DDS chips, as you mentioned is a bonus. I'd love to get my hands on a late model mint 850.

The 920 is nice, had two of them, but grew tired of it quickly. For about $1K, you can get a used 756PRO, which is a bigger step up, with lots more features than the 850 or 920. I traded mine a few months ago for a nice TS940, SP940 and cash. Guess I'll always be a Kenwood guy.

Good luck and have fun with your new radio, whatever it may be.

If your install is on a main road have two magnetic signs for the doors of you pick up resembling the cable company logo made.

Seriously??

I think I'd find another hobby if my level of desperation got that bad.

54  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Trying to identify new interference on: August 19, 2010, 06:05:03 PM
I have shot a video but not sure how to get it on the net for you guys to listen and view. Basically it is a very broadband S9+ signal that covers from about 11 MHz right up through 10 meters. My guess is an arcing power line pole, I don't think it is a plasma TV as it is not constant. It comes and goes lasting a few minutes. Sometimes you can hear it building up, other times it quickly appears and drops off just as quick. Before I contact the utility company I'd like a second opinion. If anyone is interested in seeing the video, email me, my callsign at yahoo.ca

I have killed the power to everything in my home so I know it is not being generated from my side.

The video is about 8 meg in size. I tried uploading to YouTube, but it will not send me the verification email like it says it is.

Update:

The interference has been traced to a streetlight pole on the corner of my street. Using my portable receiver tuned to 20m, the interference peaks as the light goes out. As the light recharges, the interference gains until the light comes back on the interference stops. The light is cycling on and off more than twice per minute so I think it is tripping the breaker.

I spend quite a bit of time on RTTY during the contests and the best radios I have used were the TS850S and currently the 756PRO. Both will run full power for hours on end and not break a sweat.

Possibly a dirty balance pot?  My balance works very gradual as you sweep clockwise. Try spraying it with some contact cleaner.

I have to agree with the poster. Not his position to send the other call. There is a certain satisfaction about working the DX station, not having another station work it for you.

My favorite color is blue

And sarcasm will get you nowhere. If you had read the reviews for Radiomart first, I am sure you would have bought elsewhere. Good luck with your purchase.

Check out Digital Voice Keyer

http://www.hotamateurprograms.com/downloads.htm

I have used it for a number of years. You will need a mic into your soundcard to record your messages, but once that is set up you simply click on the message you want and the software will either key your radio or use VOX to send the message. Will also record and play back audio from the radio.

Email me if you have any questions.
