"Their instructions were received mainly through a special agents' radio. Their reports were transmitted to the intelligence via satellite. They also used an Internet video portal for hidden messages."

Maybe the numbers stas on hf to get instructions, and since they mention satcom it may be to the rooski polar orbit birds in a store and forward mode (my bet) or a geostationary, all running some form of encrypted burst mode as upload.

No wonder our country is falling apart at the seams. Our country is now full of paranoids.

Yeah, paranoids that monitor every phone call and email, paranoids that use face scanning cameras/software in certain cities, etc technologies paranoids can use to monitor or control others. These professional paranoids spy on everything regardless of what the US constitution says about warrantless searches and seizures.

5  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Is a low pass filter necessary? on: August 20, 2012, 12:48:24 PM
If you live in a metro area with several megawatt tv and fm stas nearby a low pass may help keep all those gigawatts out of your hf rig. I lived in Omaha in los of the tower farm at 72nd and Maple and the rf coming off all them antennas would peg my fs meter attached to a 75ft sloper. Should have tried to rectify it and charge batteries.

7  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: NB and NR Performance Comparisons? on: August 17, 2012, 09:15:11 PM
I have yet to hear dsp nr that did more than reduce the apparent recovered audio (the audio highs usualy) by x amount, meaning that nr is still not quite there yet to me. Dsp filtration on the other hand is wonderfull. No group delay, perfect (or close to it) symmetry from slope to slope, very good stop band attenuation. In my mind dsp modulation and demodulation as well as filtration is where dsp is best used.

I have used two sdr rigs and they have the most clean audio I have had yet from a ham rig, not to say all sdr are outstanding in audio clarity just that these two in particular are worthy, clean local oscillators also help. They revealed to me that there are many hams out there with crummy signals full of rf or fming or too much mic gain or whatever. When you compare sdr rigs to analog it may help to be selective of the signals you wish to compare by.

Who is running around like a chicken? All we are saying (is give peace a chance lol) is there are mean men in control of very nasty weapons who would probably nook us if they could get away with it. I am surprised NK and Iran and the rest don't just buy their nooks from Russia or China ... or Pakistan. Probably save a lot of money that way rather than trying to roll their own and they could more easily avoid war brought on by their insistance on building their own. Who knows, mebbe they have?

10  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Which Icom 756 Series to Choose ? on: August 17, 2012, 02:24:37 PM
Hi
If possible I would forgo the pro series and get a 7600. The pros are nice and all but the 7600 is a more inexpensive and more recent culmination of what Icom has learned about dsp rigs and pretty much blows the pros away. The pros are fine rigs - don't get me wrong, I have one but the degree of difference betwixt them is pretty small (a few dB more sensitive or better dynamic range here and there), especially if you don't employ a preamp on hf - the ii and iii are a bit more sensitive sans preamp on hf. Apparently a lot of ops thought the pro original model wasn't sensitive enough so they always had a preamp enabled, wich may kill dynamic range in storng signal environments. In such a case the original pro does just fine. The original pro also seems to have some common flaws such as caps going bad in the nb circuit as well as poor decoupling of the nb circuit power bus causing imd, both of wich can be remedied fairly cheaply.

Some food for thought:

Can you staple/tape/glue/jimmy a wire loop around the roof under the eaves? Feed it with white cabletv coax.

"Just a reminder that there are no immediate credible nuclear threats against the US presently"

Oh really?

"In 2001 I, as the President of the Russian Federation and the supreme commander, deemed it advantageous to withdraw the radio-electronic center Lourdes from Cuba. In exchange for this, George Bush, the then U.S. president, has assured me that this decision would become the final confirmation that the Cold War was over and both of our states, getting rid of the relics of the Cold War, will start building a new relationship based on cooperation and transparency. In particular, Bush has convinced me that the U.S. missile defense system will never be deployed in Eastern Europe.

The Russian Federation has fulfilled all terms of the agreement. And even more. I shut down not only the Cuban Lourdes but also Kamran in Vietnam. I shut them down because I gave my word of honor. I, like a man, has kept my word. What have the Americans done? The Americans are not responsible for their own words. It is no secret that in recent years, the U.S. created a buffer zone around Russia, involving in this process not only the countries of Central Europe, but also the Baltic states, Ukraine and the Caucasus. The only response to this could be an asymmetric expansion of the Russian military presence abroad, particularly in Cuba. In Cuba, there are convenient bays for our reconnaissance and warships, a network of the so-called "jump airfields." With the full consent of the Cuban leadership, on May 11 of this year, our country has not only resumed work in the electronic center of Lourdes, but also placed the latest mobile strategic nuclear missiles "Oak" on the island. They did not want to do it the amicable way, now let them deal with this," Putin said.

15  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Static Discharge and Build Up of..Something...I don't Know on: July 22, 2012, 01:02:14 PM
I've had cases where dry air blowing over a wire dipole antenna caused a static charge to build up until it reaches a high enough voltage to arc across something. Suddenly the S-meter pegs and I hear a high frequency "whine" that gradually decreases in strength and then suddenly stops. The solution is to put a 100K resistor across the antenna to ground connection in order to discharge the static and prevent it from building up to a high enough voltage to arc.

The 100K value is large enough that it won't disipate much power (even a 1/2W resistor is okay) in a 50 Ohm antenna system - but it draws enough current to keep the static charge from building up.

If you are still using that vertical, just put the resistor between the base of the antenna and the ground connection.

Great advice. Add a gas discharge tube of some type and be done with it.
