1  eHam Forums / Elmers / problem with transmit on ncx-3 on: January 22, 2013, 01:58:18 PM
My first venture into National. the ncx-3 is totally new to me, Iam used to working on my Drake gear and collins. I checked the ncx power supply , all voltage feeds are on the money. Fire up the NCX-3 and receive is fine. go to tune position and nothing. No output of any kind. Also the s meter does not work in receive and no current sense shown on transmit. It seems the agc is not working, due to the high spikes in audio volume you get as you tune. The finals are good,  Of course the seller said he was getting 100 out with no problem. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on this. I was about to measure the voltages per the manual ,but thought I would ask first. Also subbed the relay, made no difference.the dual roll of the receive and transmit using the same circuits,is hard for me to get my head around.
thanks for any help.

sadly, I wasted about 10 cents with the two caps. since the 2 caps and one leg of the crystal were on the same solder pad, which had seen a bit of rework, in the past , prudence said , one pass of the iron would be better than 3. Old Yaesu boards were not the best ever made. How ever with all that being said, thanks for all the comments.

Installed the new 30mhz crystal from YAESU and changed out a couple of 10pf caps, the master oscillator is now dead on at 30mhz. as is the readout and any off sets.
thanks

REPLACED THE CRYSTAL on the master oscillator with the new one from yaesu and also the 2 padding caps on the adjustable cap. the oscillator is now stable on 30mhz, dial is right on to frequency and all is well.
steve ,nice dissertation on frequency counters, who cares, but shows your total lack of understanding or how to correct these problems. the piblished specs on the 30mhz oscillator ,was just that 30mhz. not + or -.
anyway problem fixed, with knowledge, not bullshit.

frequency off the same amount with either a HP counter or zero beating  or using a outside crystal calib. or the built in marker on the 980. I changed the crystal and also a 10pf cap that was across the adj trimmer and brought it closer to correct. I ordered a new crystal, much tighter specs , from Yaesu , will see what happens
thanks for the comments.

Steve
you seem like a knowing guy, with answers for everything, although none of them has anything to do with the original question. If you had just bought a new IC-7800 and it was out of calibration, would you give a dam? ,after spending 10,000. or just live with it. My question was how to bring the 980 back into calibration, its obvious you don"t have a clue on how to solve the problem just a pile of smart ass comments.
How about a comment on how to fix the problem?   I didn't think so.

the counter and the dial are off exactly the same amount also same amount using WWV.

the counter is a Hp and is dead on. This is the master oscillator on the 980. Ordered a crystal from Yaesu today, much tighter tolerances. will change out and also any of the old caps and components in the oscillator circuit. Why worry about the difference, I just like things to work as they should.

I have a ft-980 works just fine except the dial readout is off frequency. I put a frequency counter on the board test point an it read 29,999,643, not 30,000,000 as it should. This difference ,is just what the main dial readout is off. There is a adjustment cap on the vfo board to adjust and the 29,999,643 ,was the highest.  I could get, on the counter. I had a 30,000,000 crystal, I subbed for the original, the reading went up to 29,999,857. . I ordered the new crystal from yaesu, today. I don't know the info on the crystal I subbed, good or bad. I checked voltage feed to the vfo board per the Yaesu manual ,all seemed very close to spec.
Anyone have a idea about this, I think the heart of the problem is a bad crystal, would be grateful for any ideas about the problem.Maybe a part on the board? could stop the oscillator form getting to 30mhz? Have posted to all the Yaesu reflectors with no answers at all.
thanks

thanks for the ideas, maybe I will sit in a chair and stare at the car, hopefully will come up with a good idea or location. I think I will drop the top part way to see what might hit what when the auto top is operating. thanks to all for the suggestions.

13  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / need help on antenna install on: October 25, 2012, 06:09:18 PM
Have done many installs in a lot of cars, but my new car ,a chrysler sebring convertible is hard to figure out. The top is self storing and fully automatic, with a automatic boot cover. All the normal places that you would have normally put a antenna, either with a mount or even a mag mount  won't work here because of all the moving panels. Also a lot of plastic around that part of the car. Anyone maybe has found a solution for this type of car. I could do a MNO  install on the front fender top edge, but hate to touch the body panel and mess up the paint. The panel edges around the top  parts are very tight and close spaced a normal edge mount ,lip mount won't fit in place.   any one have any ideas?
thanks for reading

Iam beginning to think the outputs are gone. I don't know the history on the rig. But its very easy to fry the tubes if you deviate from swans tuneup. .
thanks
