76  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Radio Propagation plotting ---(TAP programs) on: April 02, 2002, 12:37:34 PM
hi.
I'm trying to plot the coverage area for a repeater. I've used several commercial versions of TAP programs but don't currently have access to them. I'm trying to use the 'Radio Mobile' software pack and I can get everything to work (loading elevation data and maps) but when I try to plot it, it gives me an error "9" VB runtime error.

this program isn't exactly the easiest to work with so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any other freeware software that does TAP plots.   I've got all the elevation data and maps for my area just need a program to run the plot.

thanks for any help or suggestions

I e-mailed the company. I said exactly what was on the disk (numbers and such) and they e-mailed me a new serial. (and a new file that it worked with)

79  eHam Forums / HomeBrew / 2 things... Lightning and GE Master II on: March 31, 2002, 10:42:25 PM
Problem is 99% of the info found on the net about mastr II equipment is people taking mobiles and converting them to repeaters. But I have one of the commercially sold repeaters. I've had several replies that are helping me start this project, though I'm still looking for any actual technical data or info. Most of what I've been given is just general advice, or moral support Smiley

AS for the lightning project, previously mentioned by somebody, I don't get QST, but thanks for the tip, I'll look it up, or try to find a copy of that QST.

One thing I would like to add.

this is a full repeater. it's a Forest Service Surplus radio. I have a lot of experience with it on the Gov band (this radio specificly was 172mhz).   but I want to step it down to the 2 meter ham band. so I need info on changing the capacitors and crystals etc...

I also have a unbilical cord link to UHF, have the UHF repeater too, but that's for another clear day.

ok I have two projects going on right now. First of all I have a GE Master 2 repeater that is in the 170mhz area and I need to re crystalize and tune it to a repeater split in the 2m ham band. any pointers or links to info would be great.

Now for my new project. I'm trying to build a lightning detector. I don't a hugely complex layout but I don't really like the one wire and a transistor model either. I'm looking for any info on this subject. schematics etc... so far I'm trying to piece different parts from several designs together to get the best overall design and alarm system. any info would be great

82  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / SKYWARN -decals etc... on: March 11, 2002, 06:39:24 PM
I've recently become an official member of my local SKYWARN assosiation...  I've been into spotting for a while so please don't reply with all the "spotting is dangerous" and it's not for beginners etc...

I've just relocated and am getting involved with a more formal system around here.  my questions are....

1) can you point me in the direction of a web location where I can find high resolution SKYWARN logos? -I need to print some stuff with that logo and I need to be able to print larger than the 2 or 3 inch logo most people have on their sites.

2) what's the best place to order SKYWARN magnetic decals for the side of your vehicle?

3) what is your opinion about useing a magnetic/suction cup   temporary flashing yellow light on your vehicle when involved in SKYWARN activities, especially when parked on the side of a road? -I've seen many different opinions, those that say absolutly and those that say absolutly not. are there any laws or recommendations from SKYWARN on this issue?

thanks

83  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / Panasonic 8band RF-2200 on: February 13, 2002, 08:20:04 PM
Hello Everyone

I have here a Panasonic 8 Band RF-2200 Shortwave radio with AM and FM

It is owned by the radio club I am in but I’m looking at buying it. I have a few questions though.

First and foremost is the radio worth it?

I’ve cleaned it up and it’s in great condition, it still even has the earphone wrapped in plastic in the compartment next to the batteries.

How much should I offer the club for it?  It survived several hamfests listed at $80.

I also have a couple questions about its use.   Does anyone know of a user’s manual online?
There are a couple features that I’m not familiar with. Just incase anyone knows I’ll list them at the bottom.  I would appreciate any info or suggestions about this radio anyone may have.

Thanks
Zeb

Features I’m not familiar with:

BFO
FM AFC
X-TAL 125khz  (I assume some type of filtering)
Marker Cal & SW spread dial
84  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / HT battery supply on: January 23, 2002, 07:50:17 PM
Last night I happend to be in my dorm room when the power went out. it was quite interesting. however it made me think a bit too.
I'm a goverment trained Incident Command Communications Tech and have worked in Telecommnications for the past 5 years.
my truck was not accesible (parked 20 minutes away (5 minute bus ride) it was totally dark.
I have an emergency kit in my truck with aided by my high power mobile in my truck, but I've got some extra HTs, and a solar charger and etc... but last night all I had was my HT and the battery was low on it, it was on the charger (wall charger) but duh, no power.
after 3 hours of chat with a friend (who had power and contacting some emergency authorities via ham) I started to see my power problem.

I want to build a battery power supply large enough to run a 1watt yeasu (6volts to the radio)for a good while. but I want it small enough to fit in a backpack to give power on the go.   (less than 15 pounds)

anyone have schematics for a recargeable or non rechargeable supply? anyone experimented with this before?   I know it's pretty simple and I'm a rocket scientist (well studying to be one) but I'd just like to know about other's experiences.

thanks
