1  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: FT-857 goes into TX ERROR on: May 07, 2010, 10:12:45 AM
No battery.  I spent 2 days looking through the schematics and the radio looking for a battery.

Hi Tim,

Does your FT-857 use some sort of small internal battery to retain memory settings while the power is off? Many radios do - and strange symptoms might mean that battery needs to be replaced. I was not able to find out if the FT-857 has that kind of battery doing a google search - it should be described in the manual you got with the radio.

I recently tried with only 1 frequency in memory.  It locked up within 15 minutes.

HI

My 857D only goes into TX ERROR when the tx freq is outside of the ham bands. Perhaps if the freq is near a band edge and the split is ON, that will give you the error message. If you look closer you will probably find the tx freq is the problem.

Good luck

I have an 857 in my truck and lately, it seems if I start loading frequencies into memory (either manually or via pc), it will work fine for a while then all of a sudden, the radio will indicate a signal on any memory location, but if I press the mic to initiate communication, the radio will display TX ERROR and will not transmit, nor will there be any audio.  I have found, that the only way to clear this is to do a full reset on the radio.
If I operate the radio in the VFO's, it appears to be fine.  I am totally stumped on this and have not been able to find any information about it.  Any ideas would be welcomed.

Thanks

I would like to know how to clean the faceplate keys on an FT857.
