1  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Left Handed Keys on: Yesterday at 03:34:24 PM
I have just started learning CW. I was wondering if any companies make single lever left handed equipment, or if the equipment is such that it can be changed over?

Just reverse the dit and dah wires...or maybe I am not understanding the problem.
2  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: RST confusion..inexperienced needs Elmer... on: May 15, 2013, 08:51:11 AM
Way back it was mostly a matter of ripple on the DC plate voltage due to insufficient filtering in the power supply. For many years transmitters have been pretty clean in terms of hum and modulation on the CW signals. We may see a comeback with the use of sound cards to generate CW.  Shocked

In the early 60's I remember a local DXer that had a switch to disconnect some of his filter caps to give his signal an unique sound for pileups.  Unique it was....raw!!

Surely you're not calling 1960 "Old School" are you?

Gosh, I hope not!  That was the first ARRL Handbook I ever owned and I still have it on my shelf!  I had been a ham for 2 years when that book was published.  The contents is certainly NOT old school. Smiley

Old Timer - I guess.....
4  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 10 gauge wire dipoles on: April 02, 2013, 08:11:19 AM
............Nr 10 wire has a more bass tone to it, an a Nr 16 is brighter sounding to me.

If we are talking about strings on a jazz guitar, I agree.  If not, rubbish......

Sorry for being blunt, but April 1 was yesterday!
5  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Buried Vertical Radials on: March 26, 2013, 10:28:02 AM
If you aerate your lawn as I do, it is best to bury the radials so they are not destroyed by the process.

Thanks, I had not heard about anyone on Wake.

Is KH9wf a Slim?
8  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Help with QSK-5 on: February 20, 2013, 09:34:32 AM
Just a thought:

Does it work OK into a dummy load? If yes, it could be common mode/RFI problem.
9  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: buried ground radial length? on: February 15, 2013, 10:33:12 AM
Just to add a little more confusion....

From the November/December, 2012 QEX, Tall Vertical Arrays by Al Christman, K3LC.

It was noted that both radial length and monopole height effect take-off angle and gain.

1/4 radials (60) and 1/4 monopole = 24.9 take-off and .39 gain
5/8 radials (60) and 1/4 monopole = 26.3 take-off and 1.0 gain
1/4 radials (60) and 5/8 monopole = 15.2 take-off and .73 gain
5/8 radials (60) and 5/8 monopole = 16.5 take-off and 1.0 gain

This was an EZNEC analysis and there is much more info regarding phased arrays, 4-square, etc.

Interesting....

I got all my contacts confirmed via LOTW in September.
11  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Cuba on: January 21, 2013, 10:18:06 AM
As I recall, there is a US citizen in a Cuban jail for distributing telecom equipment to Cubans.  I would not under any circumstances take com gear to Cuba

If my memory is failing me, please correct my statements.....
12  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: "Pulse Rated Tubes" and AL-80B advertized output... on: January 18, 2013, 07:26:30 AM
http://www.radiomuseum.org/tubes/tube_701a.html

Note the pulsed plate current/voltage and the average dissipation.  I built a CW amp with one of these 701A's around 1959.  Had to wind the filament transformer and fabricate a tube socket using plate caps.  Easily ran KW input.  Loved to watch the 872 mercury vapor rectifiers flash as I keyed the transmitter! The good old days when plate transformers weighed 100+ lbs.
13  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Adding Section To Universal Tower on: January 11, 2013, 12:20:35 PM
Would it be possible to put a 'same size' section above the base section?
14  eHam Forums / Stolen Gear / RE: Why steal a dipole ? on: January 05, 2013, 11:22:18 AM
electric fences makes for good neighbors.

Pole pigs work even better.......
15  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: CW from Iran... on: December 31, 2012, 09:13:10 AM
Gene, you might consider expanding your horizon.  EP3SMH was on this am using RTTY and he states on his QRZ page he uses LOTW.  Smiley
Randy

I know..... I dont think it would be a big deal.  The ProIII will do it, and the computer sits right there by the rig. Just a matter of hooking up and doing it.  I am just stubborn, I guess. I even use the damned mic once in a while, but do NOT like it. Cool

Maybe the Intrepid guys will go to Iran on their next expedition. hi hi

73, Gene AF3Y

Gene,
You can program your call in one memory and the exchange in another memory of the PRO3.  I have done this in the past to catch a new one on RTTY since I usually only work CW.
