High phased beams make the strong guys even stronger/louder.  Seems to me this would make matters worse for a crappy radio, not better.

Used/older contest grade gear had be purchased for VERY reasonable prices - a better investment than a "new" crappy radio...

A friend had a Kenwood TS-440, and he *loved* it - had a front end like a barn door, and it made AM SW stations sound fantastic!  When used on a ham band, someone 10 Khz away was "splattering", wiping out whoever he was trying to work...  See what I mean about crappy gear?  Try and use THAT radio in a contest.  You will be lucky to last five minutes.
