I have an old computer that worked fine with XP, but I don't want to put 7 on it.  Unfortunately, the hard drive died, and I lost a lot of data including my last copy of XP.

I don't really have the time to try to learn Linux, so I would like to stick to XP.  Is there a legal way to get another copy?

Who made the machine?  Did they provide an OEM backup/restore copy of XP?

Most (but not all) of the OEM CD's/DVD's come with a "pre-installed" Win XP key.  For those that don't, of course, you have the Win XP sticker with the license key somewhere on the machine, or you should.

However, for that key to work properly, you usually need the "right" version of XP.  In other words, the XP key on a Dell machine may not work when using an HP or Compaq XP (re)install disk.

Where can you find the disks?  The OEM may still make them available... for a fee, and they may not be cheap.  eBay.  Hamfests.  Computer swapfests.  Check with a local computer hardware retailer -- a big box store may not be able to help, but a local 'mom & pop' store might.  Check with some consultants as well.  Many have "spare" disks in one or more of their bags of tricks, since you never know...

Never seen it happen with Windows installation disks. It can be a problem though if you use a system restore disk that is a image and not a fresh install because device drivers can be wrong.

Thank you for the tips.  I believe I have found a copy.

Late to reply, but when you get back up, make an image of the HD for a backup.
