There is now an app called "WiFi Talkie" that allows direct communication between smart phones without the need of any wifi or cellular connection.  Kids are using it to stay in touch with each other in areas where there is no wifi, and it could (hopefully) stimulate an interest in radio, just as those old walkie talkies did for some kids in the '60s and '70s!  Smiley

It's impossible to prove that something is impossible so maybe that really works, no?

Have you tried it?  It has close to 4,000 downloads so far.

I have not loaded it but from reading the description, it does need Wi-Fi but not Internet or Cellular.  So I assume it sets the phone up as an ad-hoc network.  Range would be rather limited then too.

"WiFi Talkie"...

Hence, it uses WiFi.  Just a wild guess. Smiley

Mesh network, similar to the "Serval Mesh".  Can also work in disaster areas when the wifi and cell towers are down.
